Description
The Elephants in the Room is a podcast hosted by two friends from South East London, Moe and Marns, creating a space for frank, relevant and fun conversations about the things that are often difficult to talk about. The name makes reference to the Elephant and Castle shopping centre, a landmark of South London which defines both their experiences of growing up, but it also points to the kind of conversations the podcast will open up. You can expect all sorts of taboos, spanning the serious to the hilarious. From politics to dating; from grad jobs to race, we’ve got you covered. You’re invited to join the conversation. Follow us on instagram @the.elephantsintheroom and listen out for new episodes every 2 weeks.

In our final episode of season 1, we’re talking all things romance, dating and relationships. When we entered the first lockdown in 2020, many parts of our lives moved online. While the days of zoom quizzes seem to be over (thankfully) some online activities seem to be here to stay, like online dating. While many used apps like Hinge, Tinder and Bumble before the pandemic, the lockdown has accelerated the usage of online dating sites, with messaging on Tinder increasing by 52% globally between March and April 2020. What’s the good, the bad, the ugly, and the reality of online dating? Is it realistic to try and find a significant other by traditional means, or is dating online simply a necessary evil we all need to get on board with? Join us for our season finale, as we discuss our experiences of dating (or not!) in the pandemic.
In our next episode, we are discussing THAT interview. Forget the gossip and the speculation, we want to think about the wider implications of the interview and why it resonated with so many people. Whether you disagree with the decision to do the Oprah interview in the first place, or you are Meghan and Harry’s biggest fans, the interview raised a lot of real and important issues that we want to unpack: Why are certain women vilified by the media? To what extent should the press be regulated, and how? Are the Royal Family close to being obsolete? Tune in and join us as we aim to have a productive conversation about the interview that has caused so much havoc. School is something many of us have in common. It’s where we are educated and prepped for the real world. But what did we actually learn there? Maybe it was bunsen burners in science, or ‘Scratch’ in ICT, or learning to make a box for your desk in Design Technology… we all have memories of school lessons, but in this episode, we want to delve a little deeper into the school curriculum in the UK, what it consists of, and how useful it is. Join us as we throw it back to our time together in school, think about what we learnt, and consider how effective school teaching is.Recommendations:Stance Podcast: Class Ceiling in the Arts, Jessie Ware, Hofesh Shechter. https://open.spotify.com/episode/5BAMAZ1SrxjXtq6XZ6w8Om?si=Z8ZJWMCXTguTC_HKuerbUQThe Black Curriculum - https://theblackcurriculum.com/A Black History of Art - https://www.instagram.com/ablackhistoryofart/?hl=enWide Sargasso Sea, by Jean Rhys
Are the graduates of 2020-21 going to be “the stuck generation”? According to the UK-based graduate jobs website, Milkround, 18% of graduates are securing jobs this year compared to the typical 60%. Covid has had a huge impact on the job prospects of many young people, especially 16-24-year-olds, and support from universities and government seems limited. What does it mean to graduate in this whirlwind of a year and in the years to come, as we see the world of work transformed by the global pandemic? Join us as we share anecdotes of job searching in covid-times, delve into personal experiences of zoom interviews, and speak our minds on the reality of finding a job in 2021.Recommendations:Milk roundKickstartThe Financial TimesAmana’s interview with Iain Watson, director of the Tyne and Wear archives on https://duartsoc.blogspot.com
In our second episode, we discuss Free School Meals. Whose responsibility is it to make sure that children in the UK don’t go hungry? Why is there such a stigma surrounding food poverty? What has Marcus Rashford got to do with all of this? In 2019/20 1.9 million people in the UK used food banks. Food poverty is clearly a big issue, and it’s something we need to talk about.
