Welcome to the energy discussion on the Creating Structure Podcast with Mark Schow, PE, and David Kent, LEED AP, Director of Consulting at Wheaton Sprague Mark Schow,  is a PE, founder & principal with  ElevatedDesign.Boston  Using Less Energy. By Design.  He has worked on systems for a variety of building types. Saving energy through unique solutions and out of the box thinking is what drives him. David Kent, LEED AP, is Director of Building Envelope Consulting with https://www.wheatonsprague.com . David leads the consulting division at WS and is experienced in a wide variety of building types and cladding systems. We talk about Energy issues; Massachusetts- Stretch Code, Boston's BERDO- Energy Mandates, NY Local Law 97, and more. We discuss the relevance, importance, & often-overlooked interplay between HVAC and Building Enclosure systems. How can building energy use be optimized in new and existing buildings not only in MA, but anywhere? Massachusetts became the first state to adopt an above-code appendix to the "base" building energy code-the "Stretch Code". It emphasizes energy performance, as opposed to prescriptive requirements, and is designed to result in cost-effective construction that is more energy efficient than that built to the "base" energy code. BERDOBuildings account for nearly 70% of greenhouse gas emissions in Boston. The 2021 amendment to BERDO gives the City authority to set emissions standards for large existing buildings. The emissions standards will decrease over time, with all buildings achieving net zero emissions by 2050.  How do these things affect the building owner. Where do they start?Energy mandates and thermal efficiencies are not going away. Listen, engage, comment, and let's keep the conversation going. The Guests: Mr David Kent, LEED AP:Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-kent-179b2534/Mark Schow, PE:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-schow-p-e-07a06657/Elevated Design LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/elevated-design-inc/Website: https://elevateddesign.boston/team.htmlHost:John L Wheaton, PE, CEO WSE Inc; Creating Structure Podcast Host, ConnectorBlog: https://johnlwheaton.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-wheaton-pe-leed-ap-0694886Twitter: https://twitter.com/JohnLWheaton1Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/johnlwheaton1/Wheaton Sprague and Affiliates:Company: https://www.wheatonsprague.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/wheatonsprague Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wheatonsprague/Audio Production, Mixing, Engineering:BVS ProductionsLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/budget-video-solutions/Website: https://www.bvsfilmproductions.com/

Welcome to the first of a sub-series we will run intermittently entitled  "Facades That Inspire," within the Creating Structure Podcast. This one is with my colleague and friend Mr. David Kent, LEED AP, Senior Design Consultant at Wheaton Sprague Beginning his career in London, David has worked in exterior restoration, and curtain wall consulting for about two decades. He received a degree in Building Surveying in the UK, which focuses on the after care and adaptation of existing buildings and exteriors. His work experience spans a full range of construction typologies from social housing to high profile NYC land-marked properties such as the Park Avenue Armory and The Knox Hat Building at 452 Fifth Avenue and more. David's experience has lead to a thorough understanding of not only building exteriors, but their construction, operations, and systems of interiors. Mr. Kent brings his expertise and strong communication skills to every aspect of his work.Facades That Inspire,  (enabling facades that inspire is our core purpose at Wheaton Sprague) can take many forms. While we've done monumental, visible, noteworthy custom glazed curtain wall systems on new and existing buildings, in this discussion we highlight a masonry facade on an alley wall, part of an 1800's vintage building in Boston. Why is it important, what were the issues, how was it restored?  Listen to the discussion for the case study. And much thanks to our client, and architect, Olivia Dube, AIA, Owner and Principal  Tact and Grit Design Co. https://www.tactandgrit.com/The Guest and Colleague:Mr David Kent, LLED AP:Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-kent-179b2534/Architect:Olivia Dube, AIALinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/olivia-dube-aia-0b42b663/Host:John L Wheaton, PE, CEO WSE Inc; Creating Structure Podcast Host, ConnectorBlog: https://johnlwheaton.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-wheaton-pe-leed-ap-0694886Twitter: https://twitter.com/JohnLWheaton1Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/johnlwheaton1/Wheaton Sprague and Affiliates:Company: https://www.wheatonsprague.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/wheatonsprague Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wheatonsprague/Audio Production, Mixing, Engineering:BVS ProductionsLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/budget-video-solutions/Website: https://www.bvsfilmproductions.com/

