Welcome back to Murphy's Market Minute with Elliot. This week, we're diving deep into market insights, fresh economic articles, and the ever-elusive guest appearances from Rip.
We kick things off by exploring two fascinating articles, one detailing China's economic relationship with the U.S., and the other focusing on the resurgence of spending power within the American middle class.
Elliot then sheds some light on China's potential slowdown, debunking media-driven narratives and emphasizing its limited impact on U.S. growth. Contrary to what some headlines might suggest, there's minimal cause for panic.
We also dive deep into the middle class's uphill journey in regaining their spending power, emphasizing the slow but steady progress seen in recent times. There's a silver lining as we inch closer to the 100% mark.
Concluding, Elliott offers a refreshing perspective on media narratives, the importance of staying informed, and reading beyond just the headlines.
Stay tuned, and keep an eye out for more updates, insights, and of course, Rip's unpredictable appearances!

Welcome back to this week's edition of Murphy's Market Minute! In today's episode, Elliot discusses two seemingly contrasting articles, shedding light on the current state of financial health in the United States and examining the new bull market in stocks.
⏰ Time Stamps:
00:00 - Introduction
00:30 - Article 1: Americans lost financial ground last year
01:31 - Cash reserve issues and consumer financial stress
02:41 - Bright spots: financial health improvement and inflation deceleration

06:14 - Positive outlook for 2023

📉 Article 1 highlights the decline in Americans' financial health in the past year, with fewer people having funds to cover six months of expenses and excellent credit scores. However, it also emphasizes the stabilization of financial health in recent months and an improving outlook.
📈 Article 2 focuses on the new bull market in stocks and presents a more positive narrative. Fundstrat believes that we are six months into the bull market, with several indices and funds showing significant year-to-date gains.
🔊 Elliot observes a shift in the overall narrative from predominantly negative to a more balanced approach, with positive counterpoints being presented. This change may indicate an improving analyst mood and overall market sentiment.
💡 Elliot concludes that the improving narrative and more positive outlook may contribute to a good year for portfolios, helping investors regain some of the losses experienced in the previous year.

Welcome to this week's edition of Murphy's Market Minute with your host, Elliot Omanson. Today is March 10th, and as always, Elliot is here to provide you with a quick and concise update on the current state of the market.
Before we dive into the market update, Elliot has some exciting news to share. He reveals that it's going to be his 21st anniversary in seven days, but he's going to celebrate it by leaving his wife in Kansas and going to Florida. Of course, he's just kidding and will be celebrating with his wife this weekend.
Today's episode has a special guest, Cherie, who is new to OWLFI but not new to Elliot. Cherie's son and Elliot's son have been friends for almost a decade, and they've talked for about six months. Elliot is thrilled to bring someone with the skill sets he needs onto his team, and they will discuss Cherie's role at OWLFI later in the video.
Elliot then moves on to the market update, and unfortunately, it's not good news. The market is down due to the Fed talking about persistent inflation, and the odds of them being able to create a soft landing are becoming less and less. The White House has announced a slew of taxes to help slow the economy down and bring inflation under control even quicker.
However, Elliot is not all doom and gloom and has an exciting article to share. It's from a guy named Ken Fisher, who is famous for trashing annuities while owning an 86-million-dollar stake in an annuity company. Ten years later, he wrote an excellent article titled "A bull market is in full swing, and most of us are in denial." Elliot is excited about this article because it highlights what he's been saying all along that the market has been on an upward trend for the past few months, and it's time to invest in it.
Elliot goes on to explain how the market had a great start to the year, but towards the end of February, it shed about half of what it had gained due to the end-of-the-year bump. However, it gained some traction in March but has been struggling to keep it going since then. Ken Fisher talks about how it's been four months since the stock market began its recovery and all the excuses as to why it's not a real bull market from the Fed and its rate hikes, inflation, recession, Chinese high balloons, and more.
Elliot believes that this is a time to invest in the market, and he's confident that Cherie's skill sets will help his team navigate the market better. He's excited to see what the future holds for OWLFI and his team.

"The unexpected acceleration in non-farm payroll growth in July, together with the further decline in the unemployment rate and the renewed pick-up in wage pressure, make a mockery of claims that the economy is on the brink of recession," Michael Pearce, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics, wrote in a note following Friday's report."
What a summer we have been having. Record-breaking heat waves, supply chain issues, talk of recessions, and inflation. Elliot feels we are in a clickbait media environment where people want to profit off fear, uncertainty, and doubt. We are watching the market wanting to get a footing, it wants to go up, but right now, it is difficult with all the talk of inflation and recession. Sometimes, it seems pretty bad, but when you look at the underlying numbers, it's not as bad as it might seem.

