Bannockburn is a regional golf club west of Geelong in Victoria, and a long way from where Brett grew up in Winnipeg, Canada. Yes, that's right, Canada!Growing up in an extremely cold environment and working on golf courses in Canada, as it turns out, is seasonal work. And it wasn't too long before a young Brett travelled to Australia's Gold Coast, far away from the cold environment he was so used to.Working back in Canada for a few more years after visiting Australia, Brett felt maybe Australia was a place to get consistent work on a golf course. And so Melbourne was soon to become his new home.Join Brett and I as we discover his career in greenkeeping that brought him to Australia where he would find his future wife, enjoy a love of travel, knuckle down to become a superintendent, and I also learn a few new words and phrases along the way! Brett is also my first Canadian born guest and this is one awesome yarn! You hit 'em clean and we'll keep 'em green! The Golfing Greenkeeper - InstagramThe Golfing Greenkeeper - FacebookThe Golfing Greenkeeper TV - YouTubeSend me an email to - [email protected]People and places mentioned in this podcast:Bannockburn Golf ClubBoomerang HillsFalcon Lake Golf CourseBridges Golf CourseZamboni Ice Resurfacer - YouTubeSorrento Golf ClubSydney Swans Football ClubEssendon Bombers Football ClubEynesbury Golf ClubStrathallen Golf ClubAxedale Golf ClubPacific Coast DesignLara Golf ClubInverleigh Golf ClubEP.54 Keeper of the Greens - Nico DouglasEP.100 Keeper of the Greens - When the Host Becomes the Guest

The Design Brief segment of The Golfing Greenkeeper Podcast is proudly brought to you by McMahons. Check out their website to get a better understanding of their suite of services and outstanding portfolio of golf course construction and other sports turf work at www.mcmahons.net.auJustin Trott is a name you may not be familiar with. But after this podcast episode you may well be asking, how did I not know?!Justin grew up in a small regional township just outside Melbourne and was keen golfer. It was a very good round of golf and chance meeting with Ross Perrett as a kid that set a path for Justin's future to becoming a golf course architect. That chance meeting soon gave way to Justin doing work experience with Ross which then would see Justin's career begin at the same time as the boom of golf in Australia during the late 80's and early 90's working ultimately in the design house of the well known Thomson Wolveridge Perrett of the time.Fast forward to today after being involved with numerous projects in many different capacities such as The National Golf Club, Moonah Links, Hamilton Island Golf Club, Cape Wickham, and most recently, The Cliffs Kangaroo Island, and Justin has now amassed a long, established, and fruitful career as a golf course architect, often without public recognition.Join me on this incredible journey as Justin takes us through some of his biggest career moments, including a few stories about the late Peter Thomson, and a look into the future of golf course architecture in Australia as President of the Society of Australian Golf Course Architects. You hit 'em clean and we'll keep 'em green! The Golfing Greenkeeper - InstagramThe Golfing Greenkeeper - FacebookThe Golfing Greenkeeper TV - YouTubeSend me an email to - [email protected] and places mentioned in this podcast:Justin Trott - SAGCA ProfileIngham Golf Club - FacebookMcLeod Country Golf ClubRichard Chamberlain - SAGCA ProfileShelly Beach Golf ClubPerrett WebbIndooroopilly Golf ClubNewcastle Golf ClubHarrison GolfThe Cliffs Kangaroo IslandManly Golf ClubLinks Hope IslandSandhurst ClubRoyal Portrush Golf ClubBrora Golf ClubThe National Golf ClubKew Golf ClubRACV Cape Schanck Golf CourseRoss Perrett - SAGCA ProfileLakeside Golf Club CamdenSanctuary Lakes Golf ClubTed Parslow - SAGCA ProfileBrett Mogg - SAGCA ProfileShanghai Yintao Golf Club - The Golf AsiaMoonah Links - Open CourseCommonwealth Golf ClubHuntingdale Golf ClubRoyal Melbourne Golf ClubKingston Heath Golf ClubDan Soutar - WikiVictoria Golf ClubHamilton Island Golf ClubKeith Williams - WikiLindsay Calvert - SAGCA ProfileCape Wickham Golf LinksKingscote Golf Club - FacebookSAGCA Golf Architecture MagazineLovedale Farm Golf CourseDarius OliverPeter Thomson - WikiSt Andrews Beach Golf CourseThe Blues Brothers - WikiSociety of Australian Golf Course Architects (SAGCA)Australian Sports Turf Managers Association (ASTMA)Golf Management Association (GMA)EP.149 Keeper of the Greens - Dion CopeEP.198 The Design Brief - Harley KruseEP.210 The Design Brief - Paul MogfordEP.63 Keeper of the Greens - Brad HoleEP.170 The Board Room - Sam AtkinsEP.106 The Design Brief - Richard ChamberlainEP.187 The Design Brief - Scott Champion

When you work where others play, you need a partner you can trust to keep your course in perfect condition. Find your nearest John Deere dealer at deere.com.auRichard Flesser is the superintendent of the Jack Nicklaus signature designed Lakelands Golf Club on the Gold Coast in Queensland. He might be leading the team maintaining this well known course right now, but his career began far from the highs of such a facility.Growing up as a Gold Coast boy, Richard wasn't one of those kids who was always chasing golf. Whilst he began mowing lawns at an early age, his father was a butcher by trade, and Richard went about earning money trying his hand at a number of different jobs. When he did get an opportunity to work on a golf course, it wasn't the glamourous well known tracks of the Gold Coast we hear about today, but it was a start nevertheless! From here he would go on to help build a number of the most well known golf courses of the Gold Coast through the boom years of golf in the 1990's before settling into a career greenkeeping groove at Royal Pines and then Lakelands Golf Club itself.Join Richard and I as he takes us on a nostalgic trip through the years of golf on the Gold Coast and hearing about the rise in his career along with the rise of golf on the Gold Coast, learning and experiencing some of the highest level of maintenance and presentation of any golf course working under some of the country's best greenkeepers. You hit 'em clean and we'll keep 'em green! The Golfing Greenkeeper - InstagramThe Golfing Greenkeeper - FacebookThe Golfing Greenkeeper TV - YouTubeSend me an email to - [email protected]People and places mentioned in this podcast:Lakelands Golf ClubTeven Golf ClubSurfers Paradise Golf ClubEmerald Lakes Golf ClubSanctuary Cove Golf and Country ClubPalm Meadows Golf CourseRACV Royal Pines Golf CourseLong Reef Golf ClubMacquarie Links Golf ClubSave North Lakes Golf CourseHarbour Town Golf LinksKooralbyn Valley Golf CourseThe Glades Golf ClubEP.209 Keeper of the Greens - Glenn BeauclercEP.200 Celebrating 200 EpisodesEP.154 Keeper of the Greens - Scott ArmstrongEP.135 Steve's Random Special Guests - Mike O'Keeffe
