Hello, everyone! My name is Trey Hanawalt, and I’m an audio engineer based in Portland, Oregon. I used to own a label called Lost State Records from 2013 to 2021. In this episode, I talk about my experience being diagnosed with ADHD at 32 years old, and the challenges that come with living and working in the music industry while navigating it. ADHD can be difficult for many people, and in this episode, I share some personal stories and insights from my own life, though fair warning, I do tend to ramble a bit (the ADHD struggle is real, especially without a set outline or plan for the podcast).I hope you enjoy the episode, and if you like what you hear, consider following us on Spotify and checking us out on our social platforms. In this episode, I invited our friend Elle Gillian to join us. Elle and I played together in the band American Memories back in the day. We were part of the Emo Revival scene, not as a prominent band, but we were connected to the scene and closely followed its evolution while it lasted.
We discuss the bands, the stories, and personal experiences during that time. We also explore the bands that spearheaded the movement, the subsequent aftermath of the Emo Revival, and what remains of it in the current state of music.

In this episode, I take a deep dive into the story of Behringer, a company that’s sparked endless debates in the audio world. I’ll walk you through their beginnings, how Uli Behringer set out to make affordable gear for musicians like us, and how that mission led to both massive success and major controversy. From cloning accusations and lawsuits to PR disasters like the “Cork Sniffer” incident, I’ll unpack the ups and downs of Behringer’s journey.

In this podcast episode, we explore the growing frustration among bands and artists over the increasingly common practice of merch cuts. These are percentages taken by venues (often larger ones) out of the earnings bands make from selling their own merchandise during shows. For many artists, especially smaller and mid-level touring bands, merch sales are a vital source of income that helps cover touring expenses like gas, lodging, and crew pay.
We’ll explore how these merch cuts work, often ranging from 10% to 30% of gross sales, and how this disproportionately affects independent artists who already operate on tight margins. We also discuss how major companies, including promoters, venue operators, and multi-conglomerates like Live Nation and AEG, contribute to this exploitative practice, taking money from the bands that bring fans to their venues. Through firsthand stories and analysis, we shed light on why this issue has sparked outrage across the music industry and discuss the broader implications for artists' financial sustainability on tour.

I recently had a chat with my friend Jeremy McGuire, who is a member of several bands including Machinist!, Leg Biters, Pope Boner, and Sports Reference. Additionally, he runs and owns Killer Robot Music. Jeremy and I go way back, and the first time we met was when I helped set up a show for Machinist! at a dive bar in California while they were on tour and needed to book a date. Our mutual friend Zeke (RIP) told me they needed help, so I took a chance and assisted them. Since then, we have become good friends and collaborated on various projects. I hope you enjoy our conversation!
