Diera Mendez, minister and counselor at America’s KESWICK (a faith-based addiction recovery program) shares her recovery journey.Growing up with a father who struggled with drugs and alcohol misuse, Diera turned to drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism as a teenager. In her early twenties, Mendez was invited to church and her life changed. She heard a message of hope and found her calling. Currently, she ministers at America’s KESWICK, a faith-based addiction recovery program. She works as a one-on-one mentor to women whose partners are struggling with substance abuse and is committed to living her life in faith and sharing a message of hope to others. Support the show

Nikki Tierney shares how her experience with addiction and recovery prompted her to be a counselor.Nikki Tierney did not have the “typical” upbringing of a person who struggled with addiction. She came from a loving home and was always a stellar student and a star athlete. Her athletic and academic abilities landed her a full scholarship to high school and later to law school.However, as a teen, Tierney began experimenting with alcohol and cocaine. By the time she graduated high school, she was arrested three times. In 2007, Tierney hit a breaking point and knew she had to find a way to turn her life around. Learn how she found the strength to succeed in her recovery and is now committed to breaking the stigma surrounding substance use disorder by listening to her transformative story. Support the show
Allison O’Brien and her husband were faced with an extremely difficult situation when their youngest daughter became addicted to alcohol in her late 20’s.After a few unsuccessful attempts at rehab, she reverted to her old ways. Allison and her husband would receive phone calls from the ER saying their daughter may not make it – it was their worst nightmare.Eventually, the O’Brien’s learned about HOPE Sheds Light through their church. They began going to support group sessions and started seeing a therapist. The nonprofit helped them find the strength they needed, as well as navigate the situation with their daughter in a way that would not enable her behavior.Helping guide their daughter to recovery was a long and difficult journey. Allison turned to faith and is grateful for the support of family and friends during that time.Support the show

Katie Hueth shares how a deep-rooted desire to support individuals struggling with substance use disorder helped inspire her current career path.In her adolescent years, Katie witnessed those around her battle substance use disorder.A global addiction endemic seemed to surround her, and the people she loved came to her for support during their most pivotal moments.After realizing she had both the ability and desire to comfort those dealing with substance use disorder, she decided to pursue a psychology degree and develop the proper skillset to help those suffering from addictive disorders and abusive relationships.Today, Katie is the Prevention Education Coordinator at Ocean County College where she counsels and aids students in the prevention of substance use disorder, suicide and domestic/sexual violence. She also works to address the stigma surrounding recovery while implementing prevention education on campus.Katie is dedicated to helping others transform their lives for the better. And, with each new day, Katie’s story continues to inspire us – and we are sure it will inspire you. Support the show
