Wednesday, another massive, viral hit for Netflix, owes its success largely to the charismatic Jenna Ortega says Streaming Wars host Colin Chisholm. Completely embodying the role in every way.Is the story particularly ground-breaking or intellectually challenging? Not really, but it doesn’t have to be. It should be interesting to see what else Netflix does with these storied characters and franchise. For more Streaming Wars content head to SaltWire.com, our YouTube page or your favourite podcast player.Send Colin your thoughts at colin.chisholm@herald.caTrailer footage courtesy of Netflix: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Di310...
Knives Out was a massive hit in 2019, could Netflix’s follow-up Glass Onion capture that same magic? Almost, Streaming Wars host Colin Chisholm says. With Daniel Craig returning as wonderfully campy Benoit Blanc for a new murder to solve, Glass Onion offers a more bombastic, in-your-face mystery that manages to maintain its biting cleverness. For more Streaming Wars content head to SaltWire.com, our YouTube page or your favourite podcast player. Streaming Wars host Colin Chisholm has finally broken down and watched White Lotus on Crave after many repeated suggestions from readers and friends. He’s glad he did. Both seasons in record time, in fact. The highly addictive, soapy satire is both a wonderful critique and a guilty pleasure in one incredible package. Mike White’s sharp writing and direction bring the vision into laser focus and Jennifer Coolidge provides a career-best.For more Streaming Wars content head to SaltWire.com, our YouTube page or your favourite podcast player. Streaming Wars host Colin Chisholm's Marvel saga continues.She-Hulk is almost in sight, but until then he spills the beans on Disney+ series Ms. Marvel. Focusing on a Muslim Pakistani-American teenager from New Jersey helps to inject a ton of personality and diversity into the Marvel universe and it's better for it. It might not be for everyone, but it doesn't have to be. Happy 2023! Thanks for sticking with Streaming Wars, we have a lot more content on the way!As always, to reach Colin for a suggestion, send him an email at colin.chisholm@herald.caFor more, head to SaltWire.com
For Streaming Wars host Colin Chisholm, Everything Everywhere All At Once is the finest example of what a multiverse movie can and should be.A heartwarming story about a Chinese-American laundromat owner who is fed up with life has to put it all on the line to save herself and her family. Full of great action, comedy and heart, with an all-time great performance from Michelle Yeoh, Everything Everywhere All At Once is a must watch and will definitely have a major presence at the upcoming Academy Awards.Start your Oscar watch list early and catch it on Prime Video. Happy 2023! Brunch is the best meal of the day - and, it turns out - a recipe for the best cooking competition show as well.Streaming Wars host Colin Chisholm says The Brunch might be the best show in the genre to date. Why? Mainly the heartwarming, friendly vibes that permeate throughout.Think less cutthroat and more bear hug. The Big Brunch is all about learning and growth and support. Oh, and delicious food. It's definitely worth checking out on Crave. Happy 2023!Thanks for sticking with Streaming Wars, we have a lot more content on the way!As always, to reach Colin for a suggestion, send him an email at colin.chisholm@herald.ca For more, head to SaltWire.com
Continuing host Colin Chisholm’s journey of watching as many Marvel shows as he can, just to finally get caught up, comes Moon Knight — a surprising, fascinating series that stands alone in the MCU canon.Oscar Isaac plays, well, multiple characters in a trippy, lucid story that puts the fate of humanity in the balance courtesy some unhappy Egyptian gods. It’s a fascinating MCU romp that expertly holds back until the perfect moment.Restraint is something few comic book franchises can pull off these days, but this Disney+ series manages it well. For more Streaming Wars content head to www.SaltWire.com
