Description

Are you and what you do going unnoticed, unrecognized or misunderstood? Is it because you just can't find the ways and means to share what is special about you and your organization in this increasingly complex mixed media landscape? Then this show is for you because I explore how to get noticed, to be recognized and to be understood by those people and organizations who matter to you.I've run the EASTWEST Public Relations Group since 1995 and I've also set up multiple companies spending my own money on PR so I've been on both sides. This show is for my fellow business owners and leaders who take risks instead of paycheques, and believe that if other people knew what they had to offer, they would reach out and get in touch.

Registration of a UK private limited company creates a flurry of thoughts about PR, an experience of the CountingUP challenger bank, and an unexpected opportunity with HSBC.HSBC, like all banks I imagine, has a backlog due to the Bounceback loan, 110,000 applications in a matter of weeks. My experience of getting a bounceback loan from HSBC was brilliant - quick & efficient. I was impressed. As I went to register a new company bank account I received a letter from challenger Bank + App Counting Up. This prompted me to think about what makes customers switch providers and what role PR can play.Listen to what Hermann Simon, considered by many to be the father of modern pricing theory and author of ‘Confessions of a pricing man’ says about value and secondary value. In his words lie the PR challenges that companies of all sizes face, and also the answers to how you can market goods with higher prices and have your customers loving you for it.Listen to this and our other episodes to get a high-level view and practical level tools for getting noticed for free. Please visit our blog post on PR for business please visit our site:https://www.eastwestpr.com/blogs/I also talk about SPEAK|pr - our 5 Step Methodology for entrepreneurs to manage their own PR. Peers Have Influence Over Consumers, Celebrities Don't. This according to research by Collective Bias. On the day that Trump has his account fact checked, I look at why President Trump uses Twitter as his chosen channel to influence his followers, and more importantly should an entrepreneur follow his lead?I dive into the stats behind Twitter, its value for trends, time sensitive information and customer engagement. Credit to Sprout Social for informative post:Too summarise - The Twitter algorithm is constantly evolving. The Twitter timeline is a mix of algorithmic content and real-time content. You can turn off the Twitter algorithm in your own feed display, if you want.Twitter’s curation means that content quality and connecting with your followers are still essential ways to help your posts get reach and visibility. We also discuss Admiral James Stockdale, and what Jim Collins coined as the StockDale Paradox, and what guidance that gives to entrepreneurs about their messaging during this time. It's not about being optimistic, but having faith and being realistic about the challenges at hand. Admiral Jim Stockdale said, “This is what I learned from those years [1968-74] in the [Hanoi] prison camp, where all those constraints just were oppressive. You must never ever ever confuse, on the one hand, the need for absolute, unwavering faith that you can prevail despite those constraints with, on the other hand, the need for the discipline to begin by confronting the brutal facts, whatever they are. We’re not getting out of here by Christmas.”If a person wants to write their own version of events, then Twitter enables them to circumvent the traditional filters and restrains of editorial media. As Trump has found this makes Twitter a supremely powerful platform but also one to be managed with due care and attention. For a blog post which accompanies this podcast please visit:https://www.eastwestpr.com/blogs/You can reach Jim James on Linkedin:I also talk about SPEAK|pr - our 5 Step Methodology for entrepreneurs to manage their own PR. Hélio Vogas, Brazilian motivational speaker shared insights into the need to find ways to motivate staff as they come out of furlough, and shared the story of the #Reachfortherazor campaign led by the CEO Jason Killens and the Director of Operations Lee Brooks. What can you do spark a movement which is personal, on message, and importantly more symbolic than difficult to do, but which sends a message to staff, partners and customers?Although I didn't like the content of a China focused publication I received through my letterbox today, it did lead me to discuss the merits of printing ones' own newsletter as a solution to the lack of print which is available for long form information and photographs. In the old days of PR, print was an essential part of the marketing mix; perhaps it is time to bring it back especially for certain customer groups who don't live on the internet.I share here how my agency, EASTWEST, recently secured over 90 pieces of coverage for our client Rosti for it's 72 hour 3d printing service by framing the news release within our COVID mindset of Compassionate, Optimistic, Values Based, Informative and Digital. Finally - 'some good news' - a YouTube only show by celebrity in lockdown John Krazinski has been sold after only 2 months.  