🪶 We are so excited to share this conversation with Camie Jae Goldhammer, MSW, LICSW, IBCLC (Sisíthuŋwaŋ-Waȟpéthuŋwaŋ Oyáte) a Clinical Social Worker, Lactation Consultant and Full Spectrum Indigenous Doula.🪶 Camie is the founder and chair of the Native American Breastfeeding Coalition of Washington. She is also a founding mother and President Elect of the National Association of Professional and Peer Lactation Supporters of Color. 🪶 She is now putting all of her effort into a new non-profit called Hummingbird Indigenous Family Services of which Hummingbird Indigenous Doulas is a foundational program. She is a National leader on topics of racial equity and first food justice. Katherena, a Red River Métis (Michif) writer from Treaty 1 territory, the heart of the Métis Nation. She has worked in poetry, novels, children’s literature, and film. Her first book, North End Love Songs, also her debut novel won the Governor General's Literary Award for poetry, and her debut novel, The Break, was a finalist for the Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize and the Governor General's Literary Award for fiction. Welcome to the Motherhood Series! I am so excited to share the first episode in our new Motherhood Series where I talk with Autumn EagleSpeaker!  Autumn  is a member of the Kainai First Nation. She is from the All Short Peoples Clan and the Running Antelope Band.  Autumn was born and raised in Seattle, Washington and resides in Calgary. Autumn is the daughter of Diane EagleSpeaker and Michael Williams and is the grand daughter of the late Glen and Leona EagleSpeaker and Helen and Stanley Williams. Autumn is a Blackfoot/African American Renaissance Woman, Mother of six,Warrior, Lover of Indigeneity, Politics, Art, Books, She is a speaker, passionate volunteer and Creates events and opportunities for others.Autumn is also an entrepreneur designing her own line of jewelry Falling Leaves Designs. Autumn’s educational background at the University of Calgary focused on International Indigenous Studies and Political Science. Autumn (along with her sister Melrene) organizes the Authentically Indigenous Craft Show, a social enterprise that creates opportunity for local Indigenous artists, makers and creators through craft shows and events. Autumn is a Community leader, a Community activist organizer, and has sat on many Boards. Autumn was also one of the main organizers for Idle No More Calgary and is Autumn is also a recipient of the Canada 150 Senate Medal for her work for Outstanding Volunteerism, the Esquao Award for Community Service and the City of Calgary Youth Achievement Award (many moons ago).It is an honour to share my conversation with this amazing mama and hear all about her incredible journey! Join me in conversation with Caroline Sekaquaptewa, a 47 year old Hopi woman from Sipaulovi, Arizona. She is from the Patkiwungwa (Water) clan. Caroline is a mother of four daughters: Jaime,  Jelani, Jaya, and Makenna and grandmother to one grandson. She resides in the Phoenix area and  is an Early Childhood Educator and has taught in a family literacy program located on the Salt RIver Pima Maricopa Indian Community for 17 years. Caroline has a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, a Master’s degree in Bilingual/ Multicultural Education, and a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education. Caroline comes from the Hopi tribe, who have a strong cultural connection to running. She has been a runner since elementary school and was a part of state championship teams at Hopi High School. She ran in junior college for a brief time, and later resumed running as a Mom.Caroline comes from a physically active family. The family participates and supports each other in runs, triathlons, and basketball games. She participates in triathlons with family and friends, and has completed the Ironman Arizona race four times. Caroline is a 8 time Boston Marathon finisher and has also run the Chicago and Los Angeles marathons. Caroline has competed in races from 5K to 55K, on roads and trails, and truly enjoys the physical challenges of endurance sports. Support the show
Jillene Joseph (Aaniiih) raised four children and a nephew for many years as a single mother and now is in a beautiful and healthy relationship.  She has a Bachelor of Science degree in community health education and is currently the Executive Director for the Native Wellness Institute, a national non-profit organization that she and a handful of others founded in 2000.  For the past 35 years she has traveled throughout North America providing wellness and healing training and technical assistance to tribes, First Nations and aboriginal people and organizations in a variety of areas such as youth leadership development, healthy relationships, wellness in the workplace and more. She has visited hundreds of Native and Indigenous communities through North America, the island of Guam, Australia and New Zealand, providing information as well as furthering her own knowledge and understanding of our People and our traditional ways. She prides herself in choosing to be drug and alcohol free and by living a life that she knows is making her ancestors smile. Jillene is one of the 8 members of the International Indigenous Council of the Healing Our Spirits Worldwide movement- a worldwide effort to heal the lasting impacts of colonization around the world. Jillene has worked for her own tribe, for tribal health board’s and has always lived by her personal mantra of “Living by the Warrior’s Spirit:  being positive, productive and proactive.” Her passion and life’s work are dedicated to bringing wellness and healing to individuals, families, places of work and communities throughout Native North America and beyond! All the work that Paula does is based on the belief that Indigenous people have cultural knowledge that can drive communities ahead if we embrace who we are. We have languages, systems, teachings that can be used to create our own education systems, economic development initiatives and improve our emotional and spiritual health. Paula was blessed with a life with a husband who was able to help her see that there is so much more to life. He was lost to this physical world in an auto accident three years ago. Living in grief, Paula knows that there is still so much more work to do to carry on his legacy, work and spirit. Paula is blessed to be a single parent with four children who inspire her every day and who are also teachers of life and love.Paula holds a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education and a Master of Education. In this episode I talk with Tchadas Leo, who is from the Homalco First Nation, in Campbell River, Vancouver Island where he grew up. Tchadas Leo is the host of the podcast, Our Native Land, where he shares stories from his life, interviews guests, and shares weekly Indigenous news stories. At 12 years old Tchadas started working part time as an apprentice at Campbell River’s local TV station, where he trained as a junior production assistant.  