Growing up in a fundamentalist Christian sect, Ruth was told that women had no voice, no agency, and no leadership roles. But in Star Trek, she saw women who were equals, had important roles, and spoke their minds. She was inspired by them and by her mother and grandmother—who broke the rules to smuggle Star Trek to her in the form of clandestine television viewings, audio cassettes, and novels—to learn to be an independent woman and rescue her faith from an oppressive form of religion.
