How do we navigate finding and reinterpreting our identity within cross cultural contexts and interdisciplinary techniques? Farah Behbehani is a Kuwaiti visual artist and designer who explores this within traditional Islamic and historical elements found across literature, calligraphy and local history and customs. In what ways can we activate the past within the present, and how can this call for bridging cultural and inter-generational divides? *** Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1981, Farah K. Behbehani is a Kuwaiti artist and designer. She received  a Masters of Arts in Communication Design with distinction from Central Saint Martin’s College of Art  and Design, London, in 2007. Farah published her  rst book, ‘ e Conference of the Birds’ ( ames &  Hudson, London, 2009), based on Farid Ud-Din Attar’s 12th century Su  allegorical poem. Illustrating  Attar’s poetry with Jali Diwani calligraphy, she created a design system to enable non-Arabic readers to  comprehend the meaning and  uency of the calligraphic forms, providing greater insight into the intrica cies of Arabic script. Her work aspires to shed light on her rich cultural heritage, creating a bridge between  East and West. Farah’s work focuses on the Arabic letter, continuously investigating its layered meanings and exploring the  boundaries of its physical form. Her pieces re ect her desire and passion to rediscover and employ tradition al Islamic art practice, creating reinterpretations in contemporary form. She has explored a variety of  mediums, moving from paper and canvas to weaving and beading, as well as large-scale installations in  metal and wood. Farah has had several solo exhibitions in her native Kuwait as well as participating in numerous shows  internationally, including: ‘I Love You, Urgently’, 21,39 Jeddah Art Week, Jeddah (2020); Bahrain Annual  Fine Arts Exhibition, Manama (2020); Cairo Biennale, Cairo (2019); ‘Drawing from our Culture’, ITHRA  -  e King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, Dhahran (2018); ‘Bab Jeddah’, Art Pur Gallery, Riyadh  (2016); ‘Stages of Ascent’, Contemporary Art Platform (CAP), Kuwait (2014); ‘Word and Illumination’ in  cooperation with the British Museum, Madinah Al Munawwarah (2014); ‘Pen to Paper’ Athr Gallery,  Jeddah (2013); ‘ e Future of Tradition -  e Tradition of Future’, Haus Der Kunst, Munich (2010);  ‘Arabesque: Arts of the Arab World Festival’, Kennedy Center, Washington D.C. (2009). She is represented  by Athr gallery, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. *** As part of Warehouse421 Conversations, "Whistle While You Work" is a series of discussions led by Suzy Sikorski of MidEast Art, dedicated to humanizing the artist and embracing the diverse interdisciplinary activities, thoughts, and frame of minds that have been birthed or accelerated during this time in the pandemic. Faced with a heightened sense of awareness of their emotional and technical functions during the quarantine, artists and creatives from across the GCC share their newfound ideas, paying attention to their mental and physical processes, as they channel this in 1) daily habits 2)movement/dance/play 3) fantasy/myth-making/childhood memories 4) identity (sense of place, and collective and individual consciousness). Suzy Sikorski is an art researcher in Dubai running Mid East Art, a digital storytelling platform covering modern art analysis and contemporary practices. The platform’s overarching emphasis seeks not only to contextualize the contemporary within regional modern art history, but also in bridging both Western and Middle Eastern audiences and thinking critically within global art historical discourse.
How are movement and dance be an integral part of artists’ practices? What are the variety of ways participating and capturing performance and dance makes us more human and attune to our bodies - in our gender and ethnicity? How do viewers interact with performance? How important is movement as a form of therapy in artists work? In this episode of “Whistle While You Work”, Suzy Sikorski discusses these questions and more with performance artists Marwah Almugait and Sarah Brahim. Marwah AlMugait Marwah AlMugait is a visual artist from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. She has a BA in Business Administration from King Saud University, and pursued her master degree in Photojournalism at the University of Westminster in 2012. While developing her visual perspective, Marwah tends to seek an intimate portraits of stories, presenting channels which reveal the subtle perspectives of her subjects internal realms. Marwah focuses on exposition: shedding light on things that people overlook or discard. Her work encompasses a wide variety of themes but embodies the desire to explore the gap between different ways of communicating. Through different body of works, she emphasizes the fluidity and turbulence by drawing from a wide range of technologies and a heightened sense of awareness, Marwah invites her audience to pay attention to the pauses in human interaction. Sarah Brahim Sarah Brahim is a movement artist passionate about creating meaningful work with artists of varying mediums. She grew up studying, choreographing, performing, and teaching jazz, ballet, and tap in Portland, Oregon. Studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance and in 2016 she graduated from London Contemporary Dance School (LCDS) and holds a BA Honors degree in Contemporary Dance. At LCDS she further explored the depth and resonance of movement, discovering her passion for improvisation, collaboration, choreographing, and healing through movement. Since graduating she has worked professionally performing, choreographing, and directing movement. In 2018, she was a resident at Spaceness Artist Residency, New Expressive Works 6 month choreographic residency, produced two shows premiering an original piece Dream of a Common Language, created an original performance for Portland Design Week, performed an original show with Portland Tap Company, and was artist in residence at 33 Officina Creativa in Italy. She created Coyote Collective with writer Michelle Overby, a night during which artists of different mediums pair up to collaborate and perform original work together and also performs regularly as SSL, a band composed of a drummer, dj, and tap dancer. In 2019, she has been awarded the American Dance Festival Studio Subsidy Grant and a Professional Development Grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council with which she will begin to create her first evening length work. Suzy Sikorski  Suzy Sikorski is an art researcher in Dubai running Mid East Art, a digital storytelling platform covering modern art analysis and contemporary practices. The platform’s overarching emphasis seeks not only to contextualize the contemporary within regional modern art history, but also in bridging both Western and Middle Eastern audiences and thinking critically within global art historical discourse.  In 2016-2017 Suzy received a Fulbright Scholarship to the UAE and shares her research in regional publications and institutional collaborations,  most recently in a digital programming with the UAE Embassy in Washington, DC. She is currently an Associate Specialist at Christie's in their Middle Eastern Modern & Contemporary art department.
