What was discussed-•  Guidelines, standards, and resources for Remote Auditing•The purpose of auditing, includes verifying the conformance of an organization’s processes and management system to defined requirements. It depends on the type of audit and the objective and stated criteria, which can vary. The standard/s which an audit may be conducted could be an organization’s own internal procedures/work instructions, a management system standard such as ISO 9001, AS9100, or International Automotive Task Force (IATF) 16949; ISO 22000, “Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS) customer-specified requirements; or government regulations such as FAA/Nadcap, NRC, etc...• Remote auditing has been a hot topic the last year, given the circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, however, remote auditing has been around for over a decade. • Planning is key for understanding the risks to achieve audit objectives based upon the scopes/criteria, and most suitable/available technology, and auditor/auditee complete understanding of the (ICT) Information and Communications Technology platform/s to be used.• Companies, Registrars & Accreditation Organizations are now and must continue to reinvent and adapt for the “new normal” regarding “Remote Auditing” and figure out ways to achieve a balance in assuring Quality Management System conformance versus not auditing at all and maintaining the rigor & respect of a QMS and/or Accreditation program moving forward.• ISO 19011-Annex A.1-option and A.16 for remote and virtual auditing and the ISO/IEC 17021 has recognized remote auditing since 2011. Considerations of the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) Mandatory Documents -MD4 and MD5-2019, Guidance ID3 are available, links included.• There are still limitations to consider, like initial audits and/or for critical processes and highly classified facilities and proprietary processes or problematic non-conforming systems previously audited.• Remote Auditing Practices and Resources *Remote Auditing: A Quick and Easy Guide for Management System Auditors Paperback –2020-Denise RobitailleLinks to relevant sourceshttps://www.iaf.nu/articles/Mandatory_Documents_/38•IAF MD4:2018, ICT is the use of technology for gathering, storing, retrieving, processing, analyzing, and transmitting the information. What was discussed:• Consider Industrial Safety & Hygiene News, using figures from OSHA studies, reports that 1 in 250 construction workers will die from a welding injury. With over 1/2 a million American welders working today, we can conservatively expect 2,000 welding fatalities in our lifetime. 31 Jul 2019• In fact, the risks associated w/ workplace operations that include welding, cutting, & brazing result in the deaths of approximately 60 workers each year in the United States alone. This number translates to a risk of greater than four fatal injuries in every thousand workers over their careers.    8 Jan 2019• First and foremost, always consult a qualified and knowledgeable HSE expert and/or CSP • Proper planning with risk assessment= key essential ingredients & for contingencies & understanding the kind of risks prior to any welding & cutting operations. • Welding Training programs may want to consider incorporating  “additional and varied training with mock-ups” for not just welding PPE and Hot Work permitting, but also for proper compressed gas cylinder handling, electrical safety, working in confined spaces, scaffolding & working at heights/fall protection as well. Links to relevant sourceshttps://www.aws.org/standards/page/ansi-z491NFPA, National Fire Protection Agency-Standard for Fire Prevention During Welding, Cutting, and Other Hot Work: This standard presents provisions to prevent injury, loss of life, and loss of property from fire or explosion as a result of hot work projects such as welding, heat-treating, grinding, and similar applications producing or using sparks, flames, or heat. What was discussed-• Vocational, Diploma, Certificate and A.A.S Welding-NDT-Quality Programs- A.A.S. program options, and why I think are good options for those entering the field-wanting to really go to the next level as a welding technician, inspector supervisor, NDT Engineer, Level III, Quality Manager, Auditor, Technician, etc.• Importance of AWS SENSE (Schools Excelling Through National Skills Education aligned programs and curriculum guidelines or equivalent. Does the welding education program have a Certified Welding Inspector Educator or experienced technical instructor with welding skills?  Are they or the program active with AWS Education and Membership? • Private Welder Training programs, usually several are more costly and focus more on “arc on time” -to get you employed, typically, (not all) less on the science and technical aspects, of course, a good option for many in career transitioning, needing employment expedited, there is a balance.• AWS Welding Journal April 202O issue includes 50 programs/colleges and private welding programs, as well as several relevant short articles in that month -publication… again a great benefit of membership, is discussed in the last episode.• ABET and ACCSC Accreditation of programs one should consider and verify if the program has.  • Checking and confirming the instructor’s qualifications, and certifications for both welding and NDT. Is he/she certified in multiple welding processes, both plate, pipe, carbon and alloy steels, stainless, and aluminum or do they have limited qualifications/certifications? Is the NDT instructor qualified as ASNT NDT Level III in the methods instructing? Do they have real industry hands-on experience working or most just in teaching?• ASNT Materials Evaluation September 2020 periodical includes a monthly calendar for organizations offering NDT training courses to the public and yearly has an Education Spotlight of many NDT Training programs, again a great benefit of membership discussed last episode.Check out useful links for options in pursuing careers in welding- non-destructive testing or QualitySupport the showWelding-NDT-Quality Guru Podcast Thank you for listening to this Episode. What was discussed• ASTM Vol. 03.03, Nondestructive Testing, E 543, “Standard Specification for Agencies Performing Nondestructive Testing” covers minimum requirements for agencies performing the Nondestructive examination. The practice is applicable wherever systematic assessments of the competence of a nondestructive examination agency by a user or other party are desired. The specification states that “the authority (owner, engineer, architect, contractor, purchaser) may, at its discretion, inspect the procedures, equipment, and personnel program of the agency.”  ASTM E1212 and E1359- presents a practice for “Establishment and Maintenance of Quality Control Systems for Nondestructive Testing Agencies.” When using these practices to assess the capability of, or to accredit NDE agencies, ASTM Guide E 1359, “Standard Guide for Evaluating Capabilities of Nondestructive Testing Agencies” can be used. This guide establishes areas for review and provides a survey form that can be used in determining the competence of a nondestructive examination agency as well • The New ASNT Employer-Based Certification Program • An ASNT program that ensures NDT Service Providers and Inspection Agencies meet the minimum compliance with either SNT-TC-1A or CP-189 through the employer’s Written Practice• ASNT (ISQ) Industry Sector Qualification-The purpose of the ISQ program is to provide the oil and gas industry with NDT personnel who have demonstrated competency in the practical application of a specific technique through hands-on performance demonstration qualification examinations.• Links to relevant sourceshttps://www.asianweldingspecialist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Snyder-Feature-IT-Winter-0auditingNDTagencies-002.pdf  Guidelines for Auditing NDE Agencies https://www.asnt.org/MajorSiteSections/Accreditation/EBC_Program.aspx https://www.asnt.org/MajorSiteSections/About/ASNT_News/2020/ASNT_Launches_New_Accreditation_Program_for_NDT_Companies.aspx https://www.asnt.org/MajorSiteSections/Certification/ISQ.aspx https://www.api.org/products-and-services/individual-certification-programs/certifications/apiqute https://www.api.org/products-and-services/individual-certification-programs/certifications/apiqute#tab-exam-infoWelding-NDT-Quality Guru Podcast Thank you for listening to this episode.  If you like what your hearing, please do leave a comment or rating on the platform you may be listening from.
