Description

My name is Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss. My goal as a Torah educator is not merely to teach my students my OWN hashkafah. Rather, my goal is to equip them with the foundations, the methodological training, and the tools which will enable them to arrive at their OWN understanding of Judaism and cultivate their OWN relationship with Hashem and His Torah. This podcast is devoted to the shiurim I give which are geared specifically towards that end. As such, the range of topics covered here will be diverse. There will be shiurim on Jewish philosophy, Chumash methodology, aggadic midrashim, maybe even some non-Jewish philosophy as well. Merriam-Webster defines "laboratory" as a place providing opportunity for experimentation, observation, or practice in a field of study. I call this podcast "Machshavah Lab" because this is where we will conduct Torah "experiments" by exploring questions, texts, and ideas in an effort to develop our machshavah in a "hands on," exploratory, firsthand manner.

Q&A #38: Shefoch, Split-Hallel, Babies, Begin w/Degradation, Baruch ha'Makom, Haggadah MethodologyLength: 1 hour 3 minutesSynopsis: This morning (4/18/24), in our pre-Pesach women's Q&A, we took up six questions: (1) What's the deal with the "shefoch chamasecha" intro to Hallel? (2) Why do we interrupt Hallel at the seder with the meal? (3) The focus of the seder should be young children, but what can be done for babies? (4) Series of questions on the halacha that our telling of the story of the Exodus should "begin with degradation and end with praise." (5) What is the idea that "Baruch ha'Makom" is a quasi-birkas ha'Torah? (6) What is the methodology for learning the Haggadah? Since this was a Q&A, the answers I gave were partial and not based on comprehensive research. Still, we managed to take a few nice steps for each of these questions, and now we have plenty to think about! Please feel free to leave your questions, insights, and feedback in the comments! Rabbi Yosef B. The Whore in the Haggadah

Length: 1 hour 35 minutesSynopsis: This evening (4/18/24), in lieu of our usual Thursday night women's Pirkei Avos shiur, we decided to do a deep dive into one of the most cryptic derashos in the Haggadah: the drashah on the phrase "and numerous," which quotes a pair of perplexing pesukim from Sefer Yechezkel. We raise a few questions, familiarize ourselves with Chazal's interpretation, raise a few more questions, read through the entire perek, and attempt to formulate an answer. Did we succeed in answering all of our questions? No. But I'm pretty sure we arrived at SOME insight, and steps we took will give you plenty to think about. At the very least, I can guarantee you that you'll never look at this part of the Haggadah in the same way again!-----מקורות:הגדה של פסח: ארמי אובד אבייחזקאל פרק טזרש"י - יחזקאל טז:אבראשית מז:כזשמות א:ט,יבדברים י:כבתהלים קה:כג-כדרש"י - שמות יב:ו-----The Torah content from now through Pesach has been sponsored by the Koffsky family, in loving memory of Adira (a"h), who loved big ideas and asking big questions.-----If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Length: 1 hour 25 minutesSynopsis: This evening (4/4/24), in lieu of our usual Thursday night women's Pirkei Avos shiur, we decided to prepare ourselves for the upcoming solar eclipse of April 8, 2024 by learning through enough key sources to develop an authentically "Jewish" framework for our eclipse experience. We began by examining the mitzvah to study the eclipse and examined the greatest model among the Rishonim of someone who devoted his life to this mitzvah. Next, we compared and contrasted Judaism's orientation towards eclipses with the idolatrous view. In the main part of the shiur we focused on the problematic statements of Chazal which explicitly identify eclipses as bad omens. We talked about our preferred methodology of learning aggadic passages such as these, and we applied these methodologies to the first of these statements. We concluded by translating what we learned into a practical way to gain the most from the upcoming eclipse. This was an impromptu shiur, but I hope you find it as thought-provoking as I did!-----מקורות:Bernard R. Length: 1 hour 16 minutesSynopsis: This evening (3/28/24), in our Thursday night Pirkei Avos shiur for women, we began learning the next mishnah which is about humility - or, to be precise, "extreme lowliness of spirit." We started learning through the Rambam's lengthy commentary, which is essentially a treatise on humility, but because this required us to do an overview of the Rambam's entire approach to character traits in Hilchos Deios, we only made it through the first two paragraphs of his commentary here. We had a good review and got some nice insights, but there is much, much more to be said about being very, very humble. To be continued! Length: 1 hour 18 minutesSynopsis: This evening(3/14/24), during our regularly schedule Pirkei Avos shiur for women, we instead embarked on an exciting Purim-related journey. As is his style, the Ralbag concludes sections of his Biblical commentaries with "toalos" (a.k.a. lessons) in halacha, middos, and philosophical ideas which he gleans from the text. He concludes Megilas Esther with 51 such lessons. Tonight, we began learning through them! The most obvious goal was to learn the particular ideas he aimed to teach, but our larger goal was to learn his derech (methodology) in extracting these lessons from the text. Those who attended the shiur were just as surprised as I was the first time I learned through these lessons. Let's just say that this is NOT how you were taught Megilas Esther in Jewish day school. We plan to continue tomorrow, and hopefully finish all of them before Purim!-----מקורות:רלב"ג - הקדמה לתורהרלב"ג - אסתר, תועלות א-ידרלב"ג - אסתר א:יריטב"א - מועד קטן דף כח עמוד ארש"י - בראשית כא:יבמגילה דף יב עמוד א-ברש"י - מגילה ב:זMenachem Kellner, "Torah in the Observatory: Gersonides, Maimonides, Song of Songs" p.304-----This week's Torah content has been sponsored by the Fischbeins (who enjoy reading the sponsorship messages every week) in honor of Chen and Max's wedding and with a tefilah for lasting peace in Israel.-----If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Length: 37 minutesSynopsis: This morning (2/15/24), in our Q&A, we took up three questions, in what turned out to be the most important Q&A of the 2023-2024 year thus far: (1a) What role should guilt play in our lives and (1b) how should we deal with it? (2) What strategies can we use to strengthen our attachment to and observance of halacha? and (3) How do you know whether a change in your behavior is a result of the temporary circumstances or is indicative of a more substantial change?