There is another site running since 1997 called the "Good News Network®"  as an antidote to the barrage of negativity experienced in the mainstream media. Because of its long history, staying power, and public trust, GNN is #1 on Google for good news. However, in spite of their own PR it seems that it 'Some Good News' was more attractive to ViacomCBS; because Krasinski is already an actor on their shows. Sometimes it's not just about the PR but the connections.Next show I'll talk about Russell Brunson and his strategy for getting into the top 100 influencers that you need for your business. What does the financial chaos surrounding Hertz, McLaren and JLR tell us about the need to focus on growth areas of the economy, as bike sales surge 23% and Halfords shares add 80% in a week?Dominic Cummings has a PR nightmare; it's one thing to break the rules but another to be seen doing so. Did he forget that he is famous, that a 70 year old member of the public can look up car plates online, and that social media means Durham is no further away than down the road. More importantly, the response on social media and mainstream media demonstrates why 'who we are' matters when it comes to leadership. How can you show leadership to your team, partners and customers during lock down?Do you want to share your website and lots of other information with people who can't or won't read it? How about using AI enabled readers like http://talkify.netTalkify reads the content of any website and we automatically detect any of the supported languages for you. Our idea is simple - Enter a url to a website and we will read it aloud for you, you can of course download the audio as mp3 to listen to at a later time. Today, the foundrs have a big variety of users ranging from study material used by Universities, bloggers that proof reads their blogs, students and more. Could this increase engagement on your site/app/materials/guidebooks/manuals?Getting your company noticed with just 18 minutes per day of PR activity. That's my focus now for the SPEAK|pr program. I've built the tools and was thinking about how I can make it useful when entrepreneurs, including me, have so little time. The answer is automation. I share on this podcast my statistics after one week of using the ZOHO Social platform to centralise and manage our social media posts to Linkedin, Facebook and Twitter. (Instagram to come later once I've solve the workflow).I won't bore you with the stats here but the numbers are in the >100's % increase in engagement. It's off a low base for sure, but we have to start somewhere. Where are you starting from, and how can my team and I support you and your organization to get noticed? Public relations is about more than press relations; I have to say that I hate it when people think that PR is about having articles published. 'The profession or practice of creating and maintaining goodwill of an organization's various publics (customers, employees, investors, suppliers, etc.), usually through publicity and other nonpaid forms of communication. These efforts may also include support of arts, charitable causes, education, sporting events, and other civic engagements.'Business Dictionary.comI chat today about what I am learning from the Girls Day School Trust in the UK about pivoting, communication and being aligned to their "so that.""So that" was shared by Paul Dunn who is the Chairman of the B1G1 (Buy1GIVE1) is a global giving business movement that helps businesses give back easily in meaningful ways. Since 2007, B1G1 has worked with more than 2,000 businesses from all industries around the world, creating over 130 million giving impacts. As I walked downtown in Bath today I surveyed the banks and shops, then took a look at their websites when I got home. Listen to my review of their high street and net street personalities and what it says about their "so that" motives. As we keep saying, those with a COVID strategy will survive. See my slideshare on the need for pr to be Compassionate, Optimistic, Values Based, Informative and Digital. With over 2m visually impaired in the UK and  285 million people visually impaired worldwide (about the same as the population of the USA), how is your company showing it cares for employees and customers who are vulnerable at this time? Doing so now will build lasting loyalty. For a blog post which accompanies this please visit:https://www.eastwestpr.com/blogs/You can reach Jim James on Linkedin:I also talk about SPEAK|pr - our 5 Step Methodology for entrepreneurs to manage their own PR. How a dispute over a farmer's bonfire sparked a train of thought about mistrust, and how the Edelman Trust Barometer report backs up the impression that people aren't in favour of anyone that's in authority. That means entrepreneurs and business too! We've all got a bad reputation before we've started communicating. If we made money during COVID we're mercenary, if we lost money during COVID we are bad at business and possibly out of business. So how can entrepreneurs use PR to build their reputation and put the fires out as they rebuild loyalty and trust. I discuss the news that Haymarket will close it's finance publications in Asia, and what that means for everyone who relies on traditional print as a means of getting PR.I'll also share about ZOHO Social, the content scheduling toolset that we started using today which looks set to save us lots of time and will help us to reach our communities across 5 platforms. Steve Judge, 2 x World Paralympian Champion inspired me this morning with his talk on ActionCoach about taking one step at a time. I've been guilty of setting standards so high for myself that I wasn't putting one foot forward. Today this changes. As an entrepreneur for over 25 years across the world, I want to share what I know works to get a company noticed which is free, or nearly free.  As we see that traditional print publications are going all digital, or going out of business, the opportunities for entrepreneurs have been been greater to leverage technology for profitable business.I mention toolsets which you can download for free from my website. Tax Tips from Simon Robinson, ATT (Fellow) FMAAT. 