How does daydreaming, fantasy, myth-making and childhood nostalgia impact creativity? In what ways does fantasy reinforce an understanding of our realities? How much of this impacts your artwork production? Is it a constant part of your thought process? In this episode of “Whistle While You Work”, Suzy Sikorski discusses these questions and more with artists Maitha Abdalla and Hassan Meer. Maitha Abdalla Maitha discovered her passion for arts at an early age, however it was through art and design courses in London that her understanding of art had flourished. She went on to gain a BA in visual arts from the college of arts and creative enterprises at Zayed University. As if harnessing the subconscious, Maitha Abdalla’s work oscillates between the diaphanous, vibrant and surreal, and is always marked by an atmosphere of reminiscence and nostalgia. Often evolved into series articulating strong cultural narratives, her paintings and mixed media works are assemblages of memory, travel and human interactions. Informed by exchanges and experiences, her socially driven commentaries on the human condition reveal astute, intuitive observations on the world around her, in a narrative form. Theatre is particularly influential in her work, as she further explores the difference between the imaginary and the real; mapping the liminal space between these interconnected worlds, she plays out many questions of social and cultural identity. Hassan Meer Hassan Meer was born in Muscat the capital city of the Sultanate of Oman, where he continues to live and work. He received his Masters degree in Art with Media Art specialization in 1999 from Savannah College of art and design, Georgia, USA. During his study, he started using video and installation art as a new form to express his ideas, which have been inspired by personal experience and childhood memories with an impressionable sense of spirituality. In the year 2000 he organized the Circle Show, which, is taking the lead in encouraging this new form of art in Oman and the region. Hassan is very much inspired by the changes in culture identity and he studies individual identity, community correlates in relation to a collective experience and a globalized age through his installation works and artworks. His work is also a contemplation and search into the spiritual domain and the magic rituals bequeathed to us from ancient times which, has established itself profoundly in our society. It narrates his pondering and questioning of death, the mortality of man and examines others local prevalent rituals. Our latest podcast is now out; ‘Reflections on Institutions and Critique: The Case of Mina Zayed’ delves into the Mina Zayed: Reflections on Past Futures exhibition’s institutional critique through engaging and mindful conversations. Moderated by Maryam Wissam Al Dabbagh Iraqi writer and cultural communications consultant, the podcast features Saira Ansari, Kevin Jones and Mohamed Somji, along with artists Fatema Al Fardan and Lena Kassicieh. The five guests will also discuss the role of cultural sectors in communal spaces and the diverse communities of Mina Zayed. Moderator:  Born and raised in the UAE, Maryam Wissam Al Dabbagh is an Iraqi writer, researcher, and cultural communications consultant. She received a BA in Journalism, from the American University of Sharjah, and an MA in Global Media and Postnational Communications from SOAS, London. Her research is focused on the Arab Diaspora in the Gulf, and exile, especially through the lens of belonging and return. Speakers: Saira Ansari is a researcher/writer with an interest in South Asian art history, global modernity, publishing practices and science fiction. Kevin Jones is an independent arts writer based in Dubai. New York-born and Paris-bred, he is currently the UAE Desk Editor for ArtAsiaPacific. In 2019, he founded the niche consultancy Juniper Mind, which helps brands be more like artists, and artists more like brands. Mohamed Somji is a Tanzanian national with Indian roots and has been living in Dubai for the last 40 years. Mohamed is a curator, photographer, and director of Gulf Photo Plus, a Dubai-based photography gallery and community organization. In addition to offering a wide range of photography educational and art programs, the organization hosts a week-long annual event that draws the world's preeminent talent in photography and hosts events and activities with a view to nurturing and developing photography talent in the region. In addition to artists in the exhibition: Fatema Al Fardan is a multidisciplinary artist interested in complexifying Emirati narratives. She examines her national monolithic identity through photography and performance, questioning both cultural and social homogeneity attached to Emiratis. Lena Kassicieh is a ceramicist, photographer, and mixed-media artist. Lena's work combines a multitude of emotions and experiences, and is generated through a sense of thoughtful nostalgia and melancholy, exploring visuals, moments and shapes that tell a story. Her work is multidisciplinary and experimental in its nature, including illustrations, ceramics, collages, sketchbooks, acrylic paintings and photographs.
