Welcome to Episode 44 of The Art of Aging Mindfully Podcast  where I discuss "The Art of Ashtanga Yoga." In this episode, I take you along my personal journey with Ashtanga Yoga, a practice that's spanned over two decades and continues to teach me every day.We kick off with the fascinating history of Ashtanga Yoga, exploring the lineage from Sri K. Pattabhi Jois to T. Krishnamacharya, all the way back to Ramamohana Brahmachari. Their contributions have shaped Ashtanga into the transformative practice we know today.I then delve into the practice and technique of Ashtanga Yoga, painting a vivid picture of the tranquil Mysore sessions, the resonating sound of Ujjayi breath, and the methodical step-by-step learning process. We look at the powerful combination of breath, bandha, and drishti, and the dynamic transitions of jumping back and through. A path as demanding as Ashtanga Yoga is not without its obstacles. I share my struggles with late nights, battling old habits, and maintaining discipline.  But despite these obstacles, I discuss how the Ashtanga community remains interconnected on a global scale, citing examples from AYV, AYB, and AYNY.Next, I share my insights on what full devotion to a practice like Ashtanga feels like. From prioritizing practice first thing in the morning to observing the character-building effects of consistent practice, I delve into the profound impact of such commitment. I speak about the respect and admiration we can have for fellow practitioners, acknowledging their focus and consistency. Finally, I discuss my "Second Study" of Ashtanga Yoga that began on January 1st, 2023. This new chapter has taught me to listen to my body more intently and approach the practice with patience. Welcome, mindful agers, to Episode 43 of The Art of Aging Mindfully Podcast. Today, we're delving deep into yoga philosophy to uncover how understanding and practicing a key yogic concept can lead to meaningful behavior change.Start of The Vritti Samskara Chakra Presentation: 17:12Introduction to Vritti-Samskara-ChakraWe start off by laying some groundwork, explaining the  Sanskrit concepts of vritti, samskara, and chakra. Although they may initially seem esoteric, I assure you that they have practical, day-to-day implications for how we live and change our behaviors.Unpacking VrittiWe dive into the concept of vritti - the modifications or fluctuations of the mind. Understanding vrittis can give us deeper insight into how our thoughts, emotions, and perceptions shape our daily experiences.Understanding SamskaraFrom vrittis, we move onto the idea of samskara. These are latent imprints from past experiences that influence our behaviors, reactions, and habits. I share some personal examples to help illustrate this concept.Exploring the Meaning of ChakraEven though the chakra system doesn't feature prominently in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, it's a core aspect of certain yoga traditions. I provide a brief introduction to this energy system and discuss how it could be influenced by our vrittis and samskaras, to create a repeating mental pattern. Vritti-Samskara-Chakra and Behavior ChangeOnce we understand these concepts, we explore how they can inform behavior change. I talk about how samskaras can create recurring vrittis, leading to deeply ingrained patterns, and how understanding this process can help us break free from unhelpful cycles.Yoga Practices for Behavior ChangeIn the latter part of the episode, we turn to specific yoga practices that can help us lighten the load of our past, reducing the influence of our samskaras, and making space for healthier patterns. I discuss various techniques from asana practices to pranayama, from meditation and mindfulness to mantra chanting, and even the study of sacred texts.Closing ThoughtsWe wrap up with some final reflections on the transformative potential of these practices. Through understanding and working with our vrittis and samskaras, and harnessing the wisdom of yoga, we can replace outdated and unhealthy tendencies with more resourceful and healthier ways of being.Thank you for joining me for this enlightening episode. I always welcome your feedback and questions. Welcome back, dear listeners, to episode 41 of The Art of Aging Mindfully Podcast. I'm your host, Jai Sugrim, and today I want to delve into an important topic, one I've titled "The Question AI is Asking Us."In these transformative times, we are witnessing an unprecedented acceleration of technological advancement, specifically in artificial intelligence (AI). As we move forward, I propose we use AI's computational power as a mirror, reflecting the most authentic versions of ourselves back to us. We can do this by analyzing our personal data in a health-oriented way.Our data, detached from emotions, stands unbiased and non-judgmental. It doesn't care about our feelings, it doesn't favor a narrative; it's just raw, objective information. By assessing this data, we can gain unique insights about our physical and mental health, allowing us to work on specific areas of improvement. With AI as our tool, we can continue to evolve and grow alongside it, utilizing its objectivity to answer the age-old question: "Who am I?" In reality, we are all beings of body, mind, and spirit, a unique fusion of the material and the ethereal. There's an enchanting possibility that consciousness isn't secondary to matter but is rather primary, and from it, matter arises. If so, then all of matter, including us and the AI we develop, might be imbued with consciousness. We are more connected to our world and to each other than we've ever realized.Let's embrace this journey of co-evolution with AI. Let's seize the opportunity to know ourselves deeper than ever before. Let's harness the computational power of AI to get healthier, clearer, and wiser. Stay tuned, and as always, keep aging mindfully. To support The Art of Aging Mindfully  Podcast go to patreon:The Art of Aging Mindfully Podcast PatreonThe Art of Aging Mindfully Podcast is sponsored by Viome, Acorn Biolabs and Whoop, your personal digital fitness tracker. To Harvest Your Own Stem Cells, for Future Use, with Acorn Biolabs:https://www.acorn.me/affiliate/the-art-of-aging-mindfullyTo test your full body and gut intelligence with Viome:http://viomehq.sjv.io/eKnAO1Use The $110 discount code: ARTOFAGINGOrder your whoop strap with Jai's Unique Link:https://join.whoop.com/376818To train with Jai, and learn about his yoga classes and massage therapy treatments:https://theartofagingmindfully.com/

