The Master Gardener Volunteer program started in Olympia, Washington. But did you know Florida's Master Gardener Volunteer Program originated from a conversation on a riverboat in Louisiana? It's that time of year! If you look closely, you'll notice towards the end of the month school buses and trucks filled with watermelon driving through the county, on their way to market. Watermelons are a major agricultural commodity in Florida and Alachua County. Tune in with us as we speak with Dr. Tatiana Sanchez the commercial horticulture agent with UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County. She works with many of our watermelon growers throughout the region and talks about the dedication from the growers and workers to get watermelons to market. Wilmot Gardens is a small, but vibrant corner on the University of Florida's campus that is filled with a booming collection of colorful camellias.
