Who needs enemies?! The catty denizens of Lesley Castle (and “friends”!) take us through a tragically incomplete story, with guided detours by your hosts into the letter-writers’ educational background and some surprisingly salient parallels from women’s basketball.

Our next entry into Austen’s Juvenilia takes us a few years down the road into her teenagehood with “Jack and Alice,” a wild tale of neighborly debauchery, light stalking, and eventual murder (many such cases). We’ll also be talking colonialism and drag, because we have a brand and we intend to stick to it.

We're entering unexplored territory for both hosts as Lauren and Emily launch into Jane Austen's Juvenilia with "Frederic and Elfrida," written 1787. There's petty drama! There's attempted murder! There's a surprising amount of parallel to 2000s satire!

Catherine is seeing a little sunlight after the confrontation in a previous chapter, but conses are quencing elsewhere. There are choices and there are CHOICES, just like there's romancing and there's romanticizing...

You can't keep Catherine Morland down for long. Despite certain disappointments - and alarming developments - it's more important to remember that wishes do come true... While we talk about legal topics and early 2000s dramas, of course.

circle is expanding with characters new and old – plus we'll take you on

Catherine Morland makes a friend! Catherine Morland had better not even THINK of betraying that friend. We've got authorial tangents, boiled egg water, and infamous rom-com (not Gothic) betrayals in this second episode on Northanger Abbey.

We're starting our final novel with gusto! What exactly is the deal with Austen's first and last heroine, Catherine Morland, and why is she
unfit for the job (in her own opinion)?

I think for the rankings of love-interests, you need subcategories: self-proclaimed suitors (e.g. John Thorpe, Mr. Collins), characters that seem at first like real suitors but aren't (e.g. Willoughby, Wickham, Frank Churchill), and the ones the heroines end up marrying. I think Crawford is objectively awful (his goal, remember, is to make Fanny fall in love with him so he can break her heart), but can seem less awful because in the other choice is Edmund Bertram.
When I reread Northanger Abbey a few years ago I was struck by just how familiar John Thorpe was. We have all met his modern incarnation: the self-centered dude who doesn't hear the word "no" and doesn't understand how a woman could reject such a nice guy as himself.
FWIW, "Benwick" is pronounced "Bennick." The English do that kind of thing a lot with names: there's a pronunciation that you just have to know. My favorite is "Featherstonhaugh," which is pronounced (wait for it...) "Fanshaw."
I've now read a large chunk of the P&P/Parent Trap fanfic, and it's quite good! The author seems to really know the source material and adapts it well to a modern setting. She does seem to hew closer to "Lottie and Lisa" (the book on which Parent Trap was based) than to the movies.
Six degrees of Benedict Cumberbatch: he and Jon Lee Miller starred in a London stage play of Frankenstein (they played the parts Frankenstein and the monster, switching parts from show to show). Miller has played both Mr. Knightly (in the 2009 BBC adaptation of Emma) and Edmund Bertram (in the 1999 Mansfield Park). He also apparently played one of Fanny Price's little brothers (not William) in a 1983 adaptation of MP.
I don't think Knightley was really in love with Emma when she was 13. I think he's projecting his current feelings backward.
Mr. Knightley does not approve of punching down.
In Austen, charming men are nearly always bad news. The only one of her male protagonists who is charming is Henry Tilney (Wentworth is dashing, but not charming). Most of the charming men are villains, or, in the case of Frank Churchill, half a villain. Do not trust charming men! They are hiding something!
This episode really needed better editing.
I forget who it was who suggested to me the wrong but interesting idea that Marianne's mysterious illness is a miscarriage.
