In this episode, I tell the story of Michael Beckwith, a 44-year-old man killed in Harwich, Essex, in July 2016. Michael was asked to meet up with 21-year-old Rebecca Ryan on July 31 to discuss their relationship, which had ended just a few days earlier. Unbeknownst to Michael, it was nothing more than a ploy to lure him down a secluded lane, where he was met by 27-year-old Scott Swift and 17-year-old Joseph Smith and beaten with metal poles. Michael miraculously survived the attack but sadly died in hospital two days later. Ryan and Swift received life sentences for murder in April 2017, with Smith receiving a 12-year sentence after being found guilty of manslaughter for his role in the attack. In this episode, I tell the story of Mary McLaughlin, a 58-year-old woman killed in Partick, Glasgow, in September 1984. Mary was last seen in the company of a stranger, a man, on September 26, 1984, after spending the evening in a pub with her friends. Six days later, her body was found in her home on Laurel Street by Martin Cullen, one of her 11 children, and his then-partner. Somebody had strangled Mary with the cord of her dressing gown. Thirty-five years would pass before Police Scotland arrested serial sex offender Graham McGill after advances in DNA technology placed him in Mary's flat at the time of her murder. Judge Lord Burns handed McGill a life sentence with a minimum term of 14 years in May 2021, almost four decades after Mary's murder. In this episode, I tell the story of Ermatati Rodgers, a 41-year-old woman killed in Gwersyllt, Wrexham, in April 2008. Tati (as she was known) arrived in the UK from her native Indonesia in 1996 with her then-husband. On January 4, 2008, she unexpectedly disappeared, with her best friend raising the alarm the next day after she failed to meet her for lunch as planned. It took 14 months, but forensic teams finally found her remains in March 2009. A post-mortem quickly established that a third party had likely caused her death. Within a week of her body being found, Polish national Lukasz Reszpondek confessed that it was he who'd buried Tati; however, he denied murdering her. Mr Justice Lloyd Jones handed Reszpondek a life sentence with a minimum term of 18 years in November 2009 after he was found guilty of Tati's murder by way of a majority verdict. In this episode, I tell the story of Joshua Hall, a 17-year-old boy killed in Cam, Gloucestershire, in April 2021. Joshua had agreed to meet fellow teenager, 15-year-old Harley Demmon, at Cam Sports Club to "sort out their differences". Expecting nothing more than some harsh words to be exchanged, perhaps with the worst-case scenario being a fistfight, Joshua was stabbed and killed by Demmon within two minutes of his arrival. Demmon was found guilty of Joshua's murder at Gloucester Crown Court in November 2021. Mr Justice Chamberlain handed him a life sentence in February 2022 with a minimum term of 14 years. In this episode, I tell the story of Susan Shivers, a 27-year-old woman killed in Glasgow, Scotland, in March 2007. Susan was stabbed three times in the chest in the late evening of March 3 by a man who'd approached her asking to pay for sex in Glasgow's red light district. Left for dead, Susan managed to make her way to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where she remained for a few days before being discharged. Twenty days later, she fell ill and died as a result of a blood clot while on her way back to the hospital. Stephen Muirhead was subsequently found guilty of culpable homicide and was ordered to be detained in a high-security psychiatric hospital, where he remains to this day. In this episode, I tell the story of Juliet Callaghan, a 12-year-old girl killed in Swinton, Greater Manchester, in March 1966. Juliet was attacked and killed by a 16-year-old boy called Gordon Wheeler while walking home from school one Friday afternoon. It took just ten days for the police to catch the teenage killer who had stabbed Juliet over 50 times during the frenzied attack. Wheeler was found guilty of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility in July 1966. Mr Justice Cusack ordered him to be detained at Broadmoor Hospital indefinitely. In this episode, I tell the story of Claire Morris, a 32-year-old woman killed near Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire, in May 1994. Claire was killed by her husband, Malcolm Webster, just eight months after they tied the knot. She was unknowingly drugged throughout their marriage, and, at first, it was thought that Claire's death was a tragic car accident. Webster wasn't brought to justice until 2011 when he was handed a life sentence with a 30-year minimum, but killing Claire wasn't the only thing he was guilty of. This extremely convoluted story also includes Webster's attempted murder of his second wife, Felicity Drumm, in New Zealand, his fraudulent acquisition of insurance