Challenges in life and business are opportunities to trust God and grow in our faith. We’ll be digging into that with varying perspectives and voices throughout the series. (By the way, if you or someone you know would be a great fit for this series, please contact me at info@fxmissions.com.) To start out, I decided I’d like to share more of my own story. To be specific, one specific crisis story. This story unfolds in two parts, so be sure to listen to both as I relay what transpired, how I got through it, how it shaped my business and, most importantly, how it impacted and changed me. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Operate from the understanding that you’re already accepted by God. Don’t be driven by the spirit of the age. Leadership is about more than just doing the right thing, it's also about knowing what that is. Listen to discover the value of discerning God's will.  Read the Blog Post Share on Twitter Share on Facebook We all want to do the right thing, but sometimes it's hard to know what that is. There are so many opportunities to serve that those of us who truly have a heart to serve have to be careful, or we can do more harm than good. If we're not careful, we could be walking in the PRESUMPTION that God will equip and empower us, without knowing for sure that we're actually CALLED. If we're doing the wrong thing (or the right thing at the wrong time or with the wrong people) we might be walking in the PRESUMPTION that God will equip us, without knowing for sure that we're actually CALLED. Let's be careful to always walk fully in God's calling and serve well as leaders. KEY TAKEAWAYS Choose wisely who and when you serve. Don't PRESUME God will equip you for something without first confirming that He's CALLED you to it. Be careful how you set expectations for yourself and others. Leadership is about so much more than being the boss. It's about doing what you need to do to set up and support your team members for success.  Leadership Lessons From a Broken Ice Cream Machine One Click Tweet One Click Facebook Share -- Bryan Entzminger and Scott McClelland continue their conversation about what leadership lessons we can learn from a broken ice cream machine. They talk about commander's intent, the dangers of institutionalization, and the importance of truly supporting people--because sometimes what works for one person at one place and time will not work for another. KEY TAKEAWAYS:  Leadership is leadership, no matter the situation. We can’t assume the same things will work for everyone, everywhere. There’s danger in organizational growth. The commander’s intent is a critical leadership principle. A broken ice cream machine at McDonald's might seem like a small thing, but it says something about priorities, leadership, and unmet expectations. The Ice Cream Machine at McDonald’s is Broken Again … Why It Matters - LM0218 One Click Facebook Share One Click Tweet How many times has this happened to you? You've been heading to a McDonald’s, excited about getting an ice cream cone. You get there, place your order in the Drive-Thru, and then discover that the machine is broken? If that's happened to you, you're not alone. But here's the deal - we ALL create "ice cream machine" experiences for our customers and partners from time-to-time. They come to us for that ONE THING, and we fail to deliver for them. And when that's the case, it all comes down to leadership. Our leadership.   KEY TAKEAWAYS: It all comes down to leadership. We need to understand what our customers and partners value most. We need to understand when we’re missing the mark, and make changes to correct. The key to true transformational leadership is a willingness to be the first to change, to always be learning and engaging culture, and to invest time in deep relationships with others before ever trying to lead change. This may be one of the most challenging tasks for any leader, because it goes against our nature. But if we don’t do it, our attempts to affect real change will never work. Listen as Scott and Dr. Noah Manyika continue their conversation about transformational leadership. Listen to Discover: The one kind of expectations most likely to put us into an awkward position or make us feel like we’ve been blindsided. When cross-cultural missionaries can assume they’ve dug deep enough into understanding culture and relationships (hint: never). How our expectations can create a great chasm between what we think we’re communicating and what is actually heard and how it’s understood. Why we should prepare as though the unexpected will happen (and why it’s biblical). Why understanding and connecting with people is the key. Want to be a transformational leader? Contrary to what many would say, there are no shortcuts. There are no hacks to truly being equipped to lead people into and through transformation – whether personal, community, or other. Listen as Dr. Noah Manyika shares about lifelong learning, the value of learning from other cultures, and some key pitfalls that often crop up. Listen to Discover: How a posture of humility can lead to lifelong learning and growth. How our experience might actually leave us ill-prepared for what we need to do. One thing people often misunderstand about Africa. The danger of viewing regional, or even local culture with a broad lens. How transformational leadership requires that we understand how things are while preparing people for what is actually to come. We know that God loves us and wants the best for us. But that doesn't mean that things will always be easy, or that we're never at risk of being deceived. Concluding our time with Terance Clark, he and Scott talk about what God has revealed and how many Believers aren't prepared for what's coming next. But that doesn't mean we're without hope. Listen to Discover: Why the saints are weak and what’s causing unbelief. What many of us forget, but we MUST remember – or we will be unpleasantly surprised. What we should focus on. A word from God is powerful. It can sustain. It can direct. It can encourage or give freedom. And, thankfully, we know that God speaks to us in many ways - and continues to do so, even to today. But, as we look across the landscape, it seems like so many Christian leaders say they’re sharing what God has shown them, yet disagree amongst themselves, as though God might be unsure what He’s saying. And we know that God is not a God of confusion. We know it’s important to hear from God. But how can we know that it’s really God’s voice? As we continue the conversation we started with Terance Clark in the last episode, you’ll discover  Why it seems like there’s so much contradiction. What’s often missing in our spiritual disciplines. Whose point of view really matters. Some ways God can enlighten us to how we’re seeing things incorrectly. What happens when we get ahead of what God’s revealed to us. What might need to happen as we begin to hear from God. What is often the source of self-promotion (hint: self-promotion isn’t a problem, it’s a symptom). How God gives us rest. What does leadership have to do with a supernatural encounter with God? As Terance Clark shares, sometimes it takes these kinds of experiences to get us to set aside our preconceptions, our desire to know and to control, and to lay down the things that preoccupy us. For some, this might be an uncomfortable idea -that we can experience the supernatural. That God might actually bypass our expectations and intervene. However, we have clear biblical examples of God doing just that. And there's no reason that God can't continue to reveal Himself however He wills. Listen to Discover: What reverence and fear of God really means. What can happen when we fail to realize who God REALLY is. What we're often preoccupied with. How God's perspective on leadership is different from our current cultural expectation. How God wants us to share what He's shown or told us. It seems like everywhere we look, leadership is glorified. It’s important, to be sure, but the real value of leadership is often overlooked while we focus on what seems to be glamorous. Michael Pollard draws from his experience, as well as years of leadership development and training, to share with us what is truly rewarding in leadership. Listen to Discover: What actually provides motivation. How many leaders actually spend their time, and why that’s upside down. Why great leaders often lose great people. What attracts great people. Why Walgreens was able to thrive, while their competitor, Eckerds, did not. And what that means to leaders. No matter where you are in your leadership journey, it’s always great to come back to the fundamentals of excellent leadership. How do I become a great leader? I’s a common question that many of us ask. And if we think of great leaders, we may think of business, military, political, or spiritual leaders as examples. However, that doesn’t always paint a picture of the path to get there. As Michael Pollard reveals, that path may not always be as linear as we’d like to think. And it is often NOT easy. However, for those called to lead well, there are no shortcuts.
