Floral designer of Planks and Pistils John Caleb Pendleton joins host JP Reynolds to talk about flowers, black masculinity and beauty. About John Caleb Pendleton: John always loved flowers but never really gave that part of himself attention, as it is not something encouraged for little boys in Grove Hill, Alabama. But love, it’ll change you! John's love for woodworking and flowers began with his parents. “Planks” honors his incredibly generous father and “Pistils” (female reproductive organ of the flower) honors his powerfully considerate mother. Planks & Pistils started as a seed planted in the love of his family. John married Kari Starks 2016. She loved flowers and became his reason to purchase, and eventually arrange, them. In 2017, John grew bold enough to share an arrangement on Instagram and he has been designing ever since then. John's priority in life and in this business is to encourage human flourishing while understanding that cannot happen without Black freedom. In 2020, Zaki launched the #EndPerpetualPunishment arts campaign, which uses murals and art in the neighborhoods most impacted by the criminal justice system to educate and empower community members around making policy change (see brief video here). He is also working on a documentary, and is nearly finished with an illustrated booklet that will guide a series of community-facing events. In addition to his activism work, Zaki continues to be a licensed barber and DJ, using his crafts to connect with the community. Prison Abolition (33:33) • How Are We Doing? (41:25) • Forgiveness (47:03) • Faith's Role in Prison Justice (49:15) • Joy (53:16) • How to Get Involved (59:18) Important Note: We wanted to clear any potential confusion regarding the segment on faith and its relationship to prison justice. Zaki was moved by the mention of biblical figure Abraham (50:30) who, according to the text, was not technically wanted for murder, but instead had his faith tested by being commanded to murder his own son. He did not, however, carry out that action. (Genesis 21-22) Another ancient biblical figure, Moses, actually did commit murder, then fled after being wanted for murder by the government. (Exodus 2:11-15) The point of highlighting these figures, who are held in high spiritual esteem by multiple sacred religious communities, is to re-orient how we may look at currently incarcerated or formerly incarcerated persons as they relate to holiness, redemption, and restorative justice. If the Creator would see fit to redeem and even honor the stories and legacies of these people upon whom entire religions are founded, then perhaps our earthly systems should see fit to do the same in our own time. Mental health professionals and twin founders of Unearth + Bloom, Khadijah & Zakiyyah Abdul-Mateen join host JP Reynolds for a conversation about intergenerational healing, meaningful liberation, and ancestral rhythms. About Unearth + Bloom: Khadijah and Zakiyyah are a twin sister team and founders of Unearth and Bloom. They have created a business, which focuses on the many ways trauma affects the mental, emotional and physical well-being amongst people of African descent. Zakiyyah is an EMDR-Trained Child, Adolescent and Young Adult Psychotherapist, who uses child-centered meditative practices to reduce anxiety associated with traumatic memory. In her private practice, she is intentional about normalizing mental health in black and brown communities and using a culturally sensitive approach. She is also a part of a team who engages in international work, which includes providing mental health trainings to adults and community leaders in Haiti. Khadijah is a Mental Health Professional and International Yoga instructor who uses yoga and meditative practices, which centers movement and connections to the body, as a way to respond and release, stored trauma--much of which is intergenerational. Khadijah is the Founder of the "OM in Africa" project, which centers intergenerational healing throughout Africa. She has collaborated with yoga instructors in Kenya, Uganda, Namibia, and Botswana to provide yoga and healing circles to women in prison, juvenile centers (boy and girls), schools, and local communities. Together they use a holistic approach to illuminate health and wellness by conducting talk therapy groups and yoga to address trauma in the mind and the body. Our belief is that Trauma mustn’t only be released in the mind through talk therapy but also in the body through breathing and movement. This provides access to achieve total healing of our traumatic past.
