Description

Good questions. Great guests. Few beers... Steve and Seamus like asking good questions. And they love good answers. After over 20 years of friendship, they bought a microphone and started a podcast, allowing them to sit with, and learn from, the most interesting people they can access.

From Kiwi legend Marc Ellis, to media personalities Jeremy Wells and Paddy Gower, Rugby coach extraordinaire Wayne Smith, sexologist Morgan Penn, and Olympian Dame Lisa Carrington...  Between Two Beers has produced countless hours of incredible stories, career highs, lows and moments of raw vulnerability. And it’s only the beginning.

On this episode of Between Two Beers we talk to Mark Stafford. This ep is really special. There's just so much goodness in here. Staffy is a radio host, who is best known as the former face of the TAB, where he spent two decades as a bookmaker and broadcaster. But what's not so well-known is his roller-coaster ride through life with all its twists and turns. In this episode we talk about how he died in a car accident, before being brought back to life, beating cancer, getting diagnosed with MS and found his way to the TAB. He shares his best match-fixing stories, we talk about the legend of Steel Balls and all the most incredible yarns from being NZ's premier oddsmaker. We also talk about the devastating year of 2020, where he lost his job, his sister and his best friend in a short period of time. How he built himself back up, the friendships and lessons he leaned on and his reflections towards the end of this one - make it one of the greats. Staffy is such a lovely bloke, who's been through it all. He was incredibly candid and raw in this chat, and when you mix that up with being one of the best storytellers in NZ, made it one of our favs. We're also super stoked to have Staffy on the books of B2B Speakers, so if you’d like him to MC your night, or share his story at your function or event, flick us a message by going to www.b2bspeakers.co.nz. On this episode of Between Two Beers we talk to Lauren Rae. I don't say this lightly, but this is one of the most powerful eps we've done. Lauren is one of our Low Key Legends, who's currently in the fight of her life against melanoma. After going to the Commonwealth Games as a weightlifter, Lauren was given a terminal cancer diagnosis for a rare non-sun related melanoma which contained a gene called BRAF v600e. Despite having the melanoma surgically removed Lauren was told the cancer cells had spread to her lymph nodes, and that should she decide to join the clinical trial at Auckland Hospital, the doctors didn't think it would be of any use. Staring mortality in the face, Lauren questioned her diagnosis. She chose to fight, seeking second and third opinions that eventually opened the door to hope and led her family to going all in on Australia. Within a week of speaking to her Brisbane Oncologist, Lauren's family sold their car, took leave without pay and told their three and five year old, they were off on holiday. The powerful part is what happened next, Lauren's outlook and approach to life, the wisdom she's accrued and the spirit she's bringing to this fight. This is an ep you won't forget. Lauren is an exceptional storyteller and her journey is a real perspective shifter. Seamus spends a day on David Galbraith's mindset course, Steve shares all the details of where they're investing in the podcast, the boys review recent episodes with Jesse Mulligan and Megan Compain, and preview an upcoming Low Key Legend.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Megan Compain is the newly appointed All Blacks commercial manager, whose back story is as impressive as her new role. She was the first Kiwi to play professional basketball in the USA and the only one to play in the WNBA, had three pro seasons in Europe, and represented New Zealand for 10 years and at two Olympic Games.  She also has an extensive 20-year career in the sports industry, including a long history with New Zealand Rugby - and is the partner and director of her own creative agency in Wellington. In this episode we talk about leaving Whanganui for the US as a 16-year-old, life as a professional basketballer, Partying with Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash and Mark Cuban, managing NZ Rugby’s commercial obligations, her parenting journey and relationship with Razor. Megan also addresses the enduring impact of the abuse of trust and grooming she suffered as a teenager at High School the US. It’s the first time Megan has opened up publicly on some of the most difficult parts of her journey, and we’re so grateful she shared her story – to help others who may be in a similar situation.  