Description
Changing the world, one mind at a time, For What it's Worth...“For What it’s Worth” is an interview-based podcast series which focuses on exploring innovative ideas for a changing world; ideas related to people, culture, business, education, science and more. The show features well-known guests from across a variety of industries and disciplines, each presenting their views, theories, and predictions about issues related to new ways of thinking, working, and learning. From education to technology, social justice to the future of work, from politics to culture change, "For What it's Worth" explores where we are, how we got here, and whether or not we want to continue along these same paths in a post-COVID 19 world. The show will also feature “The Space [in Between]” co-hosted with Cameron Brown. “The Space” is an opinion-based exploration of a broad spectrum of cultural issues from current events, entertainment and the Arts. “The Space” is a free-flowing, non-scripted dialogue between Blake Melnick and Cameron Brown, and may appear as a stand-alone episode, or as an episode segment, you just never know... This week on #ForWhatitsWorthwithBlakeMelnick and our #ManyFacesofInnovation series, is part 2 of #EntrainmentandPowerofSound, with my guest @TomPowers. In part one, Tom explained the Theory of Entrainment and his “aha!” moment when he realized that something in music had changed post 1995.We had inadvertently lost the natural interpersonal musical entrainment, which occurs between artists and their music and their audience as a result of the mass adoption of digital technology. Tom's prior experience as a recording engineer came into play as he began to advance his hypothesis.Could we bring back entrainment using the very technology that was responsible for its demise? And in doing so, also create new possibilities and opportunities to apply what he was learning to advance knowledge in other fields of endeavour… For what it's worth.Entrainment & the Power of Sound Blog postThe music for this episode, "Bible Thumpin' Sundays" is written and performed by our current artist in residence, #DouglasCameron and the Louisiana Snowblowers. You can find out more about Douglas by visiting our show blog and by listening to our episode, #TheOldGuitarKnowledge Management Institute of Canada From those who know to those who need to knowWorkplace Innovation Network for Canada Every Graduate is Innovation-Enabled; Every Employee can Contribute to InnovationSupport the showreview us on Podchaser Show website - https://fwiw.buzzsprout.comFollow us on:Show Blog Face Book Instagram: Support usEmail us: fwiw.thepodcast@gmail.com

This week on #ForWhatItsWorthwithBlakeMelnick, the next instalment in our series, #TheManyFacesofInnovation, we focus on innovation at the organizational level. For those of you new to the series, here's a bit of a recap. #TheManyFacesofInnovation Series is designed to make innovation more understandable, accessible, and actionable to both individuals and organizations alike. In our first two episodes of the series this season, we profiled the ground-breaking research of Dr. Terry Soleas from Queens University around what motivates people to want to innovate, and conversely, why do some people struggle with it? And if we can understand this dynamic, then it's possible to design conditions that allow innovation capability to take hold, both for individuals and within organizations We're doing this through the telling of stories of innovators across multiple fields of endeavour and their innovation journey's and the lessons they've learned along the wayIn this two-part episode, we're going to hear the story of a young engineer who joined a firm in Calgary, Alberta five years ago, and has quickly become a catalyst for innovation at his firm ...For What it's WorthLink to Episode Blog PostThe music for this episode, "High Water" is written and performed by our current artist in residence, #DouglasCameron. Well, Happy New Year and welcome to this week's episode of #ForWhatIt'sWorthwithBlakeMelnick. This is part two of our episode, #UnderstandingthMotivationtoInnovate with my guest, #Dr.TerrySoleas from #QueensUniversity. Dr. Soleas's seminal research on the factors which motivate people to innovate is key to making innovation more understandable, accessible, and actionable to individuals and organizations alike. We need to resist thinking about innovation as the preserve of geniuses, and we need to avoid lionizing individuals and giving them singular attribution for large scale innovations and inventions. We need to begin to focus on the process of innovation as a collaborative knowledge building effort to address complex social challenges. In part one, Dr. Soleas and I attempted to clarify the difference between invention and innovation. We discussed his personal motivations behind his research, the desire for social justice to ensure that those who have the drive to innovate are able to do so. In part two, we explore the dimension of cost and and expectancies from and motivations for innovation, as well as the design considerations which formed the basis for his research ...for what it's worth.Link to Episode Blog PostThe music for this episode, "How Come I Gotta" is written and performed by our current artist in residence, #DouglasCameron. This week on #ForWhatItsWorthwithBlakeMelnick an episode of #TheSpaceinBetween called #LittleFeatAG.As our listeners know, we've been doing a fairly deep dive into the music of Little Feat. I had a great interview with Mr. Bill Payne, co-founder and pianist for the band, and during that interview we discussed the need to encourage new listeners to Little Feat. What came out of the interviews, both with Bill and with some of the fans on the street before their show in Seattle this past summer was Little Feat fans are a little bit stuck in the past. For many hardcore Little Feat fans, the band essentially ended with the death of Lowell George in 1979. And yet the band has continued to evolve and progress and introduce new musical stylings along with a range of new vocalists following the death of Lowell George over 40 years ago. In this episode we're going to take you on a interactive musical journey into the music of Little Feat A.G. We've created a public Spotify playlist with all the songs that we discuss in this episode. In the show information we've put chapter markers for each of the records we discuss. If you want to listen to part of the episode and then listen to a couple of songs from a particular record and then flip back again and listen to the interview, you can use the markers for each record in the show notes and get right back to where you left off.Two of the records we talk about, "Shake Me Up" and "Kick'n it at the Barn" are currently unavailable on Spotify, but we are working on another way to let you here them. Once we've got that altogether we will update the show notes, the show blog and our FB Group page with the links, so make sure you check back in a few days.Note: Not all listening channels allow for "chapters" but for sure our podcast site https://fwiw.buzzsprout.com does, as does Apple PodcastsLink to the Episode Spotify PlaylistMissing LinksLinks to songs we discussed that are not available on Spotify Bill's River Blues on Kick'n it at the BarnStomp on Kick'n it at the Barn Shake Me UpClownin'Boom Box CarLink to Blog postClick HERE to purchase a signed copy of Moments in Time by Tom LockeAnd if you like the show, please share it out , and consider making a small donation to the cause by buying us a coffee, using the Support the Show Support the showreview us on Podchaser Show website - https://fwiw.buzzsprout.comFollow us on:Show Blog Face Book Instagram: Support usEmail us: fwiw.thepodcast@gmail.com

