Feed the dog! Changing your pitch patterns can help your listeners understand your emotions and meaning. In this week's This Is A Voice podcast (Season 6 Episode 12), expert vocal trainers Dr Gillyanne Kayes & Jeremy Fisher use the sentence "Feed the dog" to showcase different pitch patterns and meanings. We read out the instructions from the second half of exercise 26 (page 84 of This Is A Voice) and show you step by step how to change meaning, intonation and interest in your speaking voice. Jeremy reads out a paragraph of text with two very different pitch patterns (it's almost like singing), and Gillyanne shares a very simple exercise to help non-singers process their own spoken voice pitch patterns.  Jeremy also demonstrates two different pitch patterns that can become irritating if repeated - the upward inflection and the creak down. There's a BRILLIANT exercise borrowed from UCL's phonetics department for speaking voice inflection that's very close to science fiction, and Jeremy demonstrates all four versions of the exercise to create four different emotional states.(You can go to the free preview of our Pitch, Pace & Power webinar where we explore this more here https://vocal-process-hub.teachable.com/courses/the-vocal-technique-learning-lounge/lectures/27906956) Get the This Is A Voice book here https://amzn.to/3A9steN Get the One Minute Voice Warmup app here, it's got a 4.9star rating Appstore https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/one-minute-voice-warmup/id1212802251 Google Play https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.speechtools.warmup&hl=en_GB&pli=1 Sam and Garry at Speechtools are here https://speechtools.co/ We've also got this! ↓ The 5 Days to Better Singing Teaching course online, with voice coaching techniques, vocal articulation exercises and a LOT more for the up-to-date singing teacher is here https://vocal-process-hub.teachable.com/p/5-days-to-better-singing-teaching For the best self-guided learning check out the Vocal Process Learning Lounge - 16 years of vocal coaching resources (over 600 videos) for less than the price of one private singing lesson. No? Yes!What makes a voice more interesting to listen to? Tone? Volume?Pitch patterns help your listeners understand your emotions and meaning. In this episode, expert vocal trainers Dr Gillyanne Kayes and Jeremy Fisher riff on pitch patterns and meaning in speaking voice.Exercise 26 on page 84 of our This Is A Voice book is a brilliant vocal technique exercise for improving your speaking (and singing). We go step by step through the instructions and demonstrate how the exercise works in both male and female voice.Jeremy demonstrates monotonous voice, a very boring version of the test sentences. And both Gillyanne and Jeremy speak with extreme pitch changes, giving a totally different meaning to the same words. And we walk you through a pitching exercise in our One Minute Voice Warmup app too. It's a cracking episode, one of our best so far.If you want to discover how to increase your speaking range, improve your voice use and get your listeners more interested in what you're saying, tune in to this episode!Get the This Is A Voice book here https://amzn.to/3A9steNGet the One Minute Voice Warmup app here, it's got a 4.9star ratingAppstore https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/one-minute-voice-warmup/id1212802251Google Play https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.speechtools.warmup&hl=en_GB&pli=1Sam and Garry at Speechtools are here https://speechtools.co/Anne Leatherland of Vocal Intuition is here https://anneleatherland.co.uk/Susie Millen of MyVocalFitness is here https://www.myvocalfitness.com/We've also got this! ↓The 5 Days to Better Singing Teaching course online, with voice coaching techniques, vocal articulation exercises and a LOT more for the up-to-date singing teacher is here https://vocal-process-hub.teachable.com/p/5-days-to-better-singing-teachingFor the best self-guided learning check out the Vocal Process Learning Lounge - 16 years of vocal coaching resources (over 600 videos) for less than the price of one private singing lesson. What does a movie musical vocal coach do? Singer and pedagogue Irene Bartlett is back to chat with vocal trainers Gillyanne & Jeremy about coaching Austin Butler to sing Elvis in the latest movie, and how she works with singing teachers in the Pedagogy Programme at Griffith University in Brisbane. What was the first thing Irene needed to do when meeting Austin (or any singer) for the first time? (3.00)What is she listening for when working with professional singers? (6.53)How do we know whether a singer has real tension or whether they're adding it "for effect"? (12.00)How do you teach singing teachers to become BETTER singing teachers? We're all in agreement, but on what? Jeremy clarifies (22.40)Why might "the 5 note scale" be a problematic exercise for singers? (24.00 and 25.40)It’s an honest conversation between vocal trainers separated by 10,000 miles but together in spirit.Baz Luhrmann's film Elvis with Austin Butler is here https://amzn.to/3E2pWFA Liz Lerman's Critical Response Process book is here https://amzn.to/3t4Jti8 The 5 Days to Better Singing Teaching course online, with voice coaching techniques, vocal articulation exercises and a LOT more for the up-to-date singing teacher is here https://vocal-process-hub.teachable.com/p/5-days-to-better-singing-teaching For the best self-guided learning check out the Vocal Process Learning Lounge - 16 years of vocal coaching resources (over 600 videos) for less than the price of one private singing lesson. What is good singing? Singer and pedagogue Dr Irene Bartlett joins vocal trainers Gillyanne & Jeremy to talk about good singing, function and style. It’s an honest conversation between vocal trainers separated by 10,000 miles but together in spirit. Is it divisive to separate classical, CCM and Musical Theatre music? Irene has a great one-sentence answer to this (2.40)Is there a difference between classical singing lessons and musical theatre singing lessons? How do classical singers react to their first heavy metal, or newbies react to their first opera? It’s a fascinating part of the conversation about vocal technique, sound output, performing environment and genre. What happens when you look at a spectrogram of a classical versus a contemporary singer? (5.36 onwards)What do a lot of acoustically trained singers get wrong about working with a mic? (8.10)And what does Irene do first in a singing lesson (that Gillyanne and Jeremy applaud her for)? (10.30)Which “standard” MT vocal technique does Gillyanne think needs a flight correction? (11.19)And why does Jeremy think your “vocal look” isn’t relevant in Musical Theatre but is relevant in CCM?
