Today we’re talking about Culture. Culture is the unseen competitive advantage that sets winning teams and organisations apart. But one of the most overlooked aspects of organisational culture is in our language and in the stories we tell. Ginger Hardage is former senior vice president of culture and communication for southwest airlines and she believes that the stories we tell are crucial in building the culture we want. Ginger retired after an illustrious 25 years, where she served as a member of the CEO’s executive leadership team. At Southwest, Ginger led a team of 150 people responsible for building and sustaining the organisation’s legendary culture and communications enterprise. During her tenure, she played a crucial role in developing and maintaining Southwest's culture, leading to the company's numerous recognitions on FORTUNE’s “Most Admired Companies in the World” list appearing for 23 consecutive years and included on Glassdoor's Best Places to Work List in 2022 for the 13th consecutive year. Throughout her career, Ginger received numerous accolades, including induction into the Public Relations Hall of Fame and being named as one of Texas’ Most Powerful and Influential Women. She was also recognised by PRWeek multiple times in its Top 50 Power list and 50 Most Powerful Women in Public Relations.   Connect With Ginger Connect with Ginger on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/gingerhardage/ Learn all about Unstoppable Cultures with Gingers website https://unstoppablecultures.com/   Connect With Shane Connect with me on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/shanemhatton/ Learn more about what I do and sign up for my newsletter at https://www.shanemhatton.com Follow me on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/shanemhatton Follow me on Twitter at https://www.twitter.com/shanemhatton Reach out and email me at contact@shanemhatton.com
We’re having a conversation about Mental Health. There was once the belief that there is our personal life and our work life and never the two shall meet. What we know is that the line between personal and work is more intertwined than ever before. And as a leader the solution is never to tell people to leave their issues at home or to harden up. But as leaders, it can feel hard to know what to do when people on our team need some extra support. Accredited clinical psychotherapist Mark Butler believes that prevention is better than reaction. Mark has 25 years corporate experience and 15 years’ clinical experience in the field with a focus on workplace burnout, stress, anxiety and related unhealthy coping behaviours. From his work as a Clinical Director, developing programs for the most deeply affected populations, Mark completely understands burnout and executive exhaustion. He sees the need to shift from being the ‘ambulance at the bottom of the cliff’ to being the ‘fence at the top of the cliff’ – working with organisations to be proactive in preventing issues from becoming problems. Mark’s knowledge and experience has underpinned his drive and passion for pursuing effective recovery and resilience programs to get employees back on track and performing at their optimum level. His practice is built around belonging and our primal, human need to feel safe.   Get Help (For your or a friend) Lifeline: Call 13 11 14 to talk with or visit lifeline.org.au Beyond Blue: Call 1300 22 4636 to talk with or visit beyondblue.org.au   Connect With Mark Get UP YOURS! We’re having a conversation about Inclusion. When it comes to inclusion at work we can all agree that diversity, equity and inclusion matters. This is something few people would debate. But while there have been countless studies that show the importance of creating inclusive workplaces. The current evidence also shows us that much of the effort and investment we make in diversity programs on average doesn’t have as much impact as we would like to see and at times can even have a negative impact. Today we're talking all about writing One of the best practices a leader can develop is the practice of writing. Not just personal and self-reflective writing, like a journal, but long-form writing that captures your thinking, ideas, expertise, experiences and stories. Expert book coach Kelly Irving believes that writing a book is much more than the outcome of holding a book in your hands, but a process of capturing your ideas and stories and becoming someone in the process. Kelly is creating a new breed of authors. Her approach to book coaching was born out of a starry-eyed innocence. She wasn't programmed by years working in a stuffy publishing agency, nobody handed her the 'rule book', and she missed the memo that business books had to be boring. Her 'Write Book Method' is for the originals, creatives and renaissance spirits who are brave enough to share new solutions, offer new insights, and reframe ideas around the most pressing issues of our lives. It's a framework for business strategy and reader transformation to beautifully co-exist. In her words, your community is waiting to be ignited by your body of work. You owe it to them to share it with authenticity, courage, and integrity. Glen James is a former financial advisor with experience helping countless people get on top of their finances. He's also the host of the My Millennial Money Podcast. Selena is a data storyteller who is passionate about helping others sort through the numbers to tell the real stories and lead positive change. Today on the podcast we’re talking all about digital wellbeing. It takes a lot to wake up in the morning and not immediately check your phone. Or to go to sleep without those last few scrolls of social