Start-ups need to be strong-minded. Start-ups need to lead with confidence. Without such strength, how can a business expect to survive especially when times are tough? But strength is also a weakness. Too much strength can blind start-ups and derail thinking. Too much strength can alienate others or turn them into ‘yes’ people. In life and business, mistakes are inevitable. And we have all done things that have led to shame. So how do entrepreneurs embrace weaknesses, getting things wrong and feelings of shame? This fascinating episode explores the world of start-up vulnerability and seeks behavioural answers that will help entrepreneurs to connect more deeply with others and lead with greater confidence and ability. Ultimately, by understanding and embracing vulnerability anyone involved with startup will achieve greater results.Learn more about our special guest This episode’s special guest is serial entrepreneur Kyle Hegarty. Episode 3.7 - Empathy

Episode 3.7 - Empathy

2022-04-1953:07

Successful startups create and build long-term relationships. Building long-term relationships requires us to empathise with others.Starting and sustaining any new business is a huge challenge and requires deep reserves of energy. As a result, startup entrepreneurs typically feel compelled to tell other people what they do because no-one will do it for them. But whilst this personal promotion sounds logical, ‘telling’ people about our work doesn’t help us to understand them – and thus build empathy. In this enthralling episode, communications and language specialist Derek Utley (81), reflects on his life and how and why taking the time to create empathy with others is a fundamental building block in the development of our business and personal lives.Learn more about the special guestA lover of languages and teaching, Derek Utley took up his first post as a teacher of Spanish and French at Charterhouse School in 1963. Nearly twenty years later Derek co-founded York Associates, a highly successful language training and intercultural communications company used by many multi-national organisations. Now retired, Derek is a keen community volunteer leading weekly walks and helping people in the north-east plant trees.Subscribe to the podcastIf you enjoy the Startup Survival Podcast and want to receive news and notifications of upcoming episodes, subscribe here.A bit of podcast author background...UK-based Peter Harrington set up his first business following graduation in York in 1989. Do you remember the scenes at Bournemouth Beach on the 25th of June 2020?Reported as a major incident, thousands of sunseekers flocked to the sands in the middle of a heatwave - in the middle of the pandemic.Covid meant social distancing had become the social norm. Yet despite desperate pleas to 'Keep Your Distance' and stay away, this popular Dorset resort reported record numbers of people who seemingly covered every inch of Bournemouth's golden sands. Public services were overwhelmed.Over 500 parking fines, 3 pier stabbings and 33 tonnes of litter were just some of the consequences of this 'Great British' gathering.Meanwhile back in North West London...Whilst watching the BBC's evening report, John Rathbone and Duncan Bennetts of the band 'Seajam Moths' used the scenes in Bournemouth as inspiration to write and produce (all remotely) the track 'Keep Your Distance' which is part of their first album - all available on  Spotify.Singer, songwriter and music production specialist, Duncan Bennetts, is not only half of Seajam Moths but is also the producer of The Startup Survival Podcast. Duncan kindly lent the 'Keep Your Distance' music to the podcast and he even sings the final voiceover on each episode. Listen out for his 'Better Further'.Read the BBC Bournemouth Beach Report