So you think fasteners are boring? Maybe to some, but that may be because their importance is not recognized clearly. Everything matters in life, business, work, and construction, from the small details to the big. Fastener elements (screws, nuts, bolts, rivets, etc., etc.) hold together buildings, building components, and keep things secure. Often the last thing to be thought of and purchased, fastening devices need to be considered throughout the design process, and specified as early as is practical in the engineering, procurement, fabrication and construction process.Welcome to Creating Structure Podcast No. 41 with David Raskoskie. David is more than an "account representative." David is a value-adder, strategic partner, relationship builder, problem solver, and understands how to help client support their needs for bolts, screws, fasteners of all types. David's primary focus is on curtain wall and cladding systems of all types, particularly aluminum and glass or other infill components. We "go to school" for a bit on connecting devices, relationship selling, cold calls, fastener history, hydrogen embrittlement, product development and more. Kevin Carey is on the move, filled with energy, enthusiasm, working with vision and purpose. I won't be surprised if this episode soars to number one.Kevin is a Christian, husband, father, son, friend, mentor, coach, speaker, construction entrepreneur, executive, and more. Kevin grew up in the Chicago area, on the south side and suburbs. His father was (and still is) a union caulker, so Kevin figured he would go into the trades after high school. However, his mom wanted him to at least apply and consider college. Following the lead of a friend, Kevin applied and was accepted  by Illinois State University. After graduating with a degree in business and entrepreneurship, Kevin entered work-life. Starting at Menard's, he moved quickly from there into the specialty subcontracting business with D & M Architectural, then Alliance Glazing, then Dynamic Glass, rising from entry level to business development and eventually to the level of Executive Vice-President, in  only 15 years. In September of 2022, however, Kevin left Dynamic Glass and went  full time with the company (I say movement) he founded and created, Mountain Movers. Kevin provides coaching, mentoring, email news letters, workshops, planning, speaking and more. Kevin is the host of 17Twenty Podcast, on air since 2020. Kevin is active in TEXO and is currently Chairman of the Board for the non-profit Texas-based construction organization. I am grateful to have had an hour + of Kevin's time. I think you'll enjoy the conversation. It really hits the center of the Creating Structure Podcast content and audience. Oh, and Kevin will soon be publishing his first book. In this episode it was my pleasure to welcome Mr John Skok, RA, Architect. Of course we talk about John's background and journey into architecture, but the main focus of this episode is urban architecture, and specifically Detroit architecture. We talk about what John refers to as "The Detroit Opportunity." Starting in college, John has devoted many years to work specifically in Detroit, both in repurposed and new buildings. But there's a strong emphasis here on urban renewal, reclaiming or repurposing buildings, and the momentum John has seen build over the course of two-plus decades in his work with McIntosh Poris Architects. Enjoy the the architect's perspective and view point as we journey together. Welcome to the podcast, the one, the only, Mr. Andrew Haring, VP, Business Development, NGA (The National Glass Association.) We had some fun together on this episode, and there's also a lot of insights into Andrew's path, experiences, views of marketing, development in the glass industry, and more. I heard a man of principal, who really expresses humility and gratitude, to go with his knowledge and experience. Andrew started as a graphic designer, and quickly moved from the architectural services world into the CR Laurence Company (now part of OBE) eventually rising to the role of Vice President of Marketing. Andrew has been the VP of Business Development for NGA for 4 years now. He's a frequent presence on social media, especially LinkedIn and Twitter. Andrew has a great sense of humor and we enjoy some sparring from time to time.We talk in some depth about marketing, and the differences between marketing, business development, and sales.