media. Unfortunately digital isn’t going anywhere so the answer can’t just be to ignore it. So we need to learn how to establish good digital boundaries, and take back control of our attention. Dr. Kristy Goodwin, an award-winning researcher and speaker, promotes employee wellbeing and productivity in a digital world. Her book, Dear Digital, We Need to Talk, offers realistic, research-based micro habits to tame digital habits. As one of Australia’s digital wellbeing and productivity experts, she shares practical brain-based hacks to tame tech habits and the latest evidence-based strategies to decode the neurobiology of peak performance in the technological era. We’re having a conversation about a culture of high performance. When you think of the phrase ‘high-performance culture’ you might think of a leader that beats their team into submission, that is all results-focused and pushes people to burnout. But my guest today, Jimmy Burroughes is on a mission to change that perception and the way we lead teams. He believes that it’s possible to build high-performance cultures that deliver profits, engage staff, and actually prevent burnout.  With years of experience as an Officer in the British Military and a track record of success as a people leader in top global organisations, Jimmy knows what it takes to build a high-performance culture that delivers results. But it’s not what you might think. He realised that traditional approaches to leadership and high-performance team programs were leaving leaders and teams burned out, disengaged, and underperforming. That's why Jimmy and his team of experts from diverse industries have developed a proven approach to building high-performance cultures that helps people thrive and be at their best. Based on years of research and hands-on experience, this helps leaders who want to achieve their full potential without giving up their weekends or sacrificing the well-being of their teams. Today on the podcast we’re talking all about growth. Whether you’re in a business or running a business, leaders are passionate about growth. That could be personal or it could be commercial. But here’s the thing, if you want sustained growth you need to start with the right foundations. There are some things you need to know to make sure you take control of that growth. My guest is Jenny Stilwell, author of the newly released book ‘The 7% Club’. Research tells us that only 7% of businesses in Australia break through the $2M turnover barrier and Jenny is all about helping lift that number. Jenny works regularly with CEO’s and teams to help them overcome the roadblocks that stand in the way of growth. Her philosophy is that a business should be an enabler of a better life, rather than something that tethers you to it. Whether you are a business owner or an individual leader, the principles Jenny talks about are powerful foundations for business or leadership growth and impact. We’re talking about how to be less shit on camera. If you’re like most people, you probably don’t have any big issues holding a conversation with another person. But if that other person is holding a camera up to your face, then maybe it’s not so easy. With the rise in AI platforms transforming the way we deliver written messaging, video is how we build trust, increase visibility and connect in a truly human way. But to do that, we have to learn how to get better at how we show up on camera. And here to talk about that is Cam Fink. If a bunch of people are happy together, Cam would like to be there. If they’re talking about interesting things and getting excited, even better. If they need help being happy and excited, Cam would DEFINITELY like to be there. He also likes helping people bring out their best selves on camera. Drawing on decades behind the camera - and a pandemic in front of it - Cam knows exactly how to bring out your best when showing up on video. We’re having a conversation about assumptions. As humans, we often make assumptions about people from a distance, and these assumptions can be far from reality. However, when you find yourself in a position of leadership or in the public spotlight, where many assumptions are made about you, how do you ensure that you don't start believing everything that's said? How do you break free from self-limiting beliefs and live a truly unbounded life? My guest is Maria Thattil, author of 'Unbounded' whose story can show us what it means to shake off assumptions, live true to who you are and make the world a better place through your influence and platform. Maria is a multi-talented personality in Australia. She is Miss Universe Australia 2020, a published author, TV presenter, actor, speaker, activist, and creator. Maria's writing has been featured in various outlets such as 9Honey, Stellar Magazine, Buzzfeed, Body+Soul, Mamamia, and Women's Agenda. She has also worked with top brands such as Olay, Alfa Romeo, Clinique, Piper Heidsieck, and L'Oréal Paris. Her book, Unbounded, guides readers on self-mastery by exploring the complexities of race, sexuality, gender, and identity. She has made waves internationally after coming out as bisexual on-air during her appearance on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! in 2022. Maria is a campaigner for diversity, inclusion, LGBTQIA+ rights, mental health, and gender equality. She is a guest Host on Channel 10's The Project and a current panelist on Channel 9's Today Extra and Talking Honey. In 2023, she is set to release her own show and make her acting debut. We're having a conversation about team tension.   