Falling on train tracks and shattering your leg can be a life-changing experience.  For Bhavisha Patel it was transformative one. Raised in Kenya and educated in England, Bhavisha was a litigation attorney practicing in New York. After the accident she underwent multiple surgeries over several years. During her recovery she returned to painting. And it was painting she says that made her whole in moments of despair.Bhavisha began painting with minimal formal training, but through books and experimenting she developed her own unique style. Now over fifty she has been painting for the last twenty years. "Art," she says, "is a vehicle to find internal strength." This lawyer turned artist lives in Philadelphia and her work has been exhibited locally and in galleries throughout the world.In today's episode Nadine O. sits down with painter Bhavisha Patel to talk about how she continues to find meaning and create art in later life. Karen L. Smith often says "timing is everything and that, all dreams are possible."So, it's no surprise, she realized her dream and became a full-time professional musician.Her instrument is the drum and you may hear her making beats on Philly sidewalksor performing on the concert stage, across the US. But there’s more to Karen than meets the eye. Karen uses her instrument as a healing and transformative medium, creating drums circles at schools, senior centers and community outreach functions. Brightening eyes and souls of many. She organized and is the artistic director and lead percussionist for two jazz ensembles -- Sistahs Laying Down Hands and Weez the Peebles. She coordinated the first John Coltrane Jazz Festival. She has written several plays including Legacy the Play and Legacy II, Where are the Tubmans? And the list goes on. Nadine O, caught up with Karen L. Smith, right before her busy season, to talk about her passion for music and what she asked the universe to deliver to her. Nadine O. is a TV news editor by day and an inspirational speaker, vlogger, podcaster by night. After turning 50, she began to reflect on her life's purpose. Many around her spoke of doing things like traveling, picking up old hobbies or learning new one's after retirement. Sadly, a few didn't make it to that milestone. Then there were those in retirement who struggled to fill the hours in their days. She began to wonder, was that it? No!So, she created her very first company, the Yandy Project. Y.A.N.D.Y. standing for 'You Are Not Done Yet', and made it her mission to inspire, to support and to share stories of hope, exploration and new beginnings, for and by, people over 50. Her first mini-series, appropriately named, You Are Not Done Yet!, followed the daily lives of several seniors in retirement or approaching retirement. Since then, 3 of her guests passed away. This challenged her even more, to inspire others not to wait, to keep learning new things, to see the world, and to re-discover their passions.Nadine O. is presently dusting off the cobwebs on her first mini-series and getting fired up about the new, Over 50? In his last book, Tom discussesthe meaningful life lessons he learned in his first 98 years.Tom continued to write a monthly newsletter sharing his poetry and observations with family andfriends after he passed the century mark.
