Joining me today are the authors behind the book 'A Haunted History Of Invisible Women: True Stories of America's Ghosts' a book which explores sorrowful widows, vengeful jezebels, innocent maidens, wronged lovers, former slaves, even the occasional axe-murderess - America's female ghosts differ widely in background, class, and circumstance. Yet one thing unites them: their ability to instill fascination and fear, long after their deaths. A Haunted History of Invisible Women offers a unique lens on the significant role these ghostly legends play both within the spook-sseeking corners of our minds and in the consciousness of a nation. On September 1st 1922 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle published his book, The Coming of the Fairies. With this important anniversary month we are going to be looking at the Cottingley Fairies as well as examining the history of fairy folklore and the changes they have undergone both in terms of aesthetic and perception to explore their darker and more dangerous side.... How dangerous were fairies? In the late seventeenth century, they could still scare people to death. Little wonder, as they were thought to be descended from fallen angels, and to have the power to destroy the world itself. Such beliefs, along with some remarkably detailed sightings, lingered on well into the twentieth century. In today's episode I am joined by Dr Richard Sugg who wrote the book, 'Fairies: A Dangerous History' as we examine the associations fairies had with witchcraft and black magic, the dead and with ghosts and poltergeists.  Thank you for listening. Derby has a reputation for being a hotbed of ghostly goings on. Stories of ghostly activities span generations. In fact it’’s difficult to turn a corner in the city without hearing a nerve jangling tale of things that go bump in the night. And you don’t have to go too far to find one such tale. The old gaol in Friar Gate has a particularly gruesome past. Today, all that survives of the original gaol are its cells, which now form part of a working museum which tells the story of its grisly history. Opened in 1756 it replaced one in the Cornmarket and materials from that building were actually used in the construction of the Friar Gate Gaol, which was deliberately sited close to Nun's Green, a place where executions had traditionally taken place. Many a brutal execution took place in the prison, and many others died by other means such as illness and suicide.  Joining me today to discuss the history and hauntings of Derby Gaol is TV paranormal historian Richard Felix- the owner of Derby Gaol.  Thank you for listening. Internationally recognised, the historic floating hotel and museum attracts thousands of visitors every year. It has also attracted a number of unearthly guests over the years. In fact, some say the Queen Mary is one of the most haunted places in the world with as many as 150 known spirits lurking upon the ship. Over the past 60 years, the Queen Mary has been the site of at least 49 reported deaths, not to mention having gone through the terrors of war, so it comes as no surprise that spectral spirits of her vivid past continue to walk within her rooms and hallways. In today's episode we explore some of the history, the grandiosity and the ghostly tales that lurk on this magnificent and historic Grey Ghost. Thank you for listening. It is not hard to find ghost stories and accounts from people reporting paranormal activity from areas that lie deeper underground. These were often dangerous locations to work in and notorious for accidents and tragedy. They were also notorious for superstition and folklore. Alton in Hampshire, England, is home to a particular tragic and haunting story. A story that captured newspapers and imaginations at the time and would go on to create macabre words and phrases that are still used today but for whom few know the dark, etymological root.  In today's episode we step back into 1867 to explore a haunting Victorian crime that devastated a community- shadows of which may still be present today. It took its name from one Mary King, a merchant burgess who resided on the Close in the 17th century. The close has had a reputation for hauntings since at least the 17th century, with several paranormal investigations taking place- no surprise given some of the darker events and history that it bore witness too. A variety of ghosts are to be found in the houses, castle, inns, moors, lochs and ruins of Haunted Scotland. Scotland has always been a divided nation and its history is spattered with the blood of countless conflicts. Vestiges of Scotland's stormy past are to be found all over the country and nowhere is it more apparent than in the haunted, ruined castles of Scotland. These ruined fortresses - silent reminders of old and bitter conflicts - stud the Scottish landscape. From the gentle farmlands of the Central Lowlands to wild Empty lands of Europe's last great wilderness in the country's Northwest, Scotland's abandoned castles stand as sullen witnesses to centuries of conflict and bloodshed, and the ghosts that wander their timeworn corridors and historic rooms are perpetual reminders of a violent and stormy past. Behind the sombre walls of these impressive bastions, Kings and Queens, Lairds and Ladies, Highlanders and Lowlanders, the famous and the long forgotten, continue to inhabit an ethereal domain where old feuds and differences have never died, and where dastardly deeds and ancient discords occasionally cross the centuries to baffle and astonish those who happen to stumble upon their ghostly re-enactments. In today's episode we explore some of this stormy past and the ghost lore that survives it.... Thank you for listening. Death is something that shrouded Queen Victoria for most of her life- following her from childhood. Like many of her subjects, Victoria was caught up in the craze for spiritualism that swept the country during the early part of her reign. Buckingham Palace would be the setting for a number of seances and table turning experiments as psychics and mediums were presented to an enthusiastic monarch. The Reign of Terror was a period of the French Revolution from September 5, 1793, to July 27, 1794. With civil war spreading from the Vendée and hostile armies surrounding France on all sides, the Revolutionary government decided to make “Terror” the order of the day and to take harsh measures against those suspected of being enemies of the Revolution. A wave of executions followed.
