In today's episode I speak with Meagan Gallmore with is an independant reporter who wrote an article Young People with disabilities in long term care
Article:
https://broadview.org/young-people-with-disabilities-long-term-care/
BIO:
Meagan Gillmore has worked as a journalist for outlets across Canada, including in the Yukon and New Brunswick. She started working with AMI-audio in 2016 and is currently an accessibility reporter for NOW with Dave Brown.
Meagan’s writing has appeared in various outlets, including the CBC, Toronto Star, TVO.org and The Walrus. Her Walrus essay, “The author who shaped the way we represent disability”—about the late children’s author Jean Little—was nominated for a Digital Publishing Award in 2021 and read by Meagan on Voices of The Walrus.
Meagan was born in London, Ont., and grew up in Brantford, where she earned a degree in English and journalism from Wilfrid Laurier University. She also has a certificate in publishing from Centennial College. She’s pursuing a Master’s degree in journalism from Carleton University in Ottawa. She is a passionate lover of books, country music, chocolate and peanut butter combinations, podcasts, the Toronto Blue Jays, and puppies, among more serious pursuits.
Meagan is continually amazed by all the people she meets as a result of her visual impairment (and perhaps because her love of travel is combined with a poor sense of direction). She believes disability can lead us to better and deeper relationships. Each month on Connecting Disability she asks others about how their disability has expanded their connections with others, themselves and society.

In this eposide I speak with Moira Welsh the author of Happily Ever Older and an investigative reporter with the Toronro Star.
Reporter Moira Welsh has spent years investigating retirement homes and long-term care facilities and wants to tell the dangerous stories. Not the accounts of falls or bedsores or overmedication, but of seniors living with purpose and energy and love. Stories that could change the status quo.
Welsh takes readers across North America and into Europe on a whirlwind tour of facilities with novel approaches to community living, including a day program in a fake town out of the 1950s, a residence where seniors school their student roommates in beer pong, and an aging-in-place community in a forest where everyone seems to have a pet or a garden or both. The COVID-19 pandemic cruelly showed us that social isolation is debilitating, and Welsh tells stories of elders living with friendship, new and old, in their later years.
Happily Ever Older is a warm, inspiring blueprint for change, proof that instead of warehousing seniors, we can create a future with strong social connections and a reason to go on living.

The LTC Chronicles Podcast - 1 Year Later - Thank you by The LTC Chronicles Podcast
In this episode I will be speaking Helen Cooper (President) Elaine Watier (Resident of Oasis) about the Oasis.
Oasis is a senior-driven model of aging in place, located in naturally occurring retirement communities (NORCs)
The Oasis Senior Supportive Living Inc. program is designed to strengthen and sustain healthy communities of older adults by addressing important determinants of healthy aging such as isolation, nutrition, physical fitness, and sense of purpose. It was developed as an innovative solution to support aging well at home. Oasis is founded to serve older adults who, with some support, are able to live independently. It is a concept that recognizes the importance of self-determination and offers programs based on the identified needs and wishes of Oasis members. Oasis seeks to enable seniors to remain at home and age with dignity.

On the podcast today we are speaking with Joseph Jongsma one of the owners of Caring Support.
The Caring Support Platform is the brainchild of a handful of individuals who believed that they could help the healthcare system by providing a platform that matches caregivers (including PSWs, RNs, RPNs, and volunteers) to healthcare organizations.
The idea began as a simple job matching site to help take the stress out of finding a new job. During the COVID-19 outbreak, the need for caregivers by healthcare organizations became very public and clear that something needed to be done. This hit some of the Caring Support team members close to home and they realized that this was the perfect time to create a helping hand.

Discussion with Vincent Pierce the founder of Nursing Homes Lives Matter that was created during the pandemic.
NHLM founder Vincent Pierce is a father, music producer, youth educator, gun violence survivor and OPEN DOORS Reality Poet. He is also a nursing home resident. In July 2020, encouraged by the groundswell of demonstrations in support for Black lives, Vince launched #NursingHomeLivesMatter in response to the COVID-19 crisis and its devastating impact on the primarily Black and Brown residents of Coler Rehabilitation & Nursing Care Center on Roosevelt Island in New York City.
“During the height of the pandemic, we were left in the dark as hundreds of Covid patients were moved into our home; the infected were left in bedrooms with the uninfected; quadriplegic residents were kept in bed for days, at risk of pressure sores becoming fatal; Coler’s administration lied about dire PPE and staffing shortages and grossly underreported the number of deaths. For months, we have been cut off from family and friends and are only allowed outdoors for a few hours a day in an area defined by police tape.”
Our movement seeks to protect nursing home residents and workers who have been systematically disempowered and put in harm’s way by public officials and health care administrators.
