Making your vacations a self-care or wellness experience is a major trend in the travel industry. It makes sense if you think about it. Being away from the noise of daily life is a perfect time to pause for some self-love and dive further into your healing journey. But there's a difference between the best destinations for solo travel and the best destinations for self-care travel. Or as I like to call them, "finding me" travel experiences. Without recognizing I was doing it, I've become a quasi-expert in planning and experiencing these types of trips and will share some of my favorite self-care travel destinations.
We all need time to ourselves. Discover my go-to self-care vacation ideas and start planning your next solo adventure.
Hanging On By a Thread

Hanging On By a Thread

2023-02-0224:15

Life can feel like it’s too much to handle, and you’re holding on by a thread. If you’ve ever felt this way, you’re not alone. Sometimes it feels like there's too much stuff. You want to be successful, be there for your family and friends, and take care of your well-being - but it’s too much. When you feel like you’re hanging by a thread, it’s hard to dream, to move, or to breathe. ** NEWSFLASH ** The problem isn’t that you have too much on your plate. It’s not about capacity. In today’s podcast, we get to the root of what keeps many women silently suffering and feeling like they are barely holding on. My hope is this will help you. If you feel like you're barely holding on, I invite you to listen to one of the Reiki healings posted in previous podcast episodes and/or talk to a therapist. Don't go it alone! Healing and striving for abundance are not meant to be 24/7 activities. Yet knowing you're not meant to work on self-improvement constantly and putting this knowledge into action often feels like oil and water; they don't mix well. One reason is that we tend to only focus on two seasons in our life; a season of productivity (sow) and a season where we enjoy the rewards of our labor (harvesting). But these aren’t the only seasons in our lives.Today we're discussing the season of not pushing yourself to strive to achieve, which is often neglected. This is a season where you're not focused on your healing or learning and instead simply allowing your mind and body to rest. I know rest feels like such a dirty word in American culture. But it is a season just as important as healing, growing, and abundance, and it's time to give it some attention during today's mental vacay.
No one knows you better than you. That's why the best advice comes from within rather than externally. It sounds like a no-brainer, but when you add a lack of self-trust to the mix, there's an entanglement. The need for seeking reassurance may be a subconscious one that you may not even recognize as a lack of self-trust—for example, constantly complaining to your BFF or asking others for advice about every aspect of your life. It can also look like a heavy focus on checking your horoscope or seeking advice from a spiritual healer. It seems so normal and innocent, but these are both acts of us looking externally for reassurance of our emotions and life decisions.I recently noticed that I've been tapping within and asking myself for advice, which feels pretty good. In today's episode, I share my personal journey and an exercise to help getting advice from yourself become your go-to method. There's nothing wrong with getting advice from others or working with healers to help guide you on your healing journey. The episode is a chance to reflect on self-trust, how you're using your healing tools, and to help you maximize the knowledge and power that lies within you. The answers to all you need are within you, it's a matter of discovering how to trust.
'Tis the season for leveling up. It’s a time for people to make resolutions to eat better, exercise more, save money, and create healthy boundaries. All these things have one thing in common — CHANGE! There is an assumption that change is easy. All you need to do is decide, and poof, you can make any changes in your life. But what about the uncomfortable side of change? The part that doesn't feel good. It’s time to bring some awareness to the darker side of change. This episode is not intended to scare you from making changes. On the contrary, it is to help you become better equipped to get through the uncomfortable side of change, so you don’t give up. When you can get comfortable with being uncomfortable while shifting your habits, it will help you get to your desired goal. So let’s get cozy with being uncomfortable in this season of leveling up!
This Reiki healing is the final episode in our 5-part Hella Relax series. I couldn't think of a better way to start a new year than to focus on relaxing the mind and body. You can listen to this as a guided meditation, have it playing in the background while you work, or listen to it whenever you need to hella relax. You may feel tingling or other sensations in your body, which is normal. And if you feel nothing, that's normal too as Reiki also works on the subconscious level. I encourage you to drink plenty of water after listening to this episode. Also, things may or may not come up emotionally. This is not a time to judge but a space to simply observe and be present. Enjoy! Hella Relax Podcast Series: All you need to do is a quick Google search to discover thousands are struggling with ways to relax. This 5-part series will discuss why you can’t relax, how many are trying to like the wrong way and how it’s hurting them, tips for different ways to relax, and we’ll end with a beautiful meditation to ease the mind and body into deep relaxation.
