My name is Amer Nabil, nurse practitioner in psychiatry and the principal owner of Half Full Psychiatry - treating with medication management and/or psychotherapy for ADHD, Depression, Anxiety, OCD. Transcription For Today's Video: Today we're going to talk about walking and its impact, positive impact on brain health, its impact on neuroplasticity, and enhancement of our frontal lobe, and how all that relates [ to productivity and focus, and I will draw upon certainly a lot of studies that have [ been done, but also my personal and clinical experience working with clients with ADHD. [ Having said that, let's get started. [ Hi, my name is Amer Nabil. [ I'm a nurse practitioner in psychiatry and also the principal owner of Half Full Psychiatry. [ My practice, Half Full Psychiatry, is based out of Glastonbury, Connecticut. [ My primary responsibility on a day-to-day basis includes medication management and [ or psychotherapy, if needed, in specialty of ADHD, depression, anxiety, and OCD. [ Just so you know, on a beautiful day like today, I am a daily walker, so I really tried [ to record all of this outside while I was walking. [ I thought it's going to look cool, but it looked pretty destructive, so I went ahead [ and brought things indoors. [ I personally started walking about four years ago, so it has not been that long, but I can [ tell you that I can still remember the first day I went out to walk for about 20 minutes, [ and I really enjoyed the experience, and it just continued. I personally have seen the benefits of walking from a mind-clarity standpoint and from a [ meditative standpoint, but today I want to add data and studies that will hopefully encourage [ you to start walking or the ones who have been walking to encourage you to keep this [ thing going. [ I definitely want to make sure that these videos that I would be producing, the primary [ purpose for me is to share my thoughts based on my clinical experience for the last 12 years in psychiatry. [ Needless to say, these are not direct treatment recommendations for you, and for that I certainly [ recommend your doctor, your nurse practitioner, your psychiatrist. First and foremost, I want to direct your attention to a study that was done in the late 1980s [ by Kirk Erickson out of the University of Pittsburgh. The study essentially found that walking one mile a day can enhance the volume of several critical areas of the brain. [ In other words, enhancing the volume of the brain or certain parts of the brain that are [ related to focus concentration is a positive thing in this case. [0] So in any case, this study showed the enhancement of the part of the brain called the frontal [ lobe from walking daily, and as I said earlier, at least one mile a day. [ Just to let you know, frontal lobe is part of the brain, which is kind of the frontal [ side of it, as it says, and prefrontal cortex is part of the frontal lobe, again on the forebrain [ or right about here. [ It has to do a lot with our language, our memory, our tension span, focusing, calculation, you name it. [And of course, as I said earlier, I work with a lot of clients on the ADHD realm with medication management and or psychotherapy. [ And one of the primary goals is to enhance the frontal lobe and maybe more specifically the prefrontal cortex right here on the forebrain, right about there. [ That has to do with focus and concentration. So again, those of you who are not walking, all you need to get started is at least 15 minutes, 15 to 30 minutes, get a mile out. And as the Ericsson study shows a mile of walking and its #brainhealth #mentalhealth #amernabil #halfffullpsychiatry #adhd #neuroplasticity #productivity #connecticut #psychiatrist Visit our clinic - Half Full Psychiatry website to schedule a visit: https://halffullpsychiatry.com/ Follow Amer Nabil on INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theamernabil/