The focus has been on individuals and retirement planning in the previous videos. In this video, we wanted to shift focus and talk about business owners and how we can help them. There are some unique strategies that, as businesses grow, we can implement, from helping mitigate taxes, succession planning, and to the point of selling their business. Everyone is familiar with the saying, "It's not how much you make, it's how much you keep." Unfortunately, the largest source of money that we lose goes to taxes. There is a form of arbitrage in-laws. The government created laws and put systems in place for those laws, then laws change, and the systems don't change. And that presents a unique opportunity. When it comes to money, we have money that we receive in the form of income that is taxed as income tax. Income tax is one of the worst ways to be taxed and can be up to 45%, depending on your state. Tax deferral is excellent because you get to keep your money that would have otherwise gone to the government and let it grow in the meantime. But when it comes out, it is taxed as income tax. Then there is a tax deduction, but what is even better than that? An exemption.
As a W2 employee, you cannot receive tax exemptions, but you certainly can as a business owner. OWLFI has found that we gain a deeper and more robust understanding of the tax code by bringing the different industries and professions together. Many people tell us we are creative, but being creative means taking something and creating something new, which is not possible with the tax code. That leaves you to become an expert and highly familiar with the tax code. And as a financial advisor, you may have one understanding, but as a CPA, they might read it and have another. But when all these professionals read it together, there might be an additional level. There are sections of the tax code that most people are very unfamiliar with, and when followed correctly, they create significant benefits.
Rip will not be joining us in this week's video as he is very picky with his seat selection. On Wednesday this week, we had quite the sell-off. Our most aggressive tech funds, which are supposed to be getting hammered, are up over 10%. So when we look at our portfolios, we are down from our highs but still have significant gains in our accounts and are just not as high as we used to be. We hear the word "recession" thrown around a lot, and what does that mean? A recession, by definition, is two-quarters of negative GDP. We have had one quarter in the books and will likely have a second. In most people's minds, a recession is more than just two-quarters of negative GDP, and a recession would also mean layoffs, decreased wages, and things like that. Those are some of the most important things, yet it seems as if the government is rooting for them. If we have reduced GDP for two consecutive quarters yet, employers are still hiring and increasing wages. Is that a recession that is going to matter? People often wait until there is some significant moment in their life to come to a financial advisor. As a result, there is a lot of anxiety built up in people's heads about sitting down and going over their finances or investments, which prevents them from taking action regarding many of these things. OWLFI operates from the standpoint of the plan first and investing second. And the reason for this is that it helps us better understand you and all aspects of your financial life. We then take all this information we have learned and gathered to create a strategic plan. With every concern there is, there is an opportunity, an opportunity to fix that concern. When we meet with people, they often find out they're in a better situation than they thought.

In the last video, we talked about retirement, the four posing risks, and how crucial they are. Throughout Dirk's career, he always noticed issues and things that needed to be solved within the industry. Elliot and Dirk both saw these things from different areas at the same time before they knew each other, Dirk as a CPA and Elliot as a financial advisor. It's human nature to continue on the same path and the same thing, even though the environment or different things in the environment have changed. At some point, we need to look at the changes in the system and realize it doesn't work anymore. That is one of the benefits of having the all-in-one team that OWLFI has created. Having CPAs, Financial Advisors, and Attorneys working together on behalf of you, they can acknowledge these things that have changed and work together on new solutions. And as the client, you can be more assured in these adjustments when a whole team, like what we have at OWLFI, is backing these decisions.

Trying to build a company within the financial industry presents many challenges. Many of these pertain to all businesses, while some pertain to the financial sector. If the people in this industry don't fix these issues first, then people in the government will try to fix them for us. For example, 64% of people entering retirement have four hundred thousand dollars or less in retirement assets. When you combine that with the most often heard advertisement for the financial industry, "Do you have half a million or more of investable assets?" That eliminates the bulk of people entering retirement and, sadly, most people who genuinely need help within the financial industry. There are many reasons most financial firms use that half a million minimum, and the most significant factor is the economy of scale associated with these advisors. Doing our job well requires us to spend a considerable amount of time with people. A relatively easy solution popped up in trying to figure out how we would navigate this problem, and it has to do with the culture we are trying to create at OWLFI. People always ask us if we have a minimum investment requirement, and the answer is no. We focus on two things and believe these are the only two things that matter. The first one is, do we enjoy talking to you, and do we connect and understand you? The second is can we help you? If we feel like we enjoy talking to you and can help you, we will take you on as a client. That is also more difficult because we limit our advisors to no more than 100 clients. So how can we take on any client with any amount of investable assets? Every advisor has clients with millions and millions of dollars, and the value of the work we provide to them makes us significant amounts of revenue. One of the beautiful things about that is that it puts us in a position with only one hundred clients and does not have to chase more clients constantly. It seems as if the minute you give a regular financial advisor your money, you never hear from them again because they have to find the next client immediately. Due to the nature of our OWLFI where we have the attorneys, the CPAs, the financial advisors, and the insurance agents that all work together on behalf of the client with a one-team mentality. That attracts clients with a significant net worth, and at the same time, our advisors are only attempting to attract 100 clients then our advisors can take on anybody. Doing this allows many people of all different backgrounds to receive the highest level of financial advice.

Why is OWLFI structured the way it is? In the traditional financial space, all the different professions, from your attorneys, CPAs, financial advisors, and insurance agents, they're all siloed. And because they are siloed, we find that they're all in a state of competing against one another. In the beginning, here at OWLFI, we saw disconnects between the different financial professionals. They were at odds with one another to the detriment of their clients. So we felt that it would be better if we could get everybody together under the same roof on the same team. With the usual referral agreement, you don't get all your professionals working together on the entire planning process and understanding the intricacies of the deployed strategies. When we do this, our clients receive a much broader, more robust, strategic plan that is better prepared to deal with market fluctuations, longevity risks, inflation risks, and the general state of uncertainty and unknown that people face heading into retirement.