This was such a cool chat, which effortlessly bounced from heartfelt to hilarious. Megan’s energy and outlook on life are contagious; we really loved this one. We're also super stoked to have Megan on the books of B2B Speakers, so if you’d like him to MC your night, or share his story at your function or event, flick us a message by going to B2Bspeakers.co.nz. Jesse Mulligan is one of New Zealand’s best, and highest profile broadcasters – and a man that can do it all. He’s been a standup comic, TV producer, writer, PR man, food reviewer, radio announcer and he’s even a trained lawyer. But he’s best known for reaching huge audiences both on his afternoon show at Radio NZ, and his stints at Seven Sharp and the Project, where he fronted the show for seven years before it shut down in 2023. This interview was recorded two weeks before the shocking announcement that Newshub is set to close – and while we discussed the future of TV and the jobs in it, no one had any idea what was to come. Jesse was incredible company and such a thoughtful, interesting guest. We talked about his most interesting interviews, Matt and Jerry, his path through comedy and TV, the axing of the Project, what he’ll do next and much, much more. This was a really fun one, hope you enjoy. We're also super stoked to have Jesse on the books of B2B Speakers, so if you’d like him to MC your night, or share his story at your function or event, flick us a message by going to B2Bspeakers.co.nz. Steve and Seamus discuss their new weekly business meetings and how they're working on their relationship, they reflect on recent episodes with the girls from Sex.Life and Zion Armstrong and reveal who the next guest is.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Strap in, because this one’s an epic.  Zion Armstrong's story starts in West Auckland and involves running away from the police so fast that he started an athletics career that took him to the Commonwealth Games. At the same time, he was selling sport shoes – and at the age of 24 was head of footwear at adidas NZ.  From that toehold he climbed the corporate ladder before becoming president for Adidas North America where he oversaw 12,500 staff, inked deals with some of the world's biggest sports and music stars and took annual profit to a record $US6 billion after a couple of years.  Here Armstrong can name-drop some ultra-impressive dealings, playing a link role in facilitating Inter Miami's signing of Lionel Messi, securing Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes on an Adidas promotional contract, and working on projects with Grammy award-winning rapper Pharrell Williams.  And then finally, in 2022, Armstrong walked away from this rock-and-roll lifestyle and returned to New Zealand in pursuit of being a better dad in the wake of his divorce, not wanting his children to experience the same disconnect he had often endured as a kid.  We cover all the detail in this one – and it’s one heck of a ride. Zion’s inspirational story shows what’s possible with the right mindset and work ethic – and his decision to walk away shows what's really important in life. You’ll love this one.  We're also super stoked to have Zion on the books of B2B Speakers, so if you’d like him to share his story, or one of our other epic guests, at your function or event, flick us a message by going to B2Bspeakers.co.nz. On this episode of Between Two Beers we welcome back Morgan Penn and Hayley Sproull from the podcast Sex.Life.  A lot has happened since we last had them on the show – including Sex.Life becoming NZ’s top new podcast of 2023.  In this episode we trace back over all the most interesting stories and themes from Season 1 – and take a glimpse at Season 2, we discuss the relationship between the duo – and how it’s evolved, we talk home play, Jason Momoa, what their DMs look like and how our listeners responded to our first episode with Morgan. And in the second half they help answer all our sex questions from both us and our guests.  This was a really fun ep – filled with a ton of super valuable sex advice and laughs. It’s the foursome you never knew you needed.  But it does include descriptions of sexual acts and desires, and is not suitable for listeners under the age of 18. Please take care of yourself, and ask for help if you need it.  Listen on iheart or wherever you get your podcasts from, or watch the video on Youtube.   If you’d like to hire one of our guests to speak at your function or event, flick us a message by going to B2Bspeakers.co.nz.   This episode was brought to you from the Export Beer garden studio. On this episode of Between Two Beers we’re rewinding the clock back two years to when we sat down with Grant Fox.  Grant is one of the best to have ever worn the All Blacks 10 jersey and is still regarded as one of the finest goal-kickers of all time.  At the time of recording, Grant was in his final weeks as an All Blacks selector and in the process of pulling down the curtain on a 40-year career with New Zealand Rugby.  