We’ve all heard of bitcoin, but what is it really? For independent, registered investment advisors like ‘On Purpose’ host Tyrone Ross it’s … complicated. Since bitcoin isn’t considered an “investment” in the eyes of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), it’s different from what most investing professionals know. With the SEC differentiating “Digital asset securities” from less-regulated “digital assets,” what’s an advisor to do? According to Tyrone, “As far as crypto goes and advisors being fiduciaries, that is a whole different realm.”On Feb. 26, 2021, the SEC’s Division of Examinations (Division) issued a Risk Alert noting that “Digital Asset Securities” (i.e., assets issued and/or transferred using distributed ledger or blockchain technology, including, e.g., “virtual currencies,” “coins” and “tokens”) and other digital assets entail characteristics and risks that must be considered in designing a regulatory compliance program. In this episode of “On Purpose, With Tyrone Ross,”  Bryan Courchesne, managing director at Digital Asset Investment Management, and Max Schatzow,  counsel at Stark & Stark to registered investment advisors (RIAs), broker-dealers (BDs) and alternative funds, discuss the landscape of compliance for investment advisors concerning RAs and bitcoin.A message from Tyrone:The greatest number of people living in poverty are children. We need to change that. If you can, get involved and give back to NoKidHungry.org. Love and Light. I appreciate you!
With the value of all bitcoins issued surpassing the $1T mark for the first time, independent registered investment advisor Tyrone Ross digs into the seemingly ubiquitous, yet dubious metric. In this episode we explore more illuminating alternatives including “free float market cap”, “realized capitalization,” “MVRV, stock-to-flow,” network value to transactions ratio” and more.A message from Tyrone:The greatest number of people living in poverty are children, we need to change that. Is it wasteful to use electricity mining bitcoin? As the Biden Administration settles into power with an ambitious agenda around clean energy, notably promising to eliminate carbon emissions from the US power generation sector by 2035, the question of bitcoin mining and it's ever-growing use of energy bubbles up once more.In this episode of 'On Purpose, With Tyrone Ross,' Harry Sudock, VP of strategy at GRIID Infrastructure joins the show to discuss the modern energy landscape, how far we've come and where bitcoin mining can fit into a sustainable energy system.A message from Tyrone:The greatest number of people living in poverty are children, we need to change that. Is Bitcoin digital gold? In this episode of ‘On Purpose, With Tyrone Ross’, we dig into bitcoin narratives as financial advisors see them and explore the concept of bitcoin as a store of value.“Saying ‘Internet Money’… What else in my portfolio is like Internet Money? Hmmm…." said independent investment advisor and 'On Purpose' host Tyrone Ross, "but when you say 'Digital Gold', alright... Clients can wrap their heads around the digital part, they can wrap their heads around the gold part. They probably own gold in a portfolio already, and then you can get into asymmetric returns and uncorrelated to other assets in the portfolio… Bitcoin is mined and there’s gold mining…. You can start these basic frameworks for the advisor to understand and also make it accessible to clients.”A message from Tyrone:The greatest number of people living in poverty are children, we need to change that. On this episode of the 'On Purpose' podcast, independent registered investment advisor Tyrone Ross digs into the thorny topic of bitcoin and digital assets through the lens of your average Financial Advisor. As Tesla CEO Elon Musk adds "bitcoin" to his twitter biography and markets swing massively from bearish to bullish, what's a financial advisor to do to keep their clients happy without exposing their license and reputation to meaningful risk? What's the right balance and what can we really expect from the professionals managing or advising on trillions of dollars of wealth.A message from Tyrone:The greatest number of people living in poverty are children, we need to change that. Independent investment adviser Tyrone Ross speaks with Certified Financial Planners (CFP) Justin Castelli and Douglas Boneparth about how they're looking at bitcoin and what they're hearing from clients."My biggest concern is that things move too slowly," said Douglas Boneparth, "The horse is out of the barn. You now have advisers getting flak from their clients on 'why am I not here? You've been telling me you mined bitcoin in 2014 and you ... are generally positive about it. You've also been telling me you can't advise about it. ... And I don't want to hear about the SEC and regulations or other things. You're my adviser, should I have been advised on it?’ There's a tolerance here that other clients are going to have. If you tell them ‘no’ too many times, they're going to tell you ‘no’ by firing you. Right now that seems a little extreme, but if you pan out five or 10 years, you have time on your side to see something like bitcoin or crypto rise...""I don't have a lot of inbound demand," said Justin Castelli, "But I have a weekly email that I've refined and sent to clients. I'm going to start putting some information in there because I don't know how many of my clients realize i've spent a lot of time researching it, that I know about it, that I personally do some investing in it on my own. I want them to feel comfortable coming to me, knowing that I know about it.""But Interestingly enough," he continued, "Yesterday I was doing a review with a 58- and 59-year-old couple. They have a lot of cash, wondering, 'what can we do?', and they saw my StockTwits bitcoin, litecoin, ripple on [the wall of my office], and the wife said she'd heard about bitcoin and asked [me] about it. She was actually very interested in learning more because they have more than enough in equities. They're at a point now where they could afford to do this if they understand it. She's like, 'I really like the sound of this, I want to learn more.' Whether or not she actually does it, I don't know, but it was very interesting because you'd think it'd be my younger clients who get more excited about it but yesterday it was a retiree, a former teacher at that, who was interested in it."Advisors learn for free:The goal of Bitcoin for Advisors is to equip investment advisors with tools to better understand bitcoin, talk to their clients about bitcoin and to work bitcoin into their businesses.