This week on #ForWhatitsWorthwithBlakeMelnick, part 1 of #Straightfromthe Heart, my interview with the great #BillPayne, keyboardist and co-founder of #LittleFeat. I spent a lot of time listening to interviews given by Bill over the years , looking for a different angle, something that we could talk about that perhaps nobody has talked about before. One of the comments Bill made in one interview was, "We lost Lowell George, we lost Richie Hayward. We lost Paul Barrere - If we were to lose Bill Payne, Little Feat would still survive"So that begs the metaphysical question, what is or who is Little Feat? If it's not the people in the band, what is it? ... this became the focus of my conversation with Bill Payne ...For What it's WorthLink to Blog postClick HERE to purchase a signed copy of Moments in Time by Tom LockeAnd if you like the show, please share it out , and consider making a small donation to the cause by buying us a coffee, using the Support the Show link The intro music for this episode, "How Come I Gotta"" is written and performed by our current artist in residence, @DouglasCameron. This week on #TheSpaceInbetween, #AnsweringTheStones another moment in time from Tom Locke's great new book by the same nameIn the late fifties and early sixties, music fans were introduced to answer records, songs that were sometimes a parody or a sequel to established hits.A few that come to mind are Jeanie Black's, "He'll have to Stay" in 1960. The answer record to Jim Reeves smash hit of 1959, 1960, "He'll Have to Go", Jody Miller's 1965, "Queen of the House" the answer to Roger Miller's 1965 smash hit, King of the Road and Leslie Gore's, 1963, "Judy's Turn to Cry" the follow up record to her hit, "It's My Party." In most cases, these answer records usually came out a few months after the success of the records, they were emulating. One exception to this rule, however, was an answer record that took eight years before it made it on the charts. Recognized today as a core rock and roll record, it went all the way to number one.Click HERE to purchase a signed copy of Moments in Time by Tom LockeAnd if you like the show, please share it out , and consider making a small donation to the cause by buying us a coffee, using the Support the Show link or by entering the following url in your browser: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/forwhatitsworthThe music for this episode, "Queen of Queens" is written and performed by our new artist in residence, #DouglasCameron. Welcome to this week's episode of #thespaceinbetween. As we mentioned in our last episode, it's now getting time to pass the jam. For the past month or so, we’ve been playing songs from our current artist in residence, #HeatherGemmell for all the intros and outros to our episodes. Now we'll be playing all of these songs in their entirety, - and I get to play DJ. I hope you've enjoyed Heather's music as much as I have. I've loved playing her tunes on the show - they're beautifully suited to establishing the right mood for each of the episodes. Heather is a terrific talent, a multi instrument nuanced player with great vocal range and tonality. The timing for this episode is perfect. Heather is about to release her record in July containing all the tunes we've been playing plus a few more. So we'll let you know when that record is released and provide you with a link to purchase it through our Facebook show page for what it's worth the podcast series and our show blog: forwhatitsworthpodcast.com. Heather is also in the running for the CBC's Searchlight talent contest for her song. #NorthstarisBurning about the selfish act of arson that disabled the chairlift at the Kimberly Alpine resort this past winter significantly impacting the economy of the town. Here's your opportunity to really listen to her music. So kickback, sync your phone or computer to your stereo; your Bluetooth speaker, or just slap on your headphones and have a listen to #longhairedcountrygirl - The Set list...For What it's Worth. And if you like the show, please share it out to your networks, and consider making a small donation to the cause by buying us a coffee, using the Support the Show link or by entering the following url in your browser: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/forwhatitsworthThe music for this episode is written and performed by our current artist in residence, #HeatherGemmell. This week on #TheSpaceinBetween, another #MomentinTime from #TomLocke's new book by the same name. In this episode Tom pays tribute to Bubble Gum music with a 1969 hit single. According to an early 1969 article in #Cashbox Magazine, a Welsh newspaper called #MiningNews had mentioned the hard rock music of a group of coal miners who would dig by day and play rock and roll by night. The story goes that a London, England club owner rushed to Wales and descended at 18,000 feet beneath the surface to sign the group ...quite a story ...and stayed tuned at the end of the episode for a trailer for the next episode of #ForWhatitsWorthwithBlakeMelnick, called #TruthRegenerationandIndigenousWaysofKnowing ...For What it's WorthClick HERE for the blog post for this episodeClick HERE to download Music Man Part 1Click HERE to download Music Man Part 2Click HERE to purchase a signed copy of Moments in Time at a special priceWe have been featuring excerpts from Tom's book on #TheSpaceinBetween and we have been running a little music trivia contest for our listeners. In this episode, the focus of our discussion is on the book itself. He also provides some Sage advice to those who have ever entertained the idea of publishing their own book ....for what it's worth.Click HERE for the blog post for this episodeClick HERE to download Music Man Part 1Click HERE to purchase a signed copy of Moments in Time at a special price We have been featuring excerpts from Tom's book on #TheSpaceinBetween and we have been running a little music trivia contest for our listeners.