We covered all the most insightful parts of his rugby career, his business, his relationship with Ryan and some of his best stories from travelling with his golf superstar son.  He also talks about his 40-year friendship with the late Sir Martin Crowe and his important work with Big Buddies and the importance of being present with your kids.  This was one of our favourite episodes and we’re really excited to share it with our new listeners. Grant broke the stereotype of stoic rugby man, with passages of real vulnerability and openness. If you didn’t catch it the first time around you’re in for a treat.  Listen on iheart or wherever you get your podcasts from, or watch the video on Youtube.   If you’d like to hire one of our guests to speak at your function or event, flick us a message by going to B2Bspeakers.co.nz. Dave Letele is perhaps best known as a former professional boxer 'Brown Buttabean’, but his story is so much larger than that.   It's been filled with highs and lows, from early sporting success to the failure of his supermarket business in Australia where he lost everything, including his family, and returned to New Zealand with only the clothes on his back, weighing in at over 200 kgs.  He turned to prize fighting to earn money and get fit, lost over 100kgs and shared his journey on social media. The public response to his efforts built up the movement that became Buttabean Motivation or BBM.  For the last decade, he’s worked tirelessly to create opportunities for people. He has set up free gyms in West and South Auckland, and Tokoroa, a community kitchen, a social supermarket in Tokoroa, and a Foodshare which regularly feeds thousands of people.   In this episode we cover it all, in great detail – and it’s a blockbuster. He’s a man making a huge difference in Kiwi communities and we’re so thrilled to share his story.  We’re also thrilled to announce Dave has joined us at B2B Speakers, our business that brings our guests to your events. Guy Montgomery is one of New Zealand’s best and most popular comedians who has been a fixture on Kiwi screens for over a decade.  He’s been on Taskmaster, 7 Days, Celebrity Treasure Island and Have you Been Paying attention, while simultaneously selling out standup shows across Australia and New Zealand.  Last year, his new show: Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont-Spelling Bee premiered on Three to rave reviews and his new standup show took out the coveted Fred Award at the NZ comedy festival for best new show.  In his spare time, he also created NZ’s most popular podcast called The Worst Idea of All Time – which has had over 10 million downloads.  In this episode we talk about the time he slept in a New York sewer for a week, his most outrageous bets, why he had a stand-off with my father-in-law at a recent comedy show, his rise through the NZ comedy ranks, reflections on the life of a step-dad and much, much more.  Guy has reached the summit of NZ comedy and it’s easy to see why. He’s quick, he’s fun and silly but he’s also a deep thinker with a wicked work ethic and desire to keep growing. This was such a fun one.  Listen on iheart or wherever you get your podcasts from, or watch the video on Youtube.   If you’d like to hire one of our guests to speak at your function or event, flick us a message by going to B2Bspeakers.co.nz.  This episode was brought to you from the Export Beer garden studio. Dr Inia Raumati is one of our Low Key Legends – a man who lives life in the extremes.  He works as an emergency doctor at Auckland City Hospital, was deployed to Iraq with the NZ army, holds a blue-belt in Jui Jitsu and has volunteered on rescue helicopters.  He is one of only a small group of people who have run the 4 Deserts Grand Slams, completing multi-day “raids” across the Sahara, Gobi, Atacama, and the Antarctic.  This year, Inia plans on being the first person in the world to run a self-supported, multi-stage ultra marathon (that’s over 250 km per race) on every continent, in a single year.  In this episode we talk about how running helped him deal with his anger in his youth, surfing without knowing how to swim, the obstacles he’s overcome, his path into medicine and the challenges of being a maori doctor in New Zealand, the most incredible stories from his ultra-marathon missions around the world and the logistics of working towards this year’s goal.  Inia is a candid, Kiwi bloke, whose honest sensibility, humour, and grounded nature was refreshing - and his mental hardness and mindset will blow you away. This is an ep not to be missed. Listen on iheart or wherever you get your podcasts from, or watch the video on Youtube.   If you’d like to hire one of our guests to speak at your function or event, flick us a message by going to B2Bspeakers.co.nz.  This episode was brought to you from the Export Beer garden studio.
