Description
With over a third of our lives spent at work, not doing what we love for a living makes little sense. Yet so few do.
When asked, eight out of ten people said that they would not return to their places of work if they were given a million pounds.
How do we then bridge the gap between the two extremes: happy but broke at one end, wealthy but miserable at the other?
in modern times, is it really possible to enjoy meaningful, heart lifting work that also turns a decent wage or profit?
This is what we investigate.
Welcome to the Buddhist Millionaire Podcast.

It takes courage to follow the path of The Buddhist Millionaire, the path where you are pursuing work you love that turns, if not now, then one day, a decent wage or profit.
It is a path littered with obstacles, challenges and self doubt. Few begin the journey, fewer still stay on it long enough to reap the rewards that await all Heroes on the other side of the finish line.
This path is harder when it weaves through the saturated terrains of modern music, harder still when the artist hails from a place where genre music is little understood, let alone supported and encouraged.
Zodax, my guest today, is a true inspiration, the epitome of a Buddhist Millionaire. Life could not have put more obstacles in Zodax’s way, yet still he finds the courage, heart, tenacity and time to create and share his music, music that has made it to the top of my playlists, as I’m sure it will yours.

As a writer, it is impossible to overstate how much I value and respect the work of a comic.
Unforgiving, brutally honest, exposing and often thankless, stand-up comedy is a creative art rivaled by few. Add to the mix an environment where stand-up is still very much in its infancy, and you have all the ingredients for a life for which one must have a deep passion if they are to survive, let alone thrive.
Abbas Al Lawati is a man with such a passion. Omani born, he challenges himself and his craft to levels that would make many of us hyperventilate to think about.
This is a truly inspiring episode with fabulous insights, lessons and tips for everyone, regardless of their work or creative interests.
Ladies and gentleman, please welcome on to the stage…

Mike Cooper and I met when I discovered he was to be the 'voice' of the audio versions of my first two books, The Hardest Path and How to be a Buddhist Millionaire.
Mike is a British voice talent who swapped big city life in London for log cabin life in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.
He is recognisable from his many years on air with the BBC World Service, and as the narrator of countless television documentaries and a growing library of audiobooks. A disruptive influence in school, Mike's first break in narration came at age six, when his teacher realised he could tell the afternoon story better than her!
When he's not in his home studio, you'll find him enjoying hobby farm life and tending to some charming pet goats, three horses - including a delightful mini horse called Annie - and a growing hobby farm menagerie…
Enjoy.

As an author, I am all too familiar with the idea that conflict and contrast make engaging characters.
My guest today is not a character from a book, though as an international educator and teacher with an illustrious career she has read to and taught many to read and write. She is though, a living example of how conflict and contrast forge steadfast souls.
On first meeting Wendy Lennon, you might mistake her gentle ways as weakness, but as you come to know her, you quickly realise she is a woman of wisdom, compassion, strength and substance.
Her life story, nearly twenty years of it written in the Middle East where only the strongest seem to survive, is an inspiration.
This is a longer than usual podcast episode because, when you are fortunate enough to meet ‘elders’ like this, you want to soak up all you can.
Enjoy.

My guest today is David Shelley, CEO of Hachette UK, a publishing behemoth.
David is an anomaly. He is one of the rare few who run their ‘executive ships’ more like a Buddhist Millionaire than a ‘cut-throat suit’.
David came onto my radar when Hachette UK bought out ‘Short Books UK’ the company that published ‘How to be a Buddhist Millionaire- 9 practical steps to being happy in a materialist world.’
It was an end-of-year email sent to all Hachette staff and authors that made me realise not only was David not your typical ‘publishing boss’, but a one of a kind, considered, compassionate individual with both professional focus and a strong business moral code.
I didn’t expect the CEO of one of the largest publishing houses in the world to respond to my e-mail. Honestly, I thought a scary PA would intercept it and politely decline my podcast interview request on ‘Mr Shelley’s’ behalf.
I was wrong.
And this episode is the outcome.