money in the aftermath of Claire's death and another fraudulent scheme involving a third woman, Simone Banarjee. In this episode, I tell the story of Paul Norfolk, a 77-year-old man killed in Haverhill, Suffolk, in December 2011. Paul lived in his semi-detached home with his wife, Esme, and her carer, 49-year-old Thailand native Bunthawee Rimmer, until Esme was moved to a residential home when her health drastically deteriorated after suffering a stroke. Rimmer claimed she then began a sexual relationship with Paul, which ultimately led to him signing over his house and entire estate, worth around £340,000, to her in late 2011. In the early hours of December 30, Rimmer murdered Paul by striking him in the head twelve times with a claw hammer. She then attempted to end her own life but was arrested and taken to a hospital in Cambridge to be treated for her injuries. A jury at Ipswich Crown Court found her guilty of murder by way of a majority verdict in July 2012, and she was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 11 years. In this episode, I tell the story of Rachael Lean, an 18-year-old killed near Buxton, Norfolk, in September 1995. Rachael's sudden disappearance on September 5, after missing a dinner appointment with her mum, prompted a five-day search. Last seen that afternoon chatting with Maria Hnatiuk outside the Naafi shop at RAF Coltishall, where her father worked, Rachael's body was eventually discovered on September 10, not far from the RAF station. Following Hnatiuk's arrest and questioning, she confessed to the crime, attributing it to diminished responsibility and placing the blame on her controlling boyfriend, Ian Wells. On November 28, 1996, Hnatiuk received a life sentence after being unanimously found guilty of murder by the jury at Norwich Crown Court. In this episode, I tell the story of Georgia Williams, a 17-year-old girl killed in Wellington, Shropshire, on May 26, 2013. Georgia left her parents' home that Sunday evening shortly before 8 pm to take part in what she thought was a photoshoot with 22-year-old Jamie Reynolds, someone she knew through her older sister, Scarlett. After failing to return home, Georgia's parents, Steve and Lynnette, raised the alarm two days later after realising she was not with her friends, which led to a nationwide hunt for their youngest daughter. Her body was discovered on May 31, some 50 miles away from her home in woodland near the Nant-y-Garth pass in Denbighshire, North East Wales. Reynolds, who was known to the police and mental health agencies, had lured Georgia to his parents' home and killed her during a faux photo shoot. He was later assessed by a psychiatrist who said he would potentially have gone on to become a serial killer had he not been caught. He pleaded guilty to murdering Georgia on the first day of his trial at Stafford Crown Court, with Judge Mr Justice Wilkie subsequently handing him a whole life order. On May 25, 2023, Mardle Books released 'Our Georgia: The devastating murder of my daughter by a killer who should have been stopped.' The book was written by Georgia's mum, Lynnette, with journalist Robin Eveleigh and the help and support of Steve and Scarlett. In this episode, I tell the story of Catherine Kelly, a 71-year-old woman killed in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, on February 11, 2017. Catherine had spent that Saturday evening attending a 21st birthday party with her 41-year-old son William Kelly and his partner Eleanor Banks. Within minutes of the three arriving back home, a fire broke out, which resulted in Catherine's death. It was soon revealed that Kelly had deliberately set the fire with the intention of killing his mum after first beating her up. A jury at Glasgow High Court found Kelly guilty of murder in November 2017. Judge Lady Stacey handed him a life sentence with a minimum term of 23 years. In this episode, I tell the story of Louise Sellars, a 15-year-old girl killed in Appley Bridge, Greater Manchester, on August 13, 1995. That Sunday evening, Louise left her home to meet her friend Kelly Morrisey and spent a few hours with her before the two parted ways. The last time Louise was seen was at around 9:30 pm. Her parents called the police after Louise failed to return home without letting them know where she was. A massive search was conducted in the hopes of finding her alive, but sadly, her body was found the following morning by a dog walker. It would take five years before Louise's killer was brought to justice, thanks to advances in DNA technology. Ultimately, it was a discarded cigarette butt that led to the arrest and subsequent conviction of Darren Ashurst, who was 21 years old when he killed Louise. A jury at Manchester Crown Court found Ashurst guilty of murder on November 1, 2000, with Mrs Justice Rafferty handing him a life sentence. He served 20 years in total and was released from prison in 2020.