My guest is my good friend and founder of Boldside consulting Shelley Johnson. When it comes to tension in a team Shell believes that the best teams don’t resolve tension, bur rather that they learn how to harness it. Today I give her a call to talk about how to do just that.   Shelley is the Boldside founder and HR Consultant you'll want by your side.   Shell has led Human Resources teams for over a decade, coaching managers to become leaders people want to follow, build teams people never want to leave, and develop a culture that has people talking — and applying. You'll find Shell's work featured in many major publications around Australia.   And when she's not doing that, you'll find her behind the microphone on the My Millennial Career podcast — an Australian Podcast Awards finalist — where she's helped thousands of people build a career they love via the airwaves.   Sher's highly qualified in the important (but boring) stuff, with a Master of Human Resource Management, and Graduate Certificate in Organisational Development under her belt.   Connect With Shelley Connect with Shelly on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/shelley-johnson/ You can hear Shell's whip-smart advice, cackling laugh and work rants here: https://www.mymillennial.money/my-career Learn more about Boldside at https://www.boldside.com.au/   Connect With Shane Connect with me on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/shanemhatton/ Learn more about what I do and sign up for my newsletter at https://www.shanemhatton.com Follow me on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/shanemhatton  Follow me on Twitter at https://www.twitter.com/shanemhatton  Reach out and email me at contact@shanemhatton.com
Today on the podcast we're talking about living more deliberately.   My guest is David Frizzell, the host of Team Guru podcast. Having been a guest a couple of times on his podcast it is so great to have David sitting in the guest seat on this episode. With over 200 interviews under his belt on that podcast alone I wanted to know if there was anything that connected the interviews he has conducted. His response was that every episode could be connected through this theme of living more deliberately. I give him a call to explore what he's learned and just how we can live life with a little bit more intention.   David Frizzell is a team, leadership, communication and change consultant. He has worked with a bunch of different organisations, across a range of industries. David is the host of The Team Guru Podcast. Since 2015, the podcast has grown from a couple of hundred listeners to more than 20 thousand per episode. David pretends that he does the podcast for the sake of his listeners - but really he does it to quench his own, selfish thirst for new ideas. The work he has done developing leaders and advising on change across large programs - from state government to multinationals - together with the ideas he steals from his podcast guests, has turned David into an opinionated bore. In September 2019 David swam the English Channel. He will tell anyone, in detail, all about it. Even if they don’t look interested. David lives in Brisbane with his wife and 3 children. We're talking about the DNA of performance.   Can a line in an email get your heart rate rising? Do you find it a little harder to get started in the morning? Turns out Alessandra will know just by looking at your DNA.     True high performance isn't shouty and showy. It is deep and solid. It is steeped in self-restraint and self-leadership. It is contingent upon attaining the highest level of self-knowledge while embracing the highest level of self-acceptance; it fuses self-esteem with self-forgiveness; and above all, it embodies limitless self-love whilst also practising the highest degree of self-intolerance.   Alessandra Edwards is a mentor, trainer and author on the DNA of Performance, the science of how our genes can be unlocked for unstoppable vitality and resilience. She has more than 15 years’ experience working at the cutting edge of DNA-based performance and wellbeing programs for senior leaders, business owners and their teams.   Her client portfolio includes senior executives from ANZ, Coles, DXC Technology, NAB, Shell and AustCyber.   Alessandra is the co-author of Brace for Impact and a contributing writer to What the Hell Do We Do Now?, which became Amazon's #one best-seller in the business category earlier last year. Today on the podcast we're talking about creativity.   Many people think that creativity is reserved for a few brilliant people. My guest on the podcast today is author Tim Duggan and he says that everyone is creative, and in his words "stuff anyone who says otherwise!"   At the time of recording Tim was in a small island in the Greek Islands and we took some time to have a chat all about creativity and the future of work.   Tim is an author and new media entrepreneur. He has co-founded several digital media ventures, most notably Junkee Media, one of the leading publishers for Australian millennials that was acquired by ASX-listed oOh!media. Under his leadership, Junkee’s content agency ran the social media accounts for leading brands like Netflix, ANZ, American Express, Westpac and more. Tim’s first book, Cult Status: How to Build a Business People Adore, was named the Best Entrepreneurship Book at the 2021 Australian Business Book Awards. We're talking about neurodiversity.   This is an episode I know you are going to love because I am joined by my good friend Callum McKirdy to talk all about harnessing our collective difference. He believes that we spend too much time trying to be the same and converge in our work teams, yet our point-of-difference is in where we diverge. Today I call him to explore some of his journey and what we can be doing to leverage the essence of each person in order to harness our collective differences.   