Delta 8 THC has exploded in the hemp industry with a lot of hype and controversy behind it. This psychoactive cannabinoid is in a legal grey area that allows for hemp processors to create a product similar to delta 9 THC without the legal ramifications of producing delta 9 outside of legal jurisdiction. Though less potent than its delta 9 sibling, delta 8 is less potent. Nonetheless, it is a psychoactive cannabinoid that does produce a “high” when used. For this reason, there is a lot of interest, and a lot of skepticism, surrounding this hemp compound. In this episode of extrakTALKS, Dr. Jon and Randall Thompson dive into the fascinating topic of delta 8 THC. They will detail a number of important factors including how delta 8 is made, the legal status of delta 8, the differences and similarities from delta 9, delta 8 and other hemp cannabinoids and much more.
Excipients are a crucial part of product formulation in the hemp extraction industry. Excipients act as a delivery method for desired cannabinoids like CBD to reach the bloodstream when taken by the end user. Without these excipients like surfactants, SEDDS, terpene blends, oils and others, the desired hemp compounds would be less available for the human body to absorb making them vitally important to the overall formulation process. There are a variety of important factors to consider when evaluating the right terpenes for extract products including stability, viscosity, solubility, delivery compatibility and more - all of which are covered in this podcast. In this episode of extrakTALKS, Dr. Jon and Randall Thompson discuss the importance of excipients in product formulation in the extraction industry. They cover important topics including how to establish your formulation requirements, risk assessment, sourcing quality ingredients, and proper formulation methods in your extraction operation.
In the hemp and botanical processing industry, cannabinoids often take center stage on the priority list. Most producers will be certain that their extraction, and distillation methods are tuned in perfectly to collect and preserve the best cannabinoids for product formulation down the line. But, terpenes are equally as vital to an end product, so why is there less emphasis on their collection, preservation and product formulation? If you aren’t properly identifying the best methods to collect and preserve those precious terps, you could be throwing money out the window! In part two of our discussion on terpenes, Dr. Jon and Randall begin the interesting discussion of the common ways hemp and botanical processors collect their terpenes. There are a number of ways this is accomplished: steam distillation, wiped film distillation, vacuum distillation, ethanol extraction, CO2 stripping and more. But what is the best method? And how would you employ it in your own hemp or botanical business? Using the extraktLAB method, terpenes are captured during the decarboxylation process using vacuum distillation to catch the very best terpenes AND to improve the extraction process overall. Want to learn how? Then this is the episode for you

What is the ultimate list of hemp strains? Believe it or not, not all hemp plants are created equal. Varying hemp strains can determine the formulation, effects and quality of a CBD extract. The reasons for this are plenty - varying levels of CBD content, terpenes located in the hemp strain, overall grow quality of a particular hemp strain - these are all factors in creating a particular hemp derived product. What’s more, a particular hemp strain can also determine the legality of a hemp product. Different hemp strains tend to have varying levels of THC - still federally illegal in the United States. If a hemp strain is grown that tends to have a higher level of THC, it can lead to a “hot crop.” This means that a test of a hemp grow can be tested and will have to be legally destroyed if THC levels are above .03%. Similar to this, other hemp strains can be grown to contain higher levels of CBG, CBN, and various terpenes to determine a unique hemp product. In this episode of extrakTALKS, Dr. Jon and Randall discuss the ultimate list of hemp strains. This episode will cover listener submitted survey questions on what strains farmers prefer to grow, which strains have the best flavor, aroma, and cannabinoid content, what they do to ensure the best grow possible and more.
When it comes to the United States, the legality and regulation of CBD is relatively straightforward under the 2018 Farm Bill. In the EU, however, regulations of CBD vary greatly making GMP compliance a more complicated conversation overall. Much like the FDA, the European Medicines Agency has regulations in place that regulate the use of CBD as a food or medicine product, but depending on the country itself, EU GMP compliance is widely different. For example, while CBD is considered an illegal narcotic in Sweden, but is considered to be a novel food in Spain. These discrepancies are widespread throughout the European Union, so what is the point of putting in the effort of being EU-GMP compliant? In this episode of extrakTALKS, Dr. Jon and Randall Thompson discuss the top five reasons to be EU-GMP in the CBD industry. Among the top five reasons in this episode are: Access to a 500M population, Taking advantage of a country by country EU market that is continuing to grow, opportunity to implement a pharmaceutical quality system that will increase the professionalism of your own company, Differentiation of your company, and Building consumer confidence in a quality product. Hemp Startup 101 - #19

