By the Numbers

This week on Around the OHL we look at the impact that the Miracle on Ice had on the Ontario Hockey League and we also talk with one of the best statisticians in hockey. Every young hockey player has options when it comes to their development. If you are good enough and fortunate enough to get to a high level, you might explore NCAA opportunities, you might choose major junior or you might be Auston Matthews and head for Switzerland. Following the Miracle on Ice on February 22, 1980 in which the United States upset the USSR at the Winter Olympics, the number of American-born players entering the Ontario Hockey League and being drafted by OHL teams began to increase significantly. London Knights colour commentator Jim Van Horne breaks down the numbers. Then we look at numbers in their purest forms with Geoffrey Brandow who provides fanatstic statistical breakdowns for games happening across the Canada Hockey League. His play this season has many hockey fans already looking forward to the 2022 NHL draft, where Wright will be one of, if not the top pick. The guys also check in with Victor Findlay, who looks at come recent OHL grads playing university hockey in Canada as the USPORTS playoffs are right in the thick of things.  Findlay also calls games for the Mississauga Steelheads, so he sheds some light on the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference, and how it should be smooth sailing for the Ottawa 67’s. Speaking of playoffs, Mike and Jake shares their thoughts on which path to the finals they would prefer, a relatively easy first three rounds where the teams wasn’t really battle tested, but is healthy for the finals. Or, a team that may be a bit beat up, but is operating on full cylinders after getting tested earlier in the playoffs.