Experience has taught me that ‘those who know rarely show’.
In a world filled with dogs whose barks are bigger than their bites, it is refreshing to stumble across a genuine high-level professional in their field.
Mastery of any kind takes persistence, dedication, commitment, and brutal amounts of hard work. The rewards for those who put in the effort are not only life-changing excellence (that benefits themselves and others) but also a sense of benevolence and subtly of character. My guest today is one of those rare breeds.
I met him when I walked into an MMA academy when first arriving in Oman. I have never been so warmly welcomed and only later found out, quite by chance, not only was he the owner of the academy, but a surgeon and UFC cage-side doctor too.
Dr. Aljulanda Al Maskari is a fascinating man with skills and knowledge that demand attention. But what makes him even more interesting is that you’d never know until someone came up behind you and whispered in your ear, ‘You know who that guy is, don’t you?’

Welcome back to a brand new season and episode of The Buddhist Millionaire Podcast (Season 4, episode 1).
We hope you had a wonderful summer break. Ours was busy. We moved house because Sheri starts a new Head-Teacher role at a new school an hour outside of Muscat, and I was away for a month on pilgrimage. We’ve come back to work for a rest!
Anyway, on to today’s show.
They say you can see the quality of a person’s character by the way they treat both the people who are less fortunate than themselves and animals.
My guest today, Sude Baykal, is a young woman with many admirable qualities. Two of those are a compassionate heart and the courage to run a small business. She is as good an example of a Buddhist Millionaire at the beginning of the journey as it is possible to find.

Episode one of The Buddhist Millionaire Podcast aired sixteen months ago amidst the dark days of COVID.
Initially, it was a way to extend conversations I’d begun in my book How to be a Buddhist Millionaire: 9 practical steps to being happy in a materialist world. A Buddhist Millionaire is the name I give to someone who dares to make an abundant living doing work they love.
Episode one soon gave way to episodes two, three, four… Before we knew it, we had aired an entire season. Now here we are at the conclusion of season three.
I am delighted to share today’s guest with you all.
I love all my guests, but none more so than Regis Lima. We met on the Jit Jitsu mats at the World Masters Championships in Vegas. We have been pen pals ever since.
Regis is an inspiration like no other. He is the epitome of Buddhist Millionaire-ship, an utter gentleman and a gift to the world.
If you have ever doubted yourself or thought your dreams were too outlandish and that you were too old to chase them, then this episode is defiantly (no, not a spelling mistake) for you.
Please take the time to like, comment and share this episode with someone you think might benefit. We need your help spreading the 'Buddhist Millionaire' word.
See you in season four.
Lots of love.

According to the Chinese zodiac, being a 1972 baby, my star sign is ‘Rat’.
They say, apparently, that a rat, when cornered, will fight tooth and nail for its freedom and safety.
In that regard, a ‘Rat’ is me down to a tee.
But I’m not proud of it.
I’ve always admired those who have an under-pressure instinct that tilts toward selflessness, kindness, generosity, understanding and peace rather than aggression.
I’ve discovered that the very best ‘Buddhist Millionaires’ have a tendency toward the noble art of compassion and they are not afraid to wear their hearts on their sleeves.
My guest today, Pat Rullo, is one of those people I aspire to be more like.
Having faced hardship, she hasn’t resorted to the shows of strength and power so often displayed when one is afraid, but used her courage to help, support and ‘Speak Up’ for others.
This is a special show with a very special human being. Please take the time to listen, share it with those you think will benefit and help us spread the ‘Buddhist Millionaire’ word.
Until next time.
Lots of love.

Positively Infectious: if these were the only two words I could use to describe today’s guest, by the end of this episode, I bet you’d agree.
In a world that can often seem increasingly divisive and cynical, Chris Hanson is a ray of light. But don’t underestimate him; he is as potentially dangerous as he is thoughtful, well studied and compassionate.
During the day, he is a full-time schoolteacher; ‘after hours’ he is a committed martial artist and content creator who spends untold efforts trying to unite divided communities.
I have had the great privilege and good fortune of speaking to many people who live their lives ‘doing what they love and making it pay’. The very best of them enjoy fascinating and varied lives; Chris is no exception.
He and I get into a ton of different things in this extended episode, and I’m certain there is a little nugget of wisdom for everyone.
As ever, we hope you enjoy this episode and that it benefits your life.
Please take the time to share it with someone you think might benefit and help us spread the ‘Buddhist Millionaire’ word.
Until next time.