Welcome to the podcast folks, I'm your host, Jai Sugrim, and I am incredibly excited to share with you Episode 37 of The Art of Aging Mindfully Podcast. This episode offers an intimate glance into my private coaching calls and a deep-dive into a truly healing conversation with my client, Robert R. This exchange provides a precious opportunity for us to explore the intersection of spiritual matters and practical aspects of yoga in our daily lives. The conversation begins at: 26:11Robert, like many of us, is juggling a demanding full-time office job alongside an ambitious yoga asana training program. While enthusiasm for personal growth and development is commendable, it's important that we balance ambition with reality and ensure our practices are both nourishing and sustainable. As we traverse this journey together, Robert and I discover that sometimes, the greatest act of self-care can be to scale back and adjust our expectations, allowing for greater harmony in our lives.Throughout our conversation, we delve deep into yoga philosophy. We discuss how spiritual teachings can enlighten our understanding of personal boundaries and energy management. Yoga, in its holistic sense, is not just about the asanas; it is a way of life that guides us to live mindfully and with greater consciousness. In this episode, you'll witness firsthand the nuances of a coaching relationship. You'll experience the delicate balance between challenge and compassion, the dance between pushing for growth while still maintaining reverence for one's current state of being. In this real-time coaching call, you'll witness us reconfigure Robert's yoga asana training program, ensuring that it complements his lifestyle rather than competes with it. We spend a considerable amount of time dissecting what's not working, brainstorming solutions, and crafting a more sustainable, supportive, and achievable yoga routine for him.In addition to this practical advice, we discuss larger spiritual themes related to the practice of yoga and mindful aging. We contemplate how the yoga philosophy can inform our perspective on work-life balance and personal growth, ultimately guiding us towards a more serene and fulfilled existence.Remember, balance is the essence of a mindful life. As we age, it is important to honor our bodies, respect our boundaries, and cultivate a deeper sense of self-awareness and acceptance. Our journey on the mat is not just about achieving the next pose; it's about understanding our own bodies, minds, and spirits.Thank you for joining me for Episode 37 of The Art of Aging Mindfully Podcast. Welcome to the pod Folks! On Episode 30 I talk about the difficulty in Identifying a true expert! In today's world, it can be difficult to find a true expert for several reasons:Overload of information: With the internet and social media, we have access to an overwhelming amount of information. It can be difficult to separate the true experts from those who are simply presenting themselves as experts.Limited attention span: In a world where we are constantly bombarded with information, many people have limited attention spans. They may not have the time or patience to seek out true experts and may rely on superficial sources of information instead.Misinformation: Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation out there, and it can be difficult to distinguish between what is true and what is not. This can make it difficult to identify true experts and can lead to confusion and mistrust.Lack of regulation: In some fields, there is a lack of regulation and oversight, which can make it easier for people to present themselves as experts without actually having the necessary knowledge and experience.Bias and personal agendas: Even when someone is presenting themselves as an expert, they may have biases or personal agendas that can affect their recommendations and advice.Overall, it can be difficult to find a true expert in today's world because of the overwhelming amount of information, limited attention spans, misinformation, lack of regulation, and biases and personal agendas. However, with careful research and discernment, it is still possible to identify true experts and benefit from their knowledge and expertise. When looking for an expert look for a handful of traits:10 Characteristics of a True ExpertCredentials Experience Continuous LearningClear CommunicationCritical ThinkingHumility PassionCuriosity, or the pursuit of continuous learningAbility to Innovate and IntegrateDeep Knowledge The Art of Aging Mindfully Podcast is sponsored by WHOOP, your personal digital fitness tracker: Order your whoop strap with Jai's Unique Link:https://join.whoop.com/376818To train with Jai, and learn about his yoga classes and massage therapy treatments:www.theartofagingmindfully.comTo support this podcast go to patreon:patreon.com/jaisugrimEnjoy and share this episode!May it bring You Insight!
