510 - Assumptions Kill

When you make an assumption, you tell yourself that something is true without actually having any evidence that it is. It's all too easy to lead your life never questioning that you are assuming things to be facts. In today's podcast episode, I discuss what I've been learning about assumptions.  I learned they are not all bad - that we are actually wired to make assumptions.  But, it can be very harmful to us when we assume.  I talk about how assumptions affect us in our personal, spiritual, and business life.  Read More | My favorite assumption research links:How assumptions affect us relationallyHow assumptions affect us spiritually:   Gospel Coalition article   Is Assuming a sin?How assumptions affect us in businessMy raw, unedited notes on assumptions (Google Doc)
ADVENTURE - over the last month, that word -‘adventure’- keeps coming up in conversations I have, in sermons I hear, in podcasts I listen to, and in books I read. When I hear something over and over again, I know it’s something I need to pay attention to. ⠀⠀How about you? What resonates with you as you read this? What adventures are you taking with God? Where in your life can you be more of an open vessel - living with an open heart, an open mind, so you can contain the infinity of God? It’s such a mystery - but it’s an adventure!⠀
Before he died, a father said to his son; “Here is a watch that your grandfather gave me. It is almost 200 years old. Before I give it to you, go to the jewelry store downtown. Tell them that I want to sell it, and see how much they offer you.” ⠀⠀The son went to the jewelry store, came back to his father, and said; "They offered $150.00 because it's so old.” ⠀⠀The father said; “Go to the pawnshop." The son went to the pawnshop, came back to his father, and said; "The pawnshop offered $10.00 because it looks so worn.” ⠀⠀The father asked his son to go to the museum and show them the watch. He went to the museum, came back, and said to his father; “The curator offered $500,000.00 for this very rare piece to be included in their precious antique collections.” ⠀⠀The father said; “I wanted to let you know that the right place values you in the right way. Don't find yourself in the wrong place and get angry if you are not valued. Those that know your value are those who appreciate you, don't stay in a place where nobody sees your value.” ⠀Scriptures to meditate on:Psalm 139Matthew 6Romans 5Ephesians 2

This little rule has helped me so much as I've built communities online. How can you apply it in your life today?
Keeli Martinez @essentiallyobsessed shares how she developed one of the largest followings on Instagram. With over 110,000 followers, she has built one of the most successful network marketing business organizations using her online influence.  And, what's even more impressive is she did it organically - no tricks or black hat techniques.  This conversation occurred at a recent "Millennial Mastermind" I hosted for our DoTERRA team. A very inspiring conversation.  Connect with Keeli on her website
Kevin Kelly wrote one of the most influential blog posts in 2008 called 1,000 True Fans.  In it, he talked about the power of nurturing 1000 people who will buy, attend, and promote EVERYTHING you do and create.  The way to develop 1000 true fans is by being a specialist - not a generalist.  I explore how this became true for me in my business and what I did once I realized I needed to get out of the rat race of generalism and into the superhighway of specialism! Enjoy your Motivation Monday for today!
Have you ever wanted to write your own book?  Why haven't you done it yet?  Val tried writing one for years until she finally ran out of excuses, and most importantly saw the need was great.  Val takes us behind the scenes from the inspiration of her book, to the writing process, to putting it all together in order to self-publish and then what it's like on the other side once the book is out and to actually have created an Amazon Bestseller!  You'll love this interview if you've ever wanted to write and publish your own book, but don't know how to start.  Val walks us through her journey step by step!  Visit to get her book, Designed For Joy, and join her future Designed For Joy small groups!
First ever Motivation Monday on the Courage Cast. Every Monday I intend to share a short motivational message or life lesson.  First up, why I'm embracing my new nickname and theme for 2020 - SCRAPPY!
Do you believe that joy is a choice? Dawn Barton does. She's an upbeat Southerner with good hair and successful business background, but she's had more heartache than most of us can imagine. One of the most powerful abilities we have is helping others realize their potential. We can do this by praising their strengths. Yet, this is something we do so infrequently. Most of us respond bitterly to direct criticism. When we’re looking to change people without offending them or arousing resentment, simply changing one three-letter word can be our key to success.
