Pomona College Choir and Orchestra present the fourth movement, “Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen,” of Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem from their Spring 2016 performance. Following, are selections from Part 2 of Mendelssohn’s oratorio, Elijah, recorded at the Spring 2017 performance—“Behold, God the Lord passèd by,” along with “And then shall your light.” Eric Lindholm conducts the ensembles and Donna M. The music of G.F. Handel, performed by the Cornucopia Baroque Ensemble, comprises this week’s podcast. Soprano Melissa Givens joins the period-instrument ensemble singing his German aria Die ihr aus dunkeln Grüften, it is followed by the first two movements from his Trio Sonata in F Major, Op. 2, No. 4. The episode closes with the aria In den angenehmen Büschen, again with Ms. Givens. We are delighted to present two organ selections this week, performed on the C.B. Fisk (Op.117), Hill Memorial Organ by College Organist William J. Peterson from his CD “Recital at Bridges Hall.” The first is Alexandre Guilmant’s Choral, Op. 49, No. 3, composed in 1876, and it is followed by Jacques Ibert’s Choral: Justorum animae in manu Dei sunt from an anthology published in 1921. Two selections from our ethnomusicology area comprise this week’s episode. The first features Assistant Professor of Music Gibb Schreffler singing and playing on a period accordion, on a song popular on Pacific Ocean whaling ships in the mid-nineteenth century, “Roolin down to Old Mowhee.” Then we shift to Bali for “Bapang Selisir” a traditional Balinese Gamelan piece performed by Giri Kusuma, Pomona College’s Gamelan ensemble, with friends from Cal Arts, under the direction of Nyoman Wenten.
