This week, we chatted to our friend Jack. We had a big conversation, as we always do, about how we must approach education for those that need it most. Jack Simmonds is a tutor for Nudge Education, a talented musician and chorister and, of course, Qualified Tutor's wonderful course facilitator and Community leader.Jack has worked with many students over the years and recently, with Nudge, has found himself supporting students who are, as the title suggests, disengaged from school. This means that the traditional school system doesn't have the time and/or space for them. This is where tutors can step in and make a real difference. The content of this conversation will go a long way to altering your view on what bringing a smile, being empathetic and understanding neurodiversity really means.Next steps:Check out our CPD-Accredited Tutor Training course at qualifiedtutor.org/training/cpd-accredited-tutor-training and reach out to Jack in the Qualified Tutor Community at qualifiedtutorcommunity.orgJoin The Qualified Tutor Podcast Group in the Qualified Tutor Community and meet fellow listeners like you!Qualified Tutor is a tutor-training organisation, with a suite of high-quality, industry-first programmes. It's hard to know what life is like in prison if you haven't experienced it. For a chronically disengaged student, it's much the same. Claire Smith understands both.Claire is a compassionate and highly experienced tutor for Nudge Education. Previously, Claire worked as Head of Education at not only Wormwood Scrubs Prison in London but also HMP Bronzefield, in Middlesex. We challenge you to find a more open and, at times, brutally honest conversation than this one. Young offenders and prisoners are hidden from society but, if Claire's experience is anything to go by, these are the individuals who need our community-led approach to learning the most. What we are most proud of, apart from giving someone as well travelled and well versed as Claire a platform to share her experiences, is the power of the Qualified Tutor training courses. Claire was able to find confidence and support through our tutor training programme and the community we've created, and we're very grateful to Nudge and to our amazing Community members for sharing in this.Next step:Join The Qualified Tutor Podcast Group in the Qualified Tutor Community and meet fellow listeners like you!Qualified Tutor is a tutor-training organisation, with a suite of high-quality, industry-first programmes. What many tutors struggle with is knowing how to take the next step. Don't worry, it's very common. Joanne Kaminski has spent her life learning how to make this happen.Hailing from Wisconsin, Joanne is a former classroom teacher who needed a change in life. That change was stepping back from teaching and turning her skills to tutoring ... and coaching. Because it's through her experience of setting up 5 businesses in a year and failing at them all that Joanne has learnt what it really takes to succeed.Today, Joanne runs reading classes for students around the world alongside her highly successful tutor coaching business. After a wonderful day of NTP conversation at the Festival, we ended the day with a view from the frontline. Linda, Jolyon and Hazel take us through what they've learnt. From steep learning curves with the tech to changes to the way a tutor should approach a session, the NTP has brought about a shift in the way tutoring is viewed in this country. While higher level conversations about the direction of the Programme are important, we can't forget the boots on the ground. Those making the change happen day in, day out.If you have been working on the NTP this year, much of what our 3 guests discuss here will resonate with you. Since the death of her son, Dan, in 2014, Fiona Spargo-Mabbs has dedicated her life to supporting young people to make safe choices about drugs. Now we turn to tutors. A tutor has a unique position in a young person's life, different to that of a parent or a teacher. And Fiona has important words of wisdom for tutors and the role they can play in helping students transition from one phase of school to the next.Tutors so often work with students at crucial moments in their education and it is at precisely these moments that students need the most support; they are at their most vulnerable when under exam pressure and when changing schools. Listen in from [18:50] to hear Fiona’s expert advice for tutors. Fiona is the Director and Founder of the Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation, who work to increase the understanding around drugs and alcohol. We urge you to check out their suite of workshops, training programmes, resources and community, whether you or your children have been affected by drugs and alcohol or not.As per the conversation we ended the episode with, if you'd like to get in touch to discuss how the tutoring sector could work with the drugs and alcohol education sector, then please email ludo@qualifiedtutor.org.Qualified Tutor is a tutor-training organisation, with a suite of high-quality, industry-first programmes. Many parents and educators have turned to online communities for support and resources since March 2020. There are very few groups who have provided more than Agness O'Brien's.The 11+, ISEB, SATs, GCSE & A-level Resource Group, newly Affiliate Partners of TTA (pretty special for a Facebook group) and recently partnering with Qualified Tutor, provides a wealth of resources, live events, emotional support, helpful guidance and learning materials to over 13,000 members. Since last spring, the group has more than doubled and continues to grow every day. The equation is simple: if you'd like to get access to resources and support from thousands of educators, parents and specialists stretching back over 5 years, then this is the place to be. And it's all down to Agness and her wonderful team of admins and moderators.By signing up, you'll also immediately find a short introductory video that gives info on all the moving parts of the group, including crucially how to navigate the thousands of resources and posts. Once podcast systems have reached a point where videos can be posted in show notes, that video will be up quicker than you can say ...Qualified Tutor is a tutor-training organisation, with a suite of high-quality, industry-first programmes. Welcome to the first of our Late Night Live Podcasts from the Love Tutoring Festival. Our Monday podcast welcomed on Nina Jackson, Amanda Cremona and Clio Tucker.Nina Jackson is 'the Ninja'.Amanda Cremona is the tutor that every student with dyslexia needs to work with. Clio Tucker is the student who 'failed her A-levels', and was oh so enriched by it.The topics discussed were varied and the conversation was aided admirably by participation from our live audience. We began with a true discussion on the advancements of accessibility in tech, followed by the impact of neurodiversity on learning, before drawing the conversation to a close with a look at the widely superfluous nature of homework and the effect it has on many students' learning.(And if you think your access to the Festival is OVER, then think again! Sharon Cawley is a pioneer of the partnership between tutors, teachers and schools. She has a huge following of teachers, tutors and small business owners ... and rightly so.Sharon started her career as an English teacher in 1994. Today, Sharon runs the hugely successful Conexus Tuition which currently works with over 4000 children in schools.Sharon does not shy away from discussing her own journey from teaching to tutoring which, in 2012, consisted of being left without work, on the dole. Just 8 years later, Sharon heads up an NTP Tuition Partner organisation.More importantly though, she'd like to meet Greg Davies, and potentially marry him too. If you know how to make this happen, please get in touch. Finally, you can hear Sharon as part of the NTP Partners&Schools Roundtable at the Love Tutoring Festival on Thursday 1st July at 11am, alongside Manning's Tutors, Action Tutoring and EM Tuition.
