Growth and transformation are not linear.I recently got a new tattoo representing a caterpillar's change to a butterfly. The tat reminded me of the transformation I've made since leaving BigLaw. But just as a caterpillar can't become a butterfly without going through the messy chrysalis stage, I couldn't make the transformation in my life without going through a similar stage, what I call the messy middle.Yet, the thing I didn't realise, and that always hits me square in the face when I think all is good, is that the growth never stops, which means at some point, you're gonna find yourself in the messy middle again. How often do you tell yourself that you don't have a choice about something?I used to do it all the time, especially when thinking about leaving BigLaw. I'd say things like:🚫 I don;t have a choice🚫 I can't leave🚫 I'm just stuck here for the rest of my career.🚫 I've made my bed, and now I have to keep lying in it. You may not like a particular choice's consequences or potential outcome, but it doesn't mean you don't have one. This episode is a manifesto, a call to arms to get you thinking differently. In this week's episode, I talk about a conversation with a friend. We were having a conversation and talking about what I've been doing in terms of coaching, the content I've been sharing., and that I'm looking to do more speaking events. And they said I wouldn't want you speaking in my organisation. I laughed! They meant it in the nicest possible way. And it was a little bit tongue in cheek. But the general gist was that everybody would want to leave if I spoke at their organisation and to their team. For the record, I won't make you quit; that's not what I do.
