Stop Ecocide

We talk to Jojo Mehta, Executive Director of Stop Ecocide International. 'This is big, it's really big'......  "The rules of our world are laws, and they can be changed. Laws can restrict or they can enable. What matters is what they serve. Many of the laws in our world serve property - they are based on ownership. But imagine a law that has a higher moral authority… a law that puts people and the planet first. Imagine a law that starts from first do no harm, that stops this dangerous game and takes us to a place of safety…." Polly Higgins, 2015 "We need to change the rules." Greta Thunberg, 2019  Stop Ecocide International (SEI) was co-founded in 2017 by pioneering barrister Polly Higgins (1968-2019) and current Executive Director Jojo Mehta. SEI is the driving force behind, and central communications hub for, the growing global movement to make ecocide an international crime. Their core work is activating and developing global cross-sector support for this. Positioned at the meeting point of legal developments, political traction, and public narrative, they are uniquely placed to support and amplify the global conversation. Their core international team is located in many parts of the world and managed from the UK by Stop Ecocide International Ltd. Polly Higgins (1968-2019) Jojo Mehta Their charitable entity the Stop Ecocide Foundation was created in November 2019 in the Netherlands to be the fundraising vehicle for the campaign and was the commissioning body for the Independent Expert Panel for the Legal Definition of Ecocide.   Act now to help this become law at http://www.stopecocide.earth.  We are self-funded and doing this out of love and passion for the environment and our planet.  If you would like to support us and love listening to our podcast, please follow the link to become a Patreon.  How to be good Social: www.howtobegood.com.au Instagram Facebook LinkedIn Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/howtobegood  Support the show

We were lucky enough to have a lot of Louie’s time and we decided to split the interview in two parts. If this is the first time on our page, please go to episode 24 and listen to the first part and the incredible work that Louie and OPS are doing.A little info about Louie and the Oceanic Preservation Society:Louie Psihoyos is an Academy Award-winning filmmaker and Executive Director of the Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS). He is recognized as one of the top still photographers in the world, having created iconic images for National Geographic for 18 years, and hundreds of covers for other magazines. Believing that film can be the most powerful weapon in the world, Louie founded OPS with Silicon Valley entrepreneur Jim Clark in 2005.An ardent diver and dive photographer, Psihoyos’ mission is to show the world the decline of the oceans–our planet’s most crucial resource. Circling the globe dozens of times on photographic missions, he collects the imagery and stories underlying the compelling issues that challenge and threaten the natural world while connecting with environmentalists who are working to save the planet.Psihoyos’ first documentary film, The Cove, won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Film of 2009 and over 75 other awards around the world. An annual dolphin hunt in a secret cove in Taiji, Japan suggests a microcosm of a larger picture: man’s disregard for the planet. The film premiered on Discovery in 220 countries and territories on the same day, was nominated for an Emmy (Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking) and an Academy-Award (Best Song), and sparked the #StartWith1Thing movement. With partner Obscura Digital, Psihoyos was the creative mind behind the unprecedented large-scale video projections of endangered species onto the United Nations Headquarters, Empire State Building, and the Vatican.Psihoyos most recently finished directing The Game Changers, executive produced by James Cameron. The film tells the story of James Wilks — an elite special forces trainer and winner of The Ultimate Fighter — as he travels the world on a quest for the truth behind the world’s most dangerous myth: that meat is necessary for protein, strength and optimal health. What James discovers permanently changes his relationship with food and his definition of true strength.Through the production of compelling film and imagery underlined by moving narratives, contemporary crises, and heroic film subjects, Louie Psihoyos is radically changing how people perceive documentaries. In this episode, we speak to Birguy Lamizana about the Great Green Wall project. The Great Green Wall is one of the most inspirational and urgent movements of our times. This African-led initiative aims to grow an 8000km new world wonder across the entire width of the Continent to transform the lives of millions living on the frontline of climate change. The UN Convention to Combat Desertification is a key partner in the initiative.A decade in and roughly 15% underway, the initiative is already bringing life back to Africa’s degraded landscapes at an unprecedented scale, providing food security, jobs and a reason to stay for the millions who live along its path.  The Wall promises to be a compelling solution to the many urgent threats not only facing the African Continent but the global community as a whole – notably climate change, drought, famine, conflict and migration. Once complete, the Great Green Wall will be the largest living structure on the planet, 3 times the size of the Great Barrier Reef.Improving Millions of Lives The Great Green Wall is taking root in Africa's Sahel region, at the southern edge of the Sahara desert - one of the poorest places on the planet.More than anywhere else on Earth, the Sahel is on the frontline of climate change and millions of locals are already facing its devastating impact. Persistent droughts, lack of food, conflicts over dwindling natural resources, and mass migration to Europe are just some of the many consequences.Yet, communities from Senegal in the West to Djibouti in the East are fighting back. Since the birth of the initiative in 2007, life has started coming back to the land, bringing improved food security, jobs and stability to people’s lives.Link and Info:The Great Green WallUNCCD - United Nations Convention to Combat DesertificationThe Great Green Wall FilmYears of Living Dangerously- Series episode - 'Out of Africa'How to be good Socialwww.howtobegood.com.auInstagramFacebookLinkedInIf you like what we do and want to help us continue, please help us out by donating via Patreon; with two of the membership levels, we will also plant 3 or 5 trees monthly in your name.Email or contact us on:gareth@howtobegood.com.auGareth - LinkedIn - Instagramanca@howtobegood.com.auAnca - LinkedIn - InstagramPLEASE FOLLOW/SUBSCRIBE AND GIVE US A REVIEW - ALSO TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT THE SHOW; THE MORE WE SPREAD THE WORD, THE BETTER FOR US ALL.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/howtobegood)Support the show

In this episode, we talk to Andy Straisfeld, Chief Strategist for LifeCycle Revive. Located in Brantford, Ontario, LifeCycle Revive is Canada's first polypropylene Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) waste recycler, diverting tons of medical waste from landfills. A fantastic start-up idea that has received Canadian Government funding to scale. Some facts about medical waste:About 85% of medical waste is non-hazardous.About 3% of all drug costs come from drug wastage. In the US alone, this translates to over $1 billion a year.In the US, almost 5000 acute hospitals are generating about 7000 tons of waste every day. About $10 billion is spent each year to dispose of it all.Andy and his team have developed a way to recycle a vast amount of this waste and divert it from landfill. Throughout her career, she was involved in setting up a housing cooperative in the mid-1980s; her first degree was in Chinese and Communications studies, then became a teacher and worked at the Centre for Aboriginal studies for most of the 1990’s in the Aboriginal Community Management and Development program. She worked in public health also and the Mental health Commission. She lived in China between 2014 and 2017, helping to start up a charity devoted to improving educational opportunities for children in rural villages using music and English language teaching. For 18 months, she lived in the province of Ningxia, which had recently re-located half a million people who were recognised as displaced off their farmlands due to climate change. That area has heated 2.6 degrees C above the pre-industrial average already. This is when the reality of climate change hit her.Moving back to Perth, WA, she joined Extinction Rebellion to continue her fight against climate change. To find out more about Extinction Rebellion, follow the link to the main page.