Callum McKirdy is a speaker, author, mentor and facilitator specialising in workplace dynamics and behaviour. Over a 22-year career in and around the HR profession across Australasia, he assists leaders and teams to develop radically authentic workplaces by leveraging their uniqueness. Proudly dyslexic and ADHD-positive, Callum champions organisations to think differently about different thinking, and views the neurodivergent staff in every workplace as the innovative super workforce of the future.   Connect With Callum Follow Callum on LinkedIn at linkedin.com/in/callummckirdynz/ Learn more about Callum at https://www.callummckirdy.com/ Follow Callum's on Instagram: instagram.com/callummckirdynz/ Listen to Callum's Podcast You, Me & ADHD: https://www.callummckirdy.com/podcast   Connect With Shane Connect with me on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/shanemhatton/ Learn more about what I do and sign up for my newsletter at https://www.shanemhatton.com Follow me on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/shanemhatton  Follow me on Twitter at https://www.twitter.com/shanemhatton  Reach out and email me at contact@shanemhatton.com
Today on the podcast we're talking about adaptability.   After a couple of huge years of disruption you might be finding yourself feeling a little worn down from all the change. Well this podcast episode is good news for you. My guest is Dr Rebecca Sutherns who told me that it's possible for adaptability to be something that can energise rather than deplete us, and that it is a skill that any one of us can learn. Today I give her a call to chat all about how we can strengthen that muscle personally and also develop it in those we lead.   In all my travels over the years I am yet to meet a Canadian that isn't one of the kindest humans I've met. And today's guest, Dr Rebeccea Sutherns is no exception.  Rebecca is an insightful and high energy collaborative strategist and world class facilitator who has served as a trusted advisor to hundreds of mission-driven organisations, across Canada and internationally. Rebecca brings intellect, enthusiasm and varied experience in strategy development and adaptability when speaking, writing and mentoring. She is a skilled communicator, with a particular gift for helping leaders make wiser decisions faster. Rebecca is a Certified Professional Facilitator, frequent keynote speaker, and author of the books Nimble: Off Script but Still On Track - A coaching guide for responsive facilitation and Sightline: Strategic plans that gather momentum not dust.   Connect With Rebecca Follow Rebecca on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebeccasutherns Follow along with Rebecca's Twitter: https://twitter.com/RebeccaSutherns Learn more about Rebecca at https://rebeccasutherns.com/ Read Recbecca's Blog here https://rebeccasutherns.com/thoughts/ Find out more about Rebecca's books at https://rebeccasutherns.com/books/   Connect With Shane Connect with me on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/shanemhatton/ Learn more about what I do and sign up for my newsletter at https://www.shanemhatton.com Follow me on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/shanemhatton  Follow me on Twitter at https://www.twitter.com/shanemhatton  Reach out and email me at contact@shanemhatton.com
We're talking about pioneering.   The status quo is far from the life we were created to live. That's what today's guest Cam Greenwood believes and is here to talk all about. Cam is a remarkable young entrepreneur that I have had the privilege of knowing for the last 6 or so years. I've watched him navigate the highs and lows of business and admire him as someone who refuses to give up when he gets knocked down. That grit and determination to keep walking the unconventional path has resulted in great success for his business Zorali which he has built alongside his wife Elise. Zorali is an Australian outdoor brand that's on a mission to get the world outside and today we're going to take a look behind the scenes of the journey.   Cam Greenwood is the co-founder (alongside his wife, Elise) and chief pioneer of Zorali. Cam’s adventurous spirit has attracted an abundance of attention and he is recognised as one of Australia's most creative entrepreneurs under the age of 30 - being featured on Smart Company's ‘Smart 30 Under 30’ list.   His passion for encouraging people to expand their thinking has also led him to share his unique view of the world across Australia & beyond on many different stages and forums.   For Cam, life is an adventure. An invisible path even more exhilarating than the most breathtaking of hikes. And as long as there are more corners to explore, Cam will keep seeking what's around the next one.   Ultimately, Cam’s goal is to inspire people to believe that all things are possible when you actively engage in a life driven more strongly by curiosity than by fear.   Connect With Cam Follow Cam and Zorali on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/camgreenwood/ and https://www.instagram.com/zorali/ Learn more about Zorali at https://www.zorali.com/ Join the Zorali Outdoor Club Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/zorali   Connect With Shane Connect with me on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/shanemhatton/ Learn more about what I do and sign up for my newsletter at https://www.shanemhatton.com Follow me on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/shanemhatton  Follow me on Twitter at https://www.twitter.com/shanemhatton  Reach out and email me at contact@shanemhatton.com
