Lone Passage

In this two-part episode, we explore the living and livelihood options for refugees in Malaysia. In Part 2, we look at the complicated process of acquiring Refugee Status Determination and a UNHCR card, as well as the long, narrow road to resettlement. We examine what education opportunities are available for refugee children in Malaysia. We also look briefly at the grim situation in detention facilities, which is hard to report on due to lack of information and transparency. In this two-part episode, we explore the living and livelihood options for refugees in Malaysia. In Part 1, we look at shelter and living options for Unaccompanied Minor Refugees, including community fostering and reunification. We examine refugee and migrant living spaces in Malaysia and go back in history to explore Malaysia's role in the Vietnamese Boat Refugee crisis. We explore the dark and secretive world of human trafficking and human smuggling that goes hand-in-hand with the movement of refugees and migrants. In Part 2 of The Journey, we meet James and Sharifah, two refugees from Myanmar who arrived in Malaysia alone when they were minors. James is a Chin refugee who came to Malaysia when he was 15, and Sharifah is a Rohingya refugee who was brought to Malaysia by a smuggler when she was just 5 years old. Both came to Malaysia to escape persecution and violence in Myanmar, and to reunite with their long-lost families.
