I'm a native from Maracaibo and this is the first I come across any literature that encaptures so many aspects of my youth in my grandmother's house... minus the ghosts, of course. Thank you, and Mrs Hurtado of course, for making such a beautiful portrait of my past come to life as a protagonist in this media, it was an unprecedented and unexpected amazing surprise.

I've probably listened to 75% of LeVar Burton Reads podcasts and always enjoy them. This is a great story as well. My only issue with this particular reading is that the background music and effects were too loud and distracting.

I have been a fan from Roots to Star Trek to Reading Rainbow. His voice is like silk, and I hope he continues to read to us for many years to come. He is a national treasure!

I love how differently we can interpret this story - I felt she hadn't yet made a decision about her future, only that she wouldn't (/couldn't?) discuss it with Leslie. I hope she went back to befriend Phillis, maybe that open mind would be a better sounding board for her. Also, it just occurred to me - could the name be a nod to the (first published African-American) poet & ex-slave Phillis Wheatley?

This story and author is powerful. It made me feel inquisitive and fulfilled. Ironically, like the letter, I felt she was speaking to me. And I needed to hear this. Wonderful beginning to this season!

It wasn't until the end that I realized it's the love of the mystical higher power she brings into focus. Why are tears gathering in my eyes? Why this smile too? These are the words we long to hear from a secret place within ourselves that we can never fully know. This podcast is a gift that nourishes my heart. thank you!

this was my first episode--didnt know what to expect! so of course I have to exclaim. Levar reads so well, and there are sound effects, even. I thought he was going to read the whole book, haha! when he quit, and started to editorialize, I flinched, but his words were so personal and challenging that I became a fan immediately. I want Levar to write a book, a memoir. He's a black man who has played a role I remember, Kunta Kinte. we loved him as Jordy on Star trek, which was "multicultural." My kids loved him on Reading Rainbow. what must it have been like for him to grow comfortable in his skin? I want to know! especially because he's been so forthcoming with his struggle.
