On Slice 55 I chat with Sandra (Kilkenny), Elizabeth (Lisdoonvarna) and Stephen (Detroit) to find out all about Cu Chulainn Raleigh GAA in North Carolina! We chat all about the input of Brendan from Tullamore in the early days of the club and using the old Tullamore jerseys, Christina being the only lady on the co-ed team, Ryan F as referee and goalkeeper, the Charleston GAA Pub League, surrounding clubs like Citadel, Greenville, Knoxville and Twin Cities, the famous “Recovery Room”, the clubs 10thanniversary, Christina’s surprising love of the Rubberbandits and chatting to a “bad-ass hurler from the 1960s” in Limerick! On Slice 53 I meet the gang from Portugal GAA! I chat with Luana (Brazil), Hugo (Portugal), John (Cork) AND THE MYSTERY GUEST – an All-Ireland winning member of the Cork panel from 2010, who is revealed near the end of the chats! We talk all about Hugo living next to Markievicz Park in Sligo for time, the Portugal-Ireland historical links, Jon’s time at Bishopstown GAA and beginning Newcastle-Sunderland Uni GAA, playing versus Galway in Salthill, training in Belém, and the amazing run their jersey had on the podcast GAA Jersey World Cup in October last! Also, a beautiful story about Hugo’s son’s dream and the mystery star reveals himself and tells us about being part of the All-Ireland panel 2010!
On Slice 52 I chat to James (Monaghan), Aoife (Offaly) and Levi (Dublin) to find out the craic in Sharjah Gaels in the Middle East! We chat about the mad crowd celebrations in Bahrain, the rivalry with Abu Dhabi Na Fianna, the Sharjah Wanderers Rugby Club, Levi dropping the hurl and kicking the sliotar, the club’s 10thanniversary in 2022, standing for Amhrán na bhFiann before finals, the Sharjah Gaels club song, local Mullingar ladies Niamh and Ciara at the club and the new quick fire question about GAA tattoos and the incredible answer from Levi!!! On Slice 51 it’s the turn of Orang Éire GAA in Malaysia! I chat to Na Fianna man, Cian, Belmullet’s finest Pat, and Toronto native, Jenn (married to Pat!) to find out about life in KL. We chat the club name, working with Guinness, rivalries with Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Johor Boru and others, teachers flying to Tokyo from school for a weekend, the 10th anniversary in Clifden GAA, “12 Pubs” recruitment, Pat’s “incentive” for training the ladies, the Parish Cup, Youth v Legends debates, playing Sligo Rovers FC, ultimate frisbee, playing on the street at 1am and two amazing stories involving the unknown Nigeria GAA and tourism in Ballymore, Co. Westmeath!! A not-to-be-missed episode here!!!
On Slice 50 it’s the turn of the gang at Singapore Lions GAA! I chat with Derek (Dublin), Paul (England) and Kim (Brisbane) to find out about the club has appeared most often as the “toughest team” in Asia GAA!! I find out all about going from being the “Mayo of Asia” to winning tournaments, the influx of physios and doctors to the region including one Cormac Ó’Mhuircheartaigh, the jersey link to an RTÉ show, stars in the club’s time including Gary Hannify (and his wife!), the iconic Kim’s super work with her Amazing Race, vodka jellies and her Party Bus featuring guests such as Paul Mannion and Jack McCaffrey, the famous Sing-babwe GAA team featuring Paul and Derek, the VET Team, Michéal Ó’Mhuircheartaigh on commentary in Singapore, and not only do they know Mrs Doyle from Father Ted, they have a member who was an extra on the show!
On Slice 49 the journey in Asia continues as I chat to Asian County Board and Seoul GAA man, Joe Trolan, to find out the craic in Asia and South Korea. We chat all about soccer scholarships from Coleraine FC to the USA, time with Atlanta GAA, discos in Slaughtneil in Derry in the 90s, sleeping outside the pub in Philadelphia, rivalries with Busan GAA and Daegu GAA, his AGM hiccups, army base training, Jack McCaffrey and Paul Mannion in Seoul, hurling with Derry, Asian Games wins, the club karaoke song and who did Joe pick between Korean soccer star Heung Min Son and Dungiven GAA man Joe Brolly? That and much more in a wonderful chat with the gentleman himself!
On Slice 48 I chat to Niamh (Sligo) and Chris (Derry) to find out all about Japan GAA in their 25th Anniversary! We chat about experience with Hong Kong GAA, playing Singapore GAA and the AGG tournaments, the Japanese All You Can Drink, locals taking on the skills of the GAA world, Japan GAA in Croke Park in 2017, a Fair Play award for a fair player, the beautiful Japanese GAA jersey, and of course some other things like Mick Konstantin’s Japan GAA song, earthquakes, and how did the girls fair when going to climb Mt Fuji? I meet Jamie (Kerry), Enoch (Dallas), Aoibheann (Offaly) and Shane (Donegal) to find out all the craic in the UAE once again! We chat rivalries with Fujairah, RAK, Dubai Celts, Jumeirah and others, the newly formed Laochra GAA team in Dubai, no Corkmen joining the team, Virgin Media using the Kerry ME logo in the All-Ireland semi-final, the Kerry Society in Dubai, the cool crest, Enoch transferring his American Football skills to GAA, a Mullingar woman as secretary, using the Sunday Game theme song and Shane introducing Father Ted to a man from which unexpected country? On Slice 46 it is a special one as I chat to Jakob and Charlotte (“Lotti”), both of whom are members of the first ever All-German GAA club, Darmstadt GAA! I find out about Jakob living in Carlow and learning the game from a 10 year old, games against other German teams, Lotti playing in her first camogie tournament, how the famous Germans loving their rules went against them in hurling, training in the university, the club playlist, a member named Ted, the might of neighbouring Belgium GAA and much more!