Hemp Startup 101 - #19

Starting up a new business in any industry can be a daunting task, let alone an increasingly competitive atmosphere like the hemp and CBD industry. If you’re not careful, your plans to create a successful, profitable hemp processing business can crash and burn before you even get a foothold in the market. So, what should you take into consideration when diving into the hemp extraction industry? Have you considered the long-term profitability of your extraction method? What about the solvent you’ll decide to extract with? Have you looked into the local laws and regulations that might dictate your business practices? The questions can build and become more complicated as you consider everything you’ll need to get started, but luckily for you, extraktLAB is here to help.In this episode of extrakTALKS, Dr. Jon and Randall Thompson discuss the most important factors to creating your hemp startup from start to finish. A number of important factors need to be taken into consideration in nearly every aspect of the hemp extraction business from pre-processing biomass to extraction to distillation and every step in between. Whether or not you've planned out your extraction plans, or you have yet to consider the first steps of your hemp startup, this episode is for you.
Chromatography has become critically important for the widely popular formulations of CBD products including full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and CBD isolate - all of which are increasingly desired in the growing hemp extract markets. With the ability to selectively manipulate various cannabinoids, terpenes and other materials from the plant matrix, there are a number of methods by which chromatography can be accomplished, and various forms of chromatography have proven themselves to be advantageous for an number of reasons in larger scale extraction. For a hemp extract to be legal under the 2018 Farm Bill, any particular hemp product must contain less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a psychoactive cannabinoid. Lawmakers limited the amount of THC that could be present in hemp biomass so as to distinguish it from other cannabis plants that produce high amounts of the psychoactive component. When the biomass is extracted, however, the amount of THC in the extract is at a higher level than the limit that was established by the Farm Bill. As the oil becomes more refined, the concentration of THC will increase to the point where the oil is no longer fit for commerce. As a result, many producers have added a separation process into their hemp processing workflow. Hemp extract that has had THC removed from it is known as broad spectrum hemp oil. The production of broad-spectrum hemp oil typically requires the separation of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) from the other cannabinoids in the oil.In this episode of extrakTALKS, Dr. Jon and Randall Thompson discuss the ins and outs of chromatography in the hemp and cannabis industry. This important final step of hemp and cannabis extraction is critical for properly formulating CBD products in terms of legality and consumer preference. Watch and listen as Dr. Jon and Randall explain chromatography in detail and introduce extraktLAB's high performance liquid chromatography system - the pure99.
There is no doubt that CBD has swept the world as one of the hottest cannabinoids from the hemp plant. With the introduction of the 2018 Farm Bill, a whole world of hemp derived products. So long as a product has a THC content below 0.3% any derivative of CBD is technically legal under this jurisdiction. However, another hemp derived cannabinoid is rapidly gaining popularity in the hemp extraction industry: Delta-8-THC.“But wait,” you might say, “I thought THC was illegal?” The federal laws permitting the creation of CBD products applies to Delta-9-THC, the cannabinoid responsible for creating a high when smoking or ingesting marijuana products. This psychoactive cannabinoid has been a schedule 1 drug for decades, so what makes Delta-8 THC any different? It all lies in its creation. While Delta-9 is abundant in the marijuana plant, Delta-8 appears only in low levels. Because of this, Delta-8 has to be derived from cannabinoids found in hemp, not only to create products, but also to ensure those products are federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill. But how is it made? You’re about to find out.In this episode of extrakTALKS, Dr. Jon and Randall Thompson show you how Delta-8 THC  is made including the equipment needed, the cost of operation and the process to derive delta-8 from hemp cannabinoids. They also explain the legal status of delta-8, the difference between Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC and everything else you need to know about this fascinating cannabinoid in the hemp extraction industry.