I often think that a great way to ‘judge a person’ (I know we shouldn’t judge, but we are all deciding about people and things whether or not we like to admit it), is to look at the happiness in the faces of those that surround them.
The people who hang out with today’s guest are very often smiling. He is a chiropractor, podcaster, business owner, deep thinker and both a coach and multi medal winning Jiu Jitsu player. Seemingly every one who comes into contact with him walks away feeling blessed and moved by his wisdom and positivity.
I hope you all, one day, get the chance to meet the fabulous Dr. Jason Shields in person, but, until then, take a seat, grab a tea, press play and be inspired.

To find someone as interesting and generous with their wisdom as Kris Wilder is difficult. Every time I speak to him, listen to or read his words, I learn something new.
Kris is one of the most eclectic men I know. In his time he has been a political and public affairs consultant, part of legislative staff, a Franciscan Friar, a member of the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame and author of seventeen books. His views and ideas, shaped from hard earned experience, are far-reaching and deep.
But beyond that, and maybe, probably, because of it, Kris is one of the ‘Good Guys’. If it sounds like I’m gushing, it’s because I am, and I do so without apology.
I know you’ll get as much from listening to Kris as I do chatting with him.
This is one for the ages.
Enjoy.

‘You don’t get if you don’t ask’ is a sentiment close to any Buddhist millionaire’s heart. When today’s guest, Simon Morrell, messaged to ask to come on the show, it made us smile. We love this sort of gumption, after-all, it’s the sort of proactive attitude that leads to success.
Simon and I had never met, we'd only vaguely floated around the same ‘martial arts communities’ on social media before. As the team and I went about our research, we discovered that not only was he a martial arts teacher, but an author and screenplay writer, too. Simon is a fascinating multi-faced human being; a prime example of a Buddhist millionaire.
I enjoyed this interview like no other. It was fun, revelatory, and proof that, if willing, ‘strangers’ can quickly become friends.

When my guest today walks into a room, you feel it. He has presence, something different about him that commands attention. It’s difficult to decide whether it’s the way he looks, what he has to say, or the way he says it. Either way, it’s near impossible not to listen.
Veren Riki Warren is an educator, sports therapist, strength and performance coach, author, and a world record holder. He is also the founder of ‘Body Weight Gurus’, a health business that provides holistic fitness programmes that expertly blend the ancient with the modern.

My guest today is magic. Literally.
Romany Romany (no, I haven’t made a mistake!) is a world class, headlining female magician.
The ‘Diva of Magic’ has previously won the World Magic Awards in Las Vegas, been the Magic Circle Stage Magician of the Year, and featured on the hit TV show: Penn & Teller, ‘Fool Us’.
TIME OUT Magazine once described Romany as: “...a flamboyant hybrid of Bette Midler and Mary Poppins... a fascinating razzle dazzle mix of magic, comedy and intelligent glamour...”
If all that were not enough stuffed rabbits inside her hat, so to speak, Romany is also a spectacularly gifted writer.
I initially picked up Romany’s book, ‘Spun into Gold’, to flick through as research for this interview. The gorgeous prose and heart pulling story that lay waiting for me inside was as unexpected as it was hypnotizing. 'Spun into gold' has become one of my top five ever reads.
Anthony Owens, Producer of Derren Brown TV, said this of the book: “Bold, brave and beautiful. This book might just change your life. Romany is handing you her sunlight. Take it.”
This episode has been one of my favorite to record to date. The more times I listen to what Romany has to say, the more I get out of it.
She’ll work her magic on you, too. You’ll see…
As ever, we hope you enjoy this episode.

‘Don’t seek to walk in the footsteps of masters, seek what they sought.’
In a world of instant gratification where almost everyone claims to be an ‘expert’, it is rare, like gold dust, to find yourself in the presence of an authentic Master.
My guest in this episode is Akemi Lucas, better known by her artist name Koshu.
Koshu is a Japanese calligraphy Master and sumi painter. Born in Japan, she embarked on her journey in calligraphy at eight under the tutelage of Master Seizan Fujimoto. You can trace her lineage back to the well-known calligrapher of the Meiji period, Meikaku Kusakabe.
When in the presence of Koshu and her work, you are as close to the most pristine example of Buddhist Millionairship as it is possible to be. As with all bona fide Masters, their work helps one understand the truth of transcendence; to see life, almost literally, through the eyes of God.
This is a very special episode with a very special guest.
As ever, we hope you enjoy it.