On Slice 45 I chat to Kerry (Ottawa/Antrim) and Dermot (Galway) about Ottawa Gaels GAA and the Canadian GAA as a whole. I find out all about the clubs origins, Kerry’s Cushendall and Antrim days, the East Canada GAA scene with Montreal, Quebec, Toronto, Prince Edward Island and others, the visit of Joe McDonagh to Ottawa, playing the great St Mike’s teams, the World Games 2023, Aussie John in Quebec and an incredible story about club stalwart Breda who played and won a final all while going through cancer treatment – an inspirational tale! And of course, Kerry and Dermot take on the quickfire questions with some VERY Canadian v Ireland dilemmas!
On Slice 44 I chat to two Dubs! Firstly, Kilmacud Crokes, Dublin Ladies and All-Ireland winner, Éabha Rutledge and Raheny GAA man, CJ O’Higgins. We chat all about Éabha’s time playing in Chicago with Na Aisling Gaels, bitter rivalries with Brigids in the Windy City, the toughest players at both their clubs, the What-Might-Have-Been squad underage at Raheny with CJ, the growth of Meath and Westmeath LGFA and the impact of Hannah Tyrell and others in Dublin LGFA. Then we chat about their latest product – Great Grip Gloves. A dry-weather GAA glove that is growing in popularity among the clubs and counties at all levels. And what about future products and potential markets for the gloves? Find out all this and more!
On Slice 43 I chat to Martin (Laois) and Megan (Limerick) to find out all about Madrid Harps GAA – and it is some craic!! On Slice 42 I have the pleasure of chatting to local Atlanta man Mark, Westmeath man Cormac and Cavan man and Chairman, Ray, as we find out all about Atlanta GAA in Georgia, USA. We find out all about being fans of Atlanta United, playing days with Bunbrosna and Lavey back home before playing in Stateside, the 96 Olympics and Michelle Smith, Ray playing in the ’86 NY Final with Larry Tompkins and Bernard Flynn being sent off, trips to Orlando, Charlotte and beyond, the competitive Southeast US Division, winning at the World Games in Waterford 2019, hurling on the i75 in traffic with a crowd watching and the tough choice between Kenan and Kel or Daithí and Maura!
On Slice 41 it’s something pretty cool – it’s NYPD GAA man Mike live from the patrol car on the streets on New York!! We chat all about the clubs beginnings in the 70’s, the rivalry with the Fire Dept, pubs in the area, playing as the warm up to the Connacht Championship, entering the league for the first time, Twitter banter with Manhattan Gaels, America’s “greatest player” Shane Hogan, NYGAA stories of All Ireland battles and Marty commentating, the lost NYPD members from 9/11, broken bones in a charity game, the GAA President link to NYC, playing the Gardaí, PSNI and London Met and how realistic is Brooklyn 99 in terms of the NYPD life!? You can probably guess that one…
A special short one for you today as I take a look back at yesterday’s epic encounter in the Leinster JFC and a little look at the GGE board and what it means to so many around Europe. So have a listen into the story of the GGE board and what happened in Parnell Park yesterday between Dublin JFC St Mark’s and Gaelic Games Europe Champions, Amsterdam GAC, in the AIB Leinster JFC!
It’s a special Slice this Saturday as I meet with two amazing sisters – Moira Dunne, founder of beproductive.ie and RTÉ newsreader Eileen – as we chat about the what is sure to be one of the great GAA treasures, their book All Star Gazing: 50 Years of the All Stars. We chat about the legacy of their father, Mick, a GAA correspondent and co-founder of the awards ceremony, the incredible array of historical GAA records he kept, All-Star experiences and tasty desserts, links to Westmeath, special chats with the Bonners, Eddie Keher and others, the All-Star Toronto “ring” and whether we will see Bryan Dobson and co promoting the book on the Six O’Clock news! On Slice 40 I chat to Eamonn and find out all about Seattle Gaels GAA as we celebrate the famous Thanksgiving Day this Thursday November 25th. We chat all about the Emerald City, his introduction into the club and ending up as manager, being the largest club in the NW of the USA, hosting the US Nationals, the Seattle-Dublin Aer Lingus flight starting through the club, trying to get Russel Wilson to training, rivalries with a club in another country (Vancouver in Canada!!) and much more including being in the home of the great music icons, Nirvana. And a super link between the Loaf of Bread GAA pod and Éamonn’s intro to Paidí… and Pintman Paddy Losty!!
On Slice 39 I have the pleasure of chatting to author, Seán O’Sullivan, about his new and unique GAA book, The Players Advice. This is sure to be a top seller in the coming months! Seán tells us about the inspiration for the book coming from the back of a physics class, having an insane number of GAA names involved, forewords by Mick Bohan and Marty, being one of the youngest authors with O’Brien Press, Self Help Africa and Alan Kerins, his own club Na Fianna in Dublin, his dad being his coach, and of course Seán takes on the quick fire round where he picks a Famous Five of GAA greats!
On Slice 38, it is something different. I chat with Sanya in Dubai, an author who has lived a large portion of her life in Ireland – from Monaghan to Mullingar and all in between. She tells us about her books based on a set of children’s characters called the Wadi Tribe. We look at how her character, Tach, a number 14 full forward turtle finds his way to Croke Park to play hurling. All done through the means of story which helps children with their emotional development and management. It’s a wonderful project and something I am delighted to bring to you.