Many ancient healing methods for relaxation are dismissed nowadays. Instead, we run to pills, a bottle of wine, or the latest wellness fad when we need to relax. My dad always said, "If it's not broken, don't try to fix it." Reiki is an ancient healing technique many cultures have used for years. In today's episode, I discuss some of the benefits of Reiki. One of the most important benefits of using Reiki is that it provides deep relaxation. I hella love to use Reiki when I'm feeling stressed or overwhelmed. It's a simple but impactful healing method suitable for everyone. Even my cousin's little girl is using Reiki for self-healing! Don't miss next week's episode for a taste of Reiki!Hella Relax Podcast Series: All you need to do is a quick Google search to discover thousands are struggling with ways to relax. With the recent suicide of Stephen “Twitch” Boss, I knew it was time to have this chat. Behind that confident smile can be someone struggling to keep it together. I know this personally as someone who attempted to commit suicide more than once. There isn’t a stereotypical look for someone thinking about suicide. The person next to you in line or your best friend can be secretly struggling. Surviving suicide is one of the hardest things I’ve done. The shame and guilt alone made me wish I didn’t make it. But I survived the suicide attempts and how people treated me afterward. Today I want to shine a light on suicide, especially in the Black community, where there’s this stigma around mental health and suicide. It’s time to remove this need to “perform” and “be” to heal. If you’re having suicidal thoughts, I encourage you to call 988 for help. I pray this episode will help us have an honest conversation about suicide, why someone would want to end their life, and resources if money is a barrier to getting help.
It's time to redefine what it means to relax. As a child, the word 'relax' meant getting my hair straightened. Nowadays, everyone's talking about how important it is to relax. But we aren't all working for the same definition. In the third part of this 5-part podcast series on relaxation, we're diving deeper into the meaning of relaxation and discussing practical ways to rethink relaxing that work for you and not against you.
Last week we covered why you can’t relax, and today it’s all about how you’re unintentionally relaxing the wrong way. Have you ever attempted to unwind and wondered why you still didn’t feel relaxed? You probably were doing one of these things we’ll be discussing today. I, too, have fallen victim to attempting to use some of these methods and felt left still stressed AF afterward. It’s annoying when you’re trying actually to relax, and it still doesn’t work. In today’s episode, discover if you’re possibly going about relaxing the wrong way. Relax Series: All you need to do is a quick Google search to discover thousands are struggling with ways to relax. Relaxing doesn’t come easy to everyone. It’s frustrating to be told to relax, as it can feel as hard as being told to hit Whitney Houston’s high notes. Yet, we are so desperate to find ways to unwind and recharge our energy. We attempt to do nothing and it feels like torture. We scream at ourselves, “I must relax, I must relax, I must relax,” hoping that saying the words will help, but they don’t. So why can’t you relax? The elephant in the room is that many of us have made relaxing another goal we need to achieve. And that changes everything! Today’s episode is the first in a 5-part series on relaxation. In this episode, we’ll discuss reasons why you can’t relax. Hella Relax Podcast Series: All you need to do is a quick Google search to discover thousands are struggling with ways to relax. The holidays and family gatherings can be stressful AF! Old family issues or emotions easily come up, triggering you as if you were your younger self all over again. This guided meditation and breathwork is a practical tool for relieving stress relief and clearing emotions of the past. I love this breathing technique as it's like a mental vacation that's easy to do and can be done anywhere (car, bed, dinner table, etc.). It’s especially useful for dealing with stressful relationships and past family issues. It can remove unsettling thoughts from the past that surface in the present. This Kundalini Yoga meditation also can take difficult situations in the present and release them to a higher power. If you want to skip the intro, the meditation starts at 6:44. I recommend practicing in a seated position with a straight spine. Place the hands at the center of the chest with only the tips of the thumbs and fingers touching the corresponding fingers on the opposite hand. Leave space between the palms with the fingertips pointing upward. Focus the eyes at the tip of the nose and inhale for 5 seconds, hold for 5 seconds, and then exhale for 5 seconds. Continue for 11 minutes or until you feel relief from the stress.
