I had the honor of sitting down with a hunter that I really respect this evening. Edgar has been hunting for quite a long time and pretty much all his hunting occurs on public lands. Edgar is a prolific writer and has the experience to back it up. I have known Edgar for the better part of 5 years and have watched him take countless people hunting and get them involved in the sport. He selflessly will take anyone along, answer questions, and give tips as he can.I have been trying to sit down with him since I started the podcast but we have both been so busy it has been tough. I hope you enjoy tonight's episode getting to know Edgar as next week we will get a little more in depth about tactics and his opinion on hunting and specifically upland hunting.Edgar's Instagram: Make sure you go to the link in his bio to read his most recent story.https://www.instagram.com/hunt_birdz/?hl=enInstagram:https://www.instagram.com/huntfisheatpodcast/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/HuntfisheatpodcastYoutube:https://youtube.com/channel/UCsngsHDDYKZny29ix3ekbqgWebsitehttps://www.hunt-fish-eat.com/Support the show
I had the honor of spending a couple days with my buddy Shawn Roberts down at his place in Northeast Texas. I have hunted hogs with Shawn before and he was gracious enough to let me stay in is guest bedroom while I was hunting with some guys from The Element Podcast. Shawn has been working like a madman getting things ready for the upcoming Virtual National Wild Turkey Federation Convention. Shawn is the NWTF Regional Director for Texas and is also getting ready for the upcoming Convention. I was able to pin him down for a couple minutes and pick his brain about Turkey Hunting. You definitely need to check out the NWTF and their convention this week! They have a ton of raffles and all sorts of good stuff to check out to help support conservation. The NWTF does a ton for conservation. They put a ton of dollars into the ground to help preserve habitat for all animals. If you want to support a great organization, you can't beat the NWTF!Links:https://www.nwtf.org/Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/huntfisheatpodcast/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/HuntfisheatpodcastYoutube:https://youtube.com/channel/UCsngsHDDYKZny29ix3ekbqgWebsitehttps://www.hunt-fish-eat.com/Walton's INC Providing everything but the meat, Walton's has you covered for cooking and processing your harvest.Clay Shooting Apparel Awesome company making awesome apparel for the avid outdoorsman and shooters.Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Tonight is my last night in Colorado. I sat down with my friends Lisa & Bruce Boroski. We were able to connect with a cow elk yesterday and spent the morning in the goose blind with the guys from Mile High Note Game Calls. This trip was amazing and I can't say enough nice things about Trophy Ridge Outfitters LLC. Bruce and Lisa went above and beyond for Denton and I. We were just here to harvest a Cow Elk but they treated us amazingly. TRO's Tagline is "It's about the Experience". They mean it. We got to see 20+ Bulls before finding the heard and being able to connect with a cow.The experience was second to none. Once we spotted the elk, walking down the hill, hearing a bull rip out a couple bugle's then watching 300+ elk mill around. Being able to take my time and make a wonderful shot at 487 yards and drop that elk was a beautiful scene right as the sun was setting. It was a great way to start the year. You can bet we will be back and Denton will be up to bat this time!If you want to hunt the west, whether Elk, Mule Deer, or Turkeys in Colorado, or Mountain Lions in New Mexico or chasing walleye, Trophy Ridge Outfitters are the ticket! What a heck of a night. The second night in Colorado we went over to Thoms Diesing's house and sat down with a bunch of guys to discuss elk hunting. Thomas is a world champion elk caller. Thomas and his Dad run Mile High Note Game calls. They make elk and turkey calls. Both of them offer lessons in addition to their calls for those wanting to learn how to be successful in the field.Make sure you have a note pad during this episode as you will get a free lesson from Thomas Diesing. Denton (D-Money) along with Bruce of Trophy Ridge Outfitters LLC were along for the ride and we had a ball of a time.We covered protips like carrying a bottle of doe urine in your pack and allowing it to slowly leak out so you mask your scent to stories about mountain lion encounters in the dark timber. Make sure you go check out Mile High Note game calls and Trophy Ridge Outfitters LLC for your western hunting adventures. As always we have a good time and stay lighthearted!Links:Trophy Ridge Outfitters LLChttps://trophyridgeoutfittersllc.com/Mile High Note Game Callshttps://www.milehighnotegamecalls.com/Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/huntfisheatpodcast/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/HuntfisheatpodcastYoutube:https://youtube.com/channel/UCsngsHDDYKZny29ix3ekbqgWebsitehttps://www.hunt-fish-eat.com/Walton's INC Providing everything but the meat, Walton's has you covered for cooking and processing your harvest.Clay Shooting Apparel Awesome company making awesome apparel for the avid outdoorsman and shooters.Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. We are in Fort Collins Colorado getting ready to head out on a late season Cow Elk hunt.We discussed a bunch of topics focusing on differences between hunting waterfowl in Colorado and Arkansas, hunting where there are big cats in play, and that you should process your own game!We had a great time and even made a plea to help Brandon Wilmoth of the NWTF with his gun raffle! Seriously, the guy needs all the help he can get.Bruce, Brandon, and Lisa are with Trophy Ridge  Outfitters LLC. They guide for trophy class Mule Deer, elk, and turkeys. They are also a super cool group of people! Sit down and listen to this episode with my buddies Ronnie Snedegar & Larry "Laredo" Case. I spent the day chasing bushy tails over Ronnie's world champion dogs. Larry's Kerr dog got involved as well and helped us out! We talked about how to train squirrel dogs, what is a squirrel dog and why squirrel hunting is so important. We as a hunting/shooting community have an obligation to grow the sport now more than ever. Hunting squirrels is very approachable and probably one of the most widespread hunting opportunities in the nation. Hunting squirrels is a heck of a lot of fun as well and a great way to introduce kids to the sport. Ronnie and Larry were gracious enough to host me in their home woods of West Virginia to chase squirrels. This evening right before we recorded this we were able to chase some raccoons as well.If you haven't hunted squirrels, you should and if you do hunt squirrels make sure to take a new hunter with you next time!It was a great day. Brandon Hayden joined me today on this episode of the Hunt Fish Eat Podcast. Brandon was the Chef De Partie at Justus Drug store in Smithville, MO. Justus Drug Store is a farm to table restaurant focused on using ingredients that come from a 100 mile radius of the restaurant. I met Brandon when we were both mentoring a dove hunt for the awesome ladies of WildHERness. Brandon whipped up some dove breast and polenta with a tomato gravy all on the burner from a turkey fryer and a park bench at glen elder state park. It was a delicious meal and I was really excited to get to sit down with someone that has a very technical cooking background. In this episode we discussed how you should treat your wild game when harvesting it, some good concepts to have about cooking and especially wild game, also we discussed some bomb proof cooking methods.Brandon will be joining me for some hunting adventures this fall, so I am sure we will hear more from him! Tonight I sat down with Matt Baum of the Lethal Podcast and the Ashby Bowhunting Foundation (ABF). We talked about Heavy Arrows. We used terms like "Shaft" & "Penetration" and didn't even giggle. Although Matt did cough a couple times, he probably doesn't have "The Rona" and Bigfoot makes thuds in the woods not cracks.A lot of guys are shooting arrows that weigh about 300-350 grains with an expandable broadhead. That is the general lighter arrow weight. We discuss in this episode the benefit's of going with a heavier arrow setup with a cut on contact broadhead. Our goal as hunters is to be as ethical as possible when hunting. Simply put, the better penetration you have when shooting an animal, the higher chance you have of recovering that animal. If you can put two holes in an animal (Pass Through shot) you have a much higher chance of killing and recovering that animal than if you put one in that animal.A couple of the 12 factors of penetration that are really important are:- Structural Integrity, the arrow needs to not break or have any weakness in it.- Perfect Arrow Flight- Arrow needs to fly straight and recover quickly out of the bow- Arrow's FOC(Front of Center) having a 15-20% FOC will increase the chances of penetration.- Arrow Mass, having a higher total mass of weight increases penetration- Fixed blade broadhead- it takes less force for a cut on contact broadhead to penetrate than a mechanical. All these factors will help maintain momentum and increase penetration.Enjoy and feel free to send along your hate and feedback!