At age 15 he was hired as an assistant producer for CRTV and later on Shaw TV. Jill Featherstone is a mother of 5 and step-mom to 3. She is a wife, a grandmother, a university instructor, and now an author. For the first half of her career, Jill taught middle school. Then in 2011 after obtaining her Master’s degree Jill went on to become a University Instructor teaching in the bachelor of education program for University College of the North in Northern Manitoba.Jill is also the founder of Featherstone Support Services, a business which provides motivational workshops for Indigenous youth and young adults. To date she has helped hundreds of Indigenous youth and young adults find the motivation, courage and confidence to go back to school and enter into the workforce.In 2013 she began writing her novel The Tale of Tiger Lily. Inspired by the character created by J.M. Barrie’s 1929 play Peter Pan. Join me in conversation with Helen Knott, super talented author of In My Own Moccasins: A Memoir of Resilience, as we reflect on her inspirational journey through writing, healing, family, and advocacy.Helen is a Dane Zaa, Cree, and mixed Euro-descent woman from Prophet River First Nations. She has her Bachelor’s in Social Work. She has worked primarily with Indigenous families that have been involved with the Ministry of Child and Family Development in the area of advocacy and wellness. Helen has facilitated provincially for a variety of age groups on different topics ranging from intergenerational trauma to using writing as a tool for social justice. She was recently appointed to the provincial Minister’s Advisory Council of Indigenous Women.  In 2016 she was one of sixteen women globally featured by the Nobel Women’s Initiative for her work to end gender-based violence.She has a variety of poetry and academic pieces published and is currently working on her second book, Becoming A Matriarch. Most importantly, Helen is a single mother to her son,  and spends most of her free time with her family. Helen is eight years sober and clean on her journey and is passionate about healing. For the second episode in the Author Series, Andrea gets to have a conversation with her dad, Gordon! In this episode you will get to hear some of Gordon's stories as he shares many memorable moments from his journey.  Gordon A. Fox is a proud member of the Blood Tribe,  where he has resided for most of his life. He is an Elder, husband, father, grandfather, Indigenous Children’s advocate, and writer. His Blackfoot name is Iipisowaahsa (Morning Star). Gordon enjoys reading and writing fictional stories about First Nations people and their traditional and contemporary lives. In his writings he brings to life colourful and picturesque characters who remind the reader of someone they know or even reminiscent of themselves. Gordon has written a monumental novel "Arvus in Excelsus", as well as a children's story, and a collection of short stories. He is currently working on a murder mystery novel set to be published in 2021. Gordon has spent over 35 years working in the field of Social Work as an advocate for Indigenous children, where his leadership has provided opportunities for the next generation of social workers to learn about providing culturally appropriate supports for Indigenous children and families. He is a graduate of Gonzaga University where he completed his Master of Counselling. In this episode we hear from Elaine Alec who is the first author to be featured in our Author Series. Read on to learn about Elaine’s background and tune in to listen to her powerful story. I am incredibly honoured to have this conversation with Elaine Alec - a strong, courageous and beautiful spirit!  Elaine Alec is from the Syilx (Okanagan) Nation and Secwepemc (Shuswap) Nation and is a member of the Penticton Indian Band in the Interior of British Columbia. She has been a political advisor, Chief of Staff for the British Columbia Assembly of First Nations, Community Planner for her own First Nation, a public servant with the Province of British Columbia and an employee with the Community Initiatives Unit for Indigenous Services Canada in the BC Region.Elaine has spent over 20 years in over 100 communities across Canada to promote healing and wellness. She is a partner of an Indigenous owned and operated planning company called Alderhill Planning Inc. who are recognized as leading experts in Indigenous community planning.Most recently Elaine led the Path Forward Women & Girls Safety Community Sessions which brought individuals together to talk about a path forward to create a plan with tangible action items and solutions for individuals, families and communities. This work was initiated as a response to the MMIWG National Inquiry’s Calls for Justice. Elaine is a first-time author of “Calling My Spirit Back” which discusses tangible steps on how to cultivate safe spaces for diversity and inclusion. Desiree Morrisseau Keesick is anishinaabe, born and raised in Winnipeg’s North End with maternal ties to Crane River, MB and paternal ties to Grassy Narrows First Nation. Shelby is anishinaabe and Belgian/french Canadian also born in Winnipeg with paternal ties to Sagkeeng First Nation. They’ve been together for three and a half years and share a home with their two fur babies, Mr Kitty and Boots. This episode introduces us to the love birds behind Diary of Two Teachers, India and William Garcia-Morel. They take us through their journey as best friends and share their wisdom in parenting, as well as  the everyday stuff that makes their union beautiful and unique.  India has been a K-6 public school teacher for the past 10 years, and Will is in his 4th year teaching high school English. They are a blended family of 6, with two girls and two boys. India is a Lumbee from Lumberton, NC and Will is Puerto Rican/Honduran from the New Orleans Metropolitan area.