Sometimes we’re just not okay. The wellness industry wants you to jump on the #itsokaynottobeok trend. I don’t disagree with the message. Yet, when you’re feeling burnout, depressed, or one step from losing it, #itsokaynottobeok feels like an empty campaign promise. Knowing it’s ok not to be ok and knowing how to get through this season are two different things. I’m more interested in the latter. When that feeling of not being ok kicks in, guidance on how to flow through it and not drown is needed; not a cute hashtag that doesn't give you any tools. It’s time we take a quick mental vacay from life to discover how to be ok with not being ok. On this tour, I’ll guide you through avoiding some major pitfalls and ways to flow through not being ok like a boss.
The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is finally here! This movie evokes such powerful images of female warriors taking charge and protecting their community. It reminds me of the everyday warrior in all of us. She may not have the fierce clothing or fancy blades, but that woman you see every day in the mirror is no less of a warrior, especially if you identify as a woman of color. Today I’m pausing to talk about the true strength of a warrior. A true warrior is most powerful when she realizes she no longer needs her ‘blades’ to protect her peace. My blade of choice is my sharp wit. It’s not as good as my cousin’s, but it has cut many. Your blade might be your thick skin or humor. Whatever your blade of choice, it has helped you to survive, so of course, it feels more like a cozy blanket. But a blade is still a blade. When you can learn to survive without the blades that have kept you safe to this point, now that’s some kind of next-level Wakanda Forever type of moment. That’s when we shine in our true essence and protect our peace. So join me as we pause from the outside world to take another step on this healing journey collectively. I met an interesting guy who made me think. I was telling him about what I do, and he asked, “What does the healer do when they need healing?” And that’s how we got to today’s topic. I have created a gumbo of rituals, people, and items I use to help me heal as a healer. I incorporate many things into my wellness gumbo, but I only focused on ten ingredients currently nourishing my soul in today's episode. Sidenote: I’m not sharing these to endorse any person or product, but as resources of quick ways I pause and refuel my mind, body, and spirit as a Black woman in America. And trust me, we all need to find what works for us to keep our sanity! If you have recommendations of quick ways I can further nourish myself that are working for you, send me a message, and I'll give you a shoutout and share with the collective on a future podcast episode. You can be waiting a lifetime for some folks to apologize. Yet, here we are, still waiting for people who have done us dirty to apologize. Like, they know they were wrong, so why not apologize? However, waiting on that apology is like a slow leak in your happiness and healing that you didn't even realize was leaking. It's time to plug that leak but first, let's talk about that apology you and I have been waiting on and what's really going on when you wait on apologies. In this episode, I referenced a podcast I did earlier on grief. There are actually two podcasts I'd recommend listening to that may help you in this healing process. The first is episode 15, Grieving 2020, and the other is episode 16, about Exhaling 2020.Show notes: Join the Hella Well With Danielle newsletter for my biggest ah-ha moments from each episode and special announcements. I am notorious for having major arguments and fights all in my head. Confrontation gives me anxiety, so it was always safer to keep my resentment, anger, and clapbacks in my head. Has this contributed to my high blood pressure? Probably. But then, I learned a trick that helped me quickly and easily let go of resentment. I’m sharing that trick in hopes that it can help someone else. It may be a duh moment when you hear it, but doing it might take some practice. It did for me. But once you learn how to let go of resentment and anger, you will feel lighter and, honestly, happier. Again, that’s what happened to me. If you try this trick, let me know how it goes. Did it work? Did you run into challenges? And if so, what were they as maybe I might have some insights that can help.
Giving yourself your undivided attention doesn't mean locking yourself up in a room or escaping to Bali for a solo trip. Granted, I've done both and recently realized I still wasn't fully giving myself my undivided attention. I recently attended a retreat where the participants were asked to give themselves our undivided attention in a group setting. Through this process that I share in today's episode, I discovered a new level of self-love that I didn't know was possible.
