Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin. Author Adam Gopnik is back again with another title that we can all make good use of. All That Happiness Is …Some Words on What Matters. And what The New Yorker staff writer examines here…are our accomplishments versus our achievements… “I give the simple example of when I was 12 years old I sat on the bed in my bedroom in Montreal struggling with a 40 dollar folk guitar to learn the chords of Beatles songs. I had to do it myself, stretch and bend my fingers painfully around the fretboard and on the steel string. That week, those weeks, those years of learning guitar are the foundation really for everything I’ve done since.” There’s a big difference between accomplishment and achievement…when it comes to happiness. Gopnik’s All That Happiness is a short title arriving this month…with some lasting lessons. You can find us at Techstination.com. Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin. Part five. Okay…so who really needs driverless mobility? Clearly…it promises to be an affordable, safe option for people who can’t drive themselves for a variety of reasons..and can be life changing. At Princeton University, Professor Alain Kornhauser has worked with teams of students creating a digital tool to show communities nationwide how it can work for them. It will be shown at the upcoming Smart Driving Cars Summit. And Kornhauser says just maybe…it can evenbwork even for those of us who own cars.. “All of a sudden, some people who are buying cars are going to say Whoops…do I need eight? Do I need three? No I only… and that’s all positive.” Kornhauser is the co-author of the new book, The Real Case for Driverless Mobility. Find more at www.SmartDrivingCar.com. You can find us at Techstination.com. Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin. Part 4. In the city of San Francisco, robotaxis have been met with protests and some political opposition. But what if driverless mobility services were focused on a different market. That’s the vision of the new book, The Real Case for Driverless Mobility by Princeton’s Alain Kornhauser and co-author Michael Sena, who says, whether for the old or young or anyone who can’t drive for whatever reason.. “It’s providing rides to people but doing it in a more effective, efficient and flexible way than buses have been able to do. It’s like taxis, but taxis are too expensive for the one reason…they have to be able to pay the driver.” Sena and Kornhauser contend this isn’t for New York City…where public transit really works. But it is feasible in many if not most other communities. More on that in our next report. You can find us at Techstination.com. Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin. With all of the billions of dollars that have been invested by companies like Alphabet with Waymo and GM with Cruise and others…in successfully developing the technology to offer robotaxis…what now? Are they just going to give us an alternative to driving ourselves …or taking an Uber or Lyft to the airport? In the new book, The Real Case for Driverless Mobility, Princeton’s Alain Kornhauser and co-author Michael Sena argue that the focus should be on creating driverless mobility services for people who really need rides, that can be affordable without having to pay a driver… “And provide a service so that we don’t go bankrupt. We don’t beg from the public sector." Kornhauser says a private driverless mobility company can make money providing rides for as little as three dollars. More in our next report. Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin. This is part two of a five part series on the future of driverless mobility. Thousands of people today are getting from here to there using the latest supervised FSD from Tesla, or have vehicles that allow them drive hands free on specific roads. But there is a long way to go before we’ll own cars that truly drive themselves. One hurdle…and a big one….is who would be legally responsible in the event of an accident? But in the new book, The Real Case for Driverless Mobility, Princeton Professor Alain Kornhauser says what if the focus was on providing rides to those who need them…. “We can begin to deliver the value associated with giving high quality rides to people at a very affordable level, so that they can improve their quality of life.” The economics? Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin. This is the first in a series of reports on driverless mobility. With the work that companies like Waymo and Cruise have done in places like Arizona and San Francisco, Princeton Professor Alain Kornhauser, faculty chair of autonomous vehicle engineering, argues that the capability of robotaxis to operate without human drivers has been proven. But in a new book, The Real Case for Driverless Mobility, Kornhauser and co-author Michael Sena say the real market opportunity for this new form of transportation has so far been missed….although Kornhauser points out Waymo deserves much credit.. “They are doing. They are doing…that is a whole heck of a lot different than to dos. So hats off to them." So what is The Real Case for Driverless Mobility? We’ll have more in our next report.