There is more than one way to be a Buddhist Millionaire.
For example, some like to chase passions like a bull in a china shop; throwing themselves in head first, creating mayhem as they fly a carpet of faith, blindfolded, hoping it will all work out in the end (much to the chagrin of those closest to me, I’m one of those!)
Some, thankfully, enjoy their passions in a much more measured way.
On one hand, they commit to fulfilling the responsibilities that keep their feet firmly planted on ground zero. On the other, they chase their desires with no less passion, or success, than the maverick.
Given your temperament, both ways to the summit of ‘Mount Buddhist Millionaire’ are equally effective. But if you are the sort of person who wants to experience life in technicolour while living within the boundaries of ‘reality’, this episode with Scott Fereday is for you.
As ever, we hope you love this episode.

Not so long ago, you’d be forgiven for not knowing that ‘content creators’ were a ‘thing’.
Nowadays, most of us are not surprised that not only are ‘content creators’ prolific, but so too is the content they create. It stands to reason that, eventually, these online ‘artists’ would need managing like every other entertainer that preceded them.
Enter Andrew Phillips, this episode’s special guest.
Cool, humble and instantly likeable, Andrew would not approve of my ‘tag line’ to describe him and his work: Content Guru to the Stars!
Instead, wrist slapped, I’ll use the more classy version from his website: a content manager with a proven track record of creating and producing award-winning content with compelling narratives that engage with users
Irrespective of how you describe his work, he is a fascinating man with experience to share and the generosity of heart to do so, true Buddhist Millionaire qualities.
This was one of my favourite episodes to date. I hope you enjoy listening every bit as much as I enjoyed my time chatting with him.
As ever, I hope you love this episode, and please take the time to share it with someone you think might benefit.

What better way to kick off 2022 and season three of The Buddhist Millionaire Podcast than with a rising star.
In this first episode of a brand new season, we speak to Oxford University Graduate and Karate Black Belt (and much more besides), Lewis Jones, about the early stages of the Buddhist Millionaire journey.
Lewis is a positive, focused and determined young man who shows us all that age doesn’t matter when setting out to sculpt who you want to be, do and have.
His example is inspiring for both young and older alike (not to mention parents, I’ll think you’ll love this episode.)
My favourite of Lewis’ ‘wisdoms’ came during a drink break in a karate session that I was teaching where we were discussing how martial arts, beyond the skills of fighting, help us grow as individuals:
“If I can trust myself to do a hundred pushups,’ said Lewis, "then I can trust myself to finish a piece of homework."
Wise words indeed. There are plenty more in this episode.
Until next time.
Lots of love.

Wow! How did we get here? It only seems like yesterday that episode one of The Buddhist Millionaire Podcast aired and here we are at the conclusion of season two.
Thank you all so much for listening, liking and sharing the episodes and helping make the podcast a global success (we now air in 43 countries in 6 continents- only the penguins are listening in the 7th)
Ok, let’s get onto today’s amazing guest: Alice Crawford.
Any of you remember the 1985 film 'White Knights' staring Gregory Hines and Mikhail Baryshnikov? You can look it up online if you haven’t, but it was a movie that mixed martial arts and ballet.
Ever since that film, as a lifelong martial artist, I’ve been fascinated with the focus, fearlessness and ferocity of ballerinas. You think you train hard? Step into a dance studio and try ballet for a week.
At first glance, you could easily mistake Alice as small, weak, timid. Seconds in her company, though, reveal a certain sparkle in her eye; in minutes you’ll notice a lithe power in her movements; hours later you’ll realise you are spending time with one of the most fearless humans you are ever likely to meet.
The late Princess Diana referred to Alice as her ‘Favourite Ballerina’, while her talents inspired an adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic ‘Alice in Wonderland’, in which she played the eponymous lead role.
There is a ton of stuff to get your teeth into in this episode. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed hosting. Please take a moment to share it with someone you think might benefit.
Until next time.
Lots of love.