11.7 million returns due. 94% were filed online. Just over 700k filed on the 31st.  26.5K filed in the last hour. Last year, last filing was with 17 seconds to go! However just short of 1 million missed the deadline.Late filing penalties£100 late filing penalty. If still unfiled after three months (30 April 2020) then £10 per day up to £900. If still unfiled after 6 months, 5% of tax due or £300 if greater. Same again at 12 months. Latter penalties capped at 100% of tax due.Late payment penaltiesInterest accrues from day one (3.25%). If unpaid at 30 days, 5% of tax due. At six months, 5% of any tax outstanding. Ditto 12 months.Example: File and pay on 1 February 2021 (1 year and a day late). Liability £10,000. Interest and penalties would total £3,825.How to avoid thisSpeak to an adviser/accountant! Keep good records as you go, it is easier and aids budgeting. Aim to file as early as possible, no adverse effect on payment/amendment dates and gives more notice of any liability. If you are late, don’t panic. Aim to complete asap to limit penalties. Also consider making an estimated tax payment to limit interest and penalties in respect of late payment. You can appeal penalties if you have a reasonable excuse, but the acceptable list is limited (bereavement, hospital stay, HMRC technical issues).Common business expenses to make sure you claimUse of home as office - £4 per week with no evidence, more if properly calculatedMileage for business miles – 45 per mile for the first 10,000 miles, 25 thereafter. Andy Clayton and I met in Beijing in 2008, as he was a fellow British entrepreneur, and so he was one of the first people I called when I wanted to learn how other returning expatriates have managed the transition. Fast forward from our first meeting and now Andy is a successful and articulate Gazelles and Petra certified coach with the European rights to the training methodologies of the American firm providing the tools of Scaling Up.Andy sees the world differently to most people. Mark Goh, Founder,VanillaLaw™ | Barrister (UK) I Advocate & Solicitor (Singapore) | Accredited Mediator(SIMI) | Negotiator(Oxford) and retired Army Captain in the Singapore Reserves. In 1992 Mark set his own law firm upon returning from the UK to Singapore after studying law at the University of Buckingham.  LAW FIRM GOING DIGITAL With the advent of the digital age, he began exploring ways to digitise Vanillalaw, observing that going digital could save the law firm's operational costs in a tremendous manner. Already experienced living overseas, he could also see the potential of the law firm expanding beyond the shores of the island nation of Singapore. So in 2011, he started transforming the law firm to go digital. DEVELOPMENT OF VANILLALAW DOCS By 2014, Mark had already been in practice for almost 20 years as an experienced dispute resolution lawyer. He was disheartened to observe that many (SME) business owners were often embroiled in disputes simply because they had no or poorly drafted contracts. The very thought of paying huge legal fees to consult a lawyer was (and still is) a big turn off. Vanillalaw Docs was developed with the intent of mitigating the huge legal fees. Its an ecosystem developed by lawyers for the business owner to hands on preparing the first draft. The lawyers come in afterwards with the vetting process and advice. Today, Vanillalaw Docs has more than 850 subscribers and counting. Mark has funded this himself, and recently launched GoSME.org Indranee Rajah S.C., Senior Minister Of State For Law (16 May 2017) of Singapore said,  "Tech for more productive interaction with clients: A good example is VanillaLaw™ Docs, an interactive web-based platform created by Singapore law firm, VanillaLaw™ LLC. VanillaLaw™ LLC developed their own online contract template which, when used together with this platform, allows their clients to insert relevant information to prepare the first draft of legal documents. The law firm reviews this and focuses on issues requiring legal advice and drafting amendments. The end product is still cleared by qualified lawyers but this technology enabled process cuts down the need for multiple or long meetings to take instructions. This saves time and costs for firm and clients. Vanilla Law Docs Mark then started a community called 'Go-SME  to encourage Singapore SME's to take advantage of the opportunity in the wider world by using technology to distribute work processes and to find new clients. The community now has over 1,000 members in the network across Singapore, Japan and Australia.  http://gosme.biz You can find Mark Goh on Linkedin Thank you for listening to Silver Fox Entrepreneurs podcast. LawBite was founded in 2011 by Clive Rich, barrister, mediator, arbitrator and professional negotiator. Clive recognised a need for SMEs to have greater access to affordable, understandable legal services. LawBite’s recent You Gov research indicated that the UK’s SMEs collectively lose over £13 billion a year as a result of failing to take care of their legal business properly. These failures range from not taking care of trading contracts, intellectual property, terms and conditions and shareholder contracts, through to regulatory issues, staffing problems, and disputes. Clive talks with Jim James about raising money through crowd cube, balancing working life with a growing family, and how he is managing to install a professional management team in order to spend more time on the vision of the company. Grew up in Greater Boston and my Boston accent and I went to study at USC in L.A. and Cambridge University in the UK. After graduation I was a wild-eyed backpacker working my way around the world as a bartender in the Virgin Islands, a concierge/ski bum in the Swiss Alps, an English teacher in post-revolution Prague, a house-painter in Norway, a grape picker in France and a BMW factory worker in Munich. In '93 I traveled overland from Switzerland to Hong Kong via Beijing on the Trans-Siberian and fell in love with China. Got an MBA at the Rotterdam School of Management in The Netherlands '94-'96 & fell in love with the web. After grad school did a solo 4,000km bicycle trip through Africa from Nairobi to Cape Town vimeo.com/22348199 Labors of love to exercise/exorcise my creative muse: - Write children's books with all proceeds going to charity; - Produce / MC stand-up comedy shows across Asia with top comedians like Jim Gaffigan.