The latest Harry Styles vehicle My Policeman recently released on Prime Video and Streaming Wars host Colin Chisholm tries his hardest to be polite while saying ‘don’t quit your day job’ to the global superstar.Styles plays Tom, a policeman in 1950s England who falls in love with a museum curator at a time when homosexuals were heavily persecuted.Much of the story is told through flashback and there’s some good ingredients here, but Styles’ portrayal of the character feels out of place in an otherwise perfectly competent film.Have a suggestion for Colin? Streaming Wars host Colin Chisholm says. Netflix’s tentpole, flagship series is starting to show its age in The Crown’s fifth season.Look. Some folks love The Crown, can’t get enough of it. And if that’s you? Great! But, for those who aren’t sure or are maybe curious, this might let them know what they’re in for.Season five focuses on the early 90s for the house of Windsor and all of the various scandals and heartbreak that was happening at that particular moment in time for them. But, as the series nears modern times, it’s simply not as captivating.Have a suggestion for Colin? In this special holiday episode of Streaming Wars, host Colin Chisholm is joined by freelance writer Katie Ingram to chat all things A Christmas Carol and its various adaptations — from classics like The Muppets to all-new takes like Apple's Spirited. What makes the Charles Dickens classic so ripe for screenwriters? What makes a version good or bad? And what allows A Christmas Carol to continue to endure as a staple in the Christmas entertainment canon? All this and more is up for discussion. Stay tuned for more Streaming Wars content in 2023 on our Youtube page, your favourite podcast player and on SaltWire.com. A Christmas Carol has been adapted … a lot.Luckily, Apple’s Spirited takes the story and gives it a clever twist, says Streaming Wars host Colin Chisholm.Focusing on the ghosts who haunt folks who need a refresh in Christmas spirit, rather than on Scrooge, the audience gets a new look at a classic.Throw in some well-choreographed musical numbers and two dynamic actors and you have a winner.Though the plot can plod and some components don’t quite click, there’s more to enjoy than distaste in this Christmas flick, which is a pretty rare occurrence for the genre. For more Streaming Wars content head to SaltWire.com
With the holidays in full swing, so is the Christmas-related content on the various streaming platforms.Streaming Wars host Colin Chisholm decided to take a look at The Santa Clauses mini-series, now available on Disney+.Almost 30 years after the third Santa Clause film, the Santa Clauses focuses on a jaded and cranky Santa Claus, who’s ready to hang up his hat.But what will that mean for Christmas? It turns out not to be worth it as the series abandons nostalgia bait for tone-deaf political grandstanding that distracts from an otherwise perfectly fine reboot. For more Streaming Wars content head to SaltWire.com
Getting screeched in wasn’t a plot point Streaming Wars host Colin Chisholm was expecting to be talking about on a major streaming platform like Apple TV+, but, here we are.Come From Away, the smash hit musical has been brought directly from the stage in Broadway into our living rooms and it’s a heartwarming treat. With the original Broadway cast, recorded shortly after the COVID lockdown restrictions were lifted for health care and essential workers, the show tells of a group of passengers that were grounded in Gander following the 9/11 attached. What follows is a lovely, syrupy sweet story that folks from the East Coast in particular should enjoy.Have a suggestion for Colin? Streaming Wars host Colin Chisholm got a lot of recommendations from folks to try Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. He was apprehensive after the less-than-stellar Discovery and Picard.But. He’s glad he finally did. Featuring an episodic format, campy comedy, engaging characters and just plain fun — Strange New Worlds feels like a return to form for the series. Focusing on Captain Pike’s tenure as captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise, the crew has to use their wits to solve unique personal and galactic problems in each episode. Strange New Worlds is available on Crave and Paramount+ (probably – Colin still needs to check into that).Have a suggestion for Colin? Streaming Wars Host Colin Chisholm was pleasantly surprised by Netflix’s adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front, an anti-war film disguised as a war film. The audience follows a young German soldier who enlists and is quickly swept up into the horrors of the First World War. The movie doesn’t pull any punches as the brutal, disturbing reality of warfare is thrust upon him.Have a suggestion for Colin? Streaming Wars host Colin Chisholm had to force himself to keep hitting the play button for Netflix’s latest mystery/thriller The Watcher, which is loosely based on real events.A family moves from New York City to the New Jersey suburbs for a better life but are quickly terrorized by a series of disturbing letters and freaky neighbours. Who’s behind their misery. You’ll have to watch and find out, but maybe don’t.Have a suggestion for Colin?
