Today we do not have a special meal to serve. No new myths or cryptids or urban legends to fill the minds and satiate the imagination of our wonderful patrons. No, today we have a message of love and appreciation. Today we say good-bye. In this episode, we recount the meals we've cooked up, the laughs and struggles we've had along the way, and what the experience has meant for your hostesses. We thank you for the love and support you've shown our quirky little restaurant over the past year and a half. It has been an honor to serve you. Remember, no matter how you slice it, you're awesome, and we love you. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Ashley’s final Story by the Slice dives into some wild tales about animals on meth to determine what’s fact and what’s fiction. Should you be worried about methed out alligators? Are attack squirrels raised on a steady diet of methamphetamine an actual thing? There’s only one way to find out…unless you want to do the research yourself, but we think this dish is pretty tasty. This month, we are joined by the incredible Elyse of the True Crime Cat Lawyer podcast. She served up one of her favorite local treats, the Bear Lake Monster. Reports of this creature have been around for well over one hundred years, but the sightings vary dramatically in their descriptions. Whether real or fictional, we LOVED everything about this bizarre being, and we know you will too! This dish contains disturbing content and listener discretion is strongly advised prior to consumption. The tokoloshe is a teeny, tiny, terrible tormentor of peoples across South Africa. The little being, who has been treated as a joke by much of the Western world, is thought to be a very real threat to the region. Tied to everything from theft and fires to assault and death, this creature seems to exist only to cause trouble. But the truth behind the tokoloshe and what it means for many may be darker than the creature itself. A racist past, a violent present, a scape goat, and a witch hunt. Don't mess with the tokoloshe. Ashley serves up the sweet release of death as the starter course for our South African triptych. After a brief sampling of the country’s history, it’s time to dig in to search out the origins of death with the Bantu myth about the chameleon and the lizard. It turns out sometimes procrastination has some pretty serious consequences, but we promise, even if this is your last meal, it’s a dish worth dying for. Cults are not always sinister. Similarly, cult leaders are not always manipulative sociopaths. Sometimes, all they need is one deluded man. August Engelhardt, born with a silver spoon, was many things, and one of them was delusional, something he shared with other cults and their leaders. You might wonder the peculiarities of Engelhardt’s delusion. It is nothing other than the obsessive yet interesting relationship he developed with the fruit with one of the hardest shells. This is a man that decided to give everything up for a life of nudity and a diet consisting of nothing other than coconuts. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

SBTS #13 Well, Fork Me

In this week’s Story By The Slice, Ashley serves up the history of the fork, and while this might sound like a boring dish, we promise that you’ll find plenty of unexpected and flavorful fun packed into this sweet little slice. While the idea of eating with your hands may seem like poor table manners to us today, it turns out it wasn’t as long ago as you might think that this was not only the norm, it was actually considered vain to do otherwise. Lindsay closes out our culinary tour of France with urban legends and ghostly tales sure to please the palate. Our apéritif is the haunting parallels between the Phantom of the Opera and the real-life Palais Garnier, then the murderous tales of an Abbey in Normany — Mortemer Abbey. Our petit fours end the evening with the sad tale of Charlotte at Château de Brissac. Murder, murder and more murder? That’s so French. A vicious creature with a taste for human flesh roamed the countryside of France for three years, between 1764 and 1767. Known as the Beast of Gévaudan, or La Bête du Gévaudan, this animal was described as appearing to be like everything from a wolf or dog to a hyena or lion. What began as attacks on chattel herders in a quiet corner of the nation quickly became a national sensation. Supposedly, the beast was possessed of supernatural powers and could decapitate its victims, then drink their blood. Hundreds of documented attacks occurred during this period, and neither soldiers nor the best hunters in the land could stop them. Theories abound of what or who could have been the culprit. Was it a werewolf? A serial killer? An exotic animal? Or something more familiar? We can only speculate, as its identity was never confirmed.
