Description

Welcome to This Is Not Happening: a podcast that brings you a brand new album - and fresh new tracks - every month, with four massive music fans that have been talking and blogging about their favourite records for the last ten years together. An exiled Londoner in the North (Guy), a Leeds scriptwriter (David), ex-housemates in Leeds Joey and Nolan whose paths all crossed through music, be it festivals, DJing, gigs, or just sitting at home listening to entire albums without talking. Music is the bedrock of our friendship. The podcast name nods to our one nailed-on shared love: LCD Soundsystem, but our tastes are wide, sometimes odd, and often not the same! From bass to balearic, disco to dub, house to hip-hop, folk to funk, pop to punk, and rock to r'n'b, we'll all have music to champion, ready to be blessed or butchered by each other. Each episode we'll be talking freely about our album of the month, and what we've been listening to lately. The conversation twists and turns, and while we are serious about music, it's not so much that we can't enjoy ourselves talking about it, in fact it's why we do it. For everything we've loved in the past years, check out www.thisisnothappening.net, which will run alongside the podcast choices and much, much more. So why not join us for the conversation. It will always be lively....

Welcome to Season 2 of This Is Not Happening, an Album of the Month podcast from four of us: Guy, Joey, Nolan and David. We choose an album: we digest it, we praise it, we question it. And we bring tracks to the table. Every month. And you get to listen. Think of this as a highlights package.  A year into it, we've been lucky enough to cover some amazing albums, right from the start. From RTJ to Arlo Parks, Genesis Owusu to Sault, and the Weather Station to Jessie Ware. Rounding it off are Yves Tumor, Paul McCartney, Bicep, St Vincent and Sufjan Stevens. We've also covered a review of 2020 in ep6.  We've loved every minute so thanks to everyone that's listened so far. We hope the next year will be just as enjoyable. We've got Skyzoo lined up next before the end of July and after that, Japanese Breakfast. After that? Who knows? That's the fun.  For all the albums of the month and all our new tracks, playlists, and chat from the past decade or more head to our blog at www.thisisnothappening.net, which runs alongside the podcast choices and much, much more. Episode 12 of This Is Not Happening strides from Genesis Owusu's Smiling With No Teeth to the much-anticipated new album from St Vincent: Daddy's Home. The New York art-rock darling has embraced the underbelly of the 1970s with a new persona and some eye-catching tracks. Megafan David tries to convince us why we should all love it. It's definitely a tug of war for an album that's found reactions at both extremes. We also put together a playlist of music that makes us lean to Annie Clark. In the second half of the episode, we set the seemingly impossible task of convincing each other to like a song from artists that they hate. What were we thinking?! Our longlist is here, see what we thought of the picks:David via Joey – Manic Street Preachers – You’re Tender And You’re TiredGuy  via Nolan – The Weeknd – High For This Nolan via David - Muse – Falling DownJoey via Guy – Arcade Fire – InterventionJune's album of the month and all our new tracks, playlists, and chat from the past decade or more can be found on our blog at www.thisisnothappening.net, which runs alongside the podcast choices and much, much more. Episode 11 of This Is Not Happening departs from the ethereal Weather Station to a debut album of rare and mighty impact from Genesis Owusu. Smiling With No Teeth comes from an Australian-Ghanaian whose melting-pot influences have created one of the most fascinating and memorable albums of the year for an artist capturing lived experience in the starkest and brutally honest way. Guy's at the controls to sing about it from the rooftops. We also went big on music that the album inspired us to dive into. In the second half of the show, we tasked ourselves with finding a hidden gem we should already know. So much fun to do this, with a longlist here. The four we chose are:David - Syreeta - Harmour LoveJoey - The Cars - A Dream Away Guy - Herbie Hancock - The Twilight CloneNolan - Them Two - Am I A Good ManMay's album of the month and all our playlists, new music and discussions from the past decade or more can be found on our blog at www.thisisnothappening.net, which runs alongside the podcast choices and much, much more. Episode #12 closes out our first year with David going mega-fan on St Vincent's new album Daddy's Home. The latest from the vaunted singer, guitarist and avant-garde musical shapeshifter will be coming to you before the end of May.This Is Not Happening:Created by Joey, Nolan, Guy and David.Produced and Edited by Guy and Nolan.Twitter: @thisisnothapngInstagram: @thisisnothappeningpodEmail: thisisnothappeningpodcast@gmail.comReviews: www.ratethispodcast.com/thisisnothappening
Episode 10 of This Is Not Happening finds us sticking with female artists but switching from the UK to Canada with the Weather Station's Ignorance.  Tamara Lindeman's group released its 5th album in 2021, and it marks another progression from folk-tinged songwriting to full-blown grown-up pop that touched on so many of our big influences. We all went on a journey with this, with Joey at the helm. We also put together an 'inspired by' playlist to sit with the album.  In the second part of the show, we jumped off the deep end by picking a new track, secret santa-style for each other! Here's the longlist, but the four we chose are:David - Nolan chose: Brother Ali - Sensitive. Guy - Joey chose: Howlin' - Bind Joey - David chose: Charlotte Adigery - Bear With Me (And I'll Stand Bare Before You)  Nolan - Guy chose: Vagabon - Water Me Down (Pancy Remix)April's album of the month and all our playlists, new music and discussions from the past decade or more can be found on our blog at www.thisisnothappening.net, which runs alongside the podcast choices and much, much more. Episode 9 of This Is Not Happening lands on another massively hyped album from the last year: Arlo Parks: Collapsed In Sunbeams. From being crowned BBC's 'Sound of 2020' and labelled 'the voice of a generation', the pressure on a debut album hasn't been this heavy in a long time. We dissect it to see it lived up to the expectation, with Nolan at the helm. In the second part of the show, we come back to picking our favourite new music since the turn of the year, with a really intriguing set of four great tracks We chose:Nolan: Tunnelvisions - Mirrored Identities David: Nubiyan Twist feat. Episode 8 of This Is Not Happening finds one of the most hotly-anticipated electronic music albums of the last year: Bicep's Isles. Made mostly before lockdown, and held back as music came to terms with the pandemic, Isles comes after their monster self-titled debut in 2017. Guy is at the helm to ask if you can dance to an album with no dancefloors and whether genres matter. In the second part of the show, we follow up covers with our favourite remixes, going right across the board with new and old, and finding out what makes a great remix. We chose: David: Eric B & Rakim - Paid In Full (Seven Minutes of Madness - The Coldcut Remix)Nolan: Freeform Five - No More Conversations (Mylo Remix)Joey: Fuck Buttons - Sweet Love For Planet Earth (Andrew Weatherall Remix)Guy: David Bowie - Lost Is Love (Hello Steve Reich Mix by James Murphy for the DFA)This album of the month and all our music discussions from the past decade or more can be found on our blog at www.thisisnothappening.net, which will run alongside the podcast choices and much, much more. This Is Not Happening sees our fourth episode in October talk about mysterious  US/UK collective Sault's 3rd album, Untitled [Black Is]. It's a shimmering work of  modern soul, playing with the genres, and we loved digging into it. We'll also each be bringing our own take on afro-centric music from across the amazing continent, and deciding again if we spin it, or bin it.
