On January 15, 1947, a gruesome discovery was made in a vacant lot in south Los Angeles. It was the nude body of a young woman, severed into two pieces at the waist. She would soon be identified as Elizabeth Short, but in what has gone down as one of the most famous unsolved murders in L.A. history, she will forever be known as The Black Dahlia. Many cultures across the globe and throughout history believe that the human soul, doesn't ascend to some higher plain of being, but actually becomes reborn in a new human body. In this episode I tell you some of the history of reincarnation, and of some of the more chilling cases in which an individual has claimed to have live before. When photography was first invented back in the 19th century, it launched a number of people to find new ways to innovate and expand the craft. One photographer in particular who did something unique, was William Mumler. He was an amateur chemist, engraver and portrait photographer, who promised to give his customers something they couldn't get anywhere else--a photo of themselves with the ghost of a dead loved one. On December 4, 1872, the British Brigantine The Dei Gratia found another ship floating abandoned in the ocean. The entire crew had mysteriously vanished, leaving untouched meals on the table, and no clear sign where they could have gone. The name of that ship was the Mary Celeste. In this episode, I tell you the story of long-forgotten serial killer Lizzie Halliday. During the late 19th century, she became well-known for murdering several of her husbands, among others. For many of us, it may be difficult to recall a time when every consumable product didn't have a product safety seal on it. But those tamper proof packages all stem from a very real series of unsolved murders in Chicago in 1982. Back then, someone laced several bottles of Extra Strength Tylenol with Potassium Cyanide and distributed them in stores throughout Chicago. As a result, seven people died, and the murderer was never caught. Some stories you come across are so tragic and outrageous, it's difficult to believe they could really happen in modern society. On July 9, 1982, a French-born 14 year old girl living in Germany named Kalinka Bamberski died under mysterious circumstances. This would lead her father Andre to spend the next three decades on a tireless quest to uncover the truth, and to bring the man who raped and murdered his daughter to justice. Back in 1880, a tiny island off the coast of Chile became the site of one of the last witch trials in South America. The defendants who were rounded up told a horrific tale of black magic, extortion and murder. At first, I rolled my eyes when I saw this episode. Really?! Another one about the Aspirin murders? How original! But I was pleasantly surprised. This is about the original poisonings, not the copycats. And it discusses a book written by a pharmaceutical whistleblower, who posits how the crime may have been donetr by a worker in the company-- not a random outsider.

I've heard many podcasts about the Mary Celeste, but this one is the best IMHO because it offers plausible theories about why her crew disappeared. Other podcasts like to focus more on superstition and paranormal theories.
