This week's episode was actually recorded a few weeks back with the wonderful Javier Vilalta!Javi was so great giving me some insight into his directing of the recently sold out show, “The House of Bernarda Alba,” that wrapped up October.1st at Sage Theatre. It was Javi’s second time directing this play, but this time with an all 2SLGBTQIA cast. We talked about the relevance of the play (originally written in 1936) to today's current climate and how it is still a lightning rod for communities that feel oppressed and stigmatised. We also get to hear about Javi’s experience being born and raised in Mexico City to now living in Calgary. And when Javi isn’t directing or working on creative projects, he also loves to travel, to not only see the world, but to have a deeper understanding of the different cultures and communities around us.IG: @javivilalta@8rojo_Twitter: @javivilalta@8rojowww.8rojo.comBio:Javier is a Mexican-Canadian visual performance creator, stage director, movement coach, and translator. It was such a treat and honour to chat with this week’s guest, award winning playwright, Clem Martini!Clem tells us all about his deeply personal play, ‘Cantata, a dramatization and fictionalization of Martini’s experience as a caregiver for a brother with schizophrenia and a mother developing dementia, which is currently playing at Sage Theatre in Calgary. Clem also talks about his intentionally diverse works in the writing world and how he advises his students to write what's on their plate.Bio:AWARD-WINNING CALGARIAN PLAY DEBUTS AT SAGE THEATREMarimba and Martinis. Who could ask for more? The world premiere of Clem Martini’s new play Cantata (Rumours Of My Crazy, Useless Life) hits the stage with Sage Theatre on April 28th, and runs until May 7th at cSpace King Edward. Artistic Director Jason Mehmel helms this local, powerhouse team (Duval Lang, Brian Jensen, Valerie Campbell, and Precious Akpoguma) to share this thoughtful and moving story that won the 2021 Theatre BC National Playwrighting Competition.Cantata (Rumours Of My Crazy, Useless Life) is a dramatization and fictionalization of Martini’s experience as a caregiver for a brother with  schizophrenia and a mother developing dementia. The family undergoes much stress as the delicate balance of caregiving unravels. “While this is by no means a COVID-focussed play,” says Mehmel “the ideals of caregiving and family have been in the forefront of people’s minds for the last two years. I think we have all been reflecting on how difficult it can be to look after our loved ones when something big changes.” Family has played a large part in the formation and creation of Cantata. Not only is the show semi- autobiographical and based on Martini’s life, but it’s actually an adaptation of the book that the two brothers wrote, The Unravelling: How our caregiving safety net came unstrung and we were left grasping at threads, struggling to plait a new one. The book is a memoir, told through illustrations and text, exploring similar themes that the show touts. The Unravelling won the Alberta Trade Fiction Book of the Year Award in 2018 and was shortlisted for the W.O. Mitchell Book Prize in the same year. “Obviously, Cantata shares deep ties with Clem and his family,” says Mehmel “but the fictionalization is especially important. It allows us to both acknowledge the real lives behind the story, and to make creative choices that make for an engaging production.”Clem Martini is no stranger to the Calgarian theatre scene and is a pillar of the Canadian artistic community. Audiences have seen many of his works over the past few years, including Afterlife (Lunchbox Theatre), The Secret Life of the Octopus (Quest Theatre), Illegal Entry (Alberta Theatre Projects), and Selling Mr. Rushdie (Workshop West). He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2020, he was awarded the ATB Financial Healing Through the Arts Award in 2016, and he’s a three-time recipient of the Gwen Pharis Ringwood Award for Playwrighting. He is currently the Chair of the Division of Drama in the School of Creative and Performing Arts at the University of Calgary.Joining Martini and Mehmel in Sage Theatre’s production is fellow U of C Professor and professional musician Rod Squance. Squance composed music for the piece, helped to musically develop the show in its workshop stages, and will be performing live marimba with the actors on stage. For more information on Cantata, you can go to https://sagetheatre.com/cantata/ - to buy tickets, you can head to https://app.arts-people.com/index.php?show=133228 (Tickets range from $5-$60 in a Pay- What-You-Will model). This week we talk with up and coming, singer/songwriter, Noelle and discuss her much anticipated debut EP, 30K!Coming from a very musical family and community on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, Noelle tells us how that has shaped her as an artist and nurtured her love of music. We also chat about her decade of singing beautiful covers that have led to her huge following on youtube and how she wants to show her authentic self through social media and to the world. We even talk a little pop culture and our mutual love for watching “Euphoria.” Instagram:@noelleofficialTwitter:@noelleofficialTik Tok:@noelleofficialYouTube:https://youtube.com/c/NoelleOfficialSpotify:https://open.spotify.com/artist/0UBB7UD8Lvt7UesGnXDRpy?si=dTcoy7hAR8i6LHch_24p4wBio:Canadian artist, noelle, is a 20-year-old emerging pop talent with a modern R&B edge.  noelle has been singing since she was barely old enough to walk. Initially finding her footing through YouTube, noelle amassed a following of 94.2K subscribers resulting from her viral covers of timeless classics and today’s biggest acts, most notably Post Malone and Sabrina Claudio.  noelle was raised on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory in Ontario, in a family and community that surrounded her with music. Her upbringing exposed her to a vast range of musical genres, from Nat King Cole and Sarah Vaughan, to the pow wow drum and native wind flute from her Indigenous roots. Just like many others, noelle’s high school years were full of highs and lows, and music quickly became her outlet. Expressing her thoughts and emotions at her piano, coupled with a reality she sought to transcend, noelle began writing her own music as a therapeutic form of self-expression. The artists’ whose words she once personalized through her covers, soon became the major influences behind her own music. After graduating high school in 2017, noelle signed her record deal with Wax Records, and has spent two years developing her sound to create a modern blend of R&B, pop, urban, and jazz influences.  noelle’s pop ballad repertoire harnesses the powerful contrast of the darkness she sees in the modern world. Coupling thought-provoking lyrics with melodies that will both emotionally and physically move her audience, her words remind you how it feels to experience the world and love as a young woman today.
On this episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with Charlotte and Sarah Command of The Command Sisters! The ladies talk about how social media has helped them reach music lovers and fans, while also honing their business skills in promoting their art and themselves. We break down the process of songwriting for the sisters, who each bring their own special skill to their songs. We also explore what keeps them motivated to push through and create through pandemic and the ups and downs of waiting for concerts and live performances to bounce back. I loved chatting with these ladies!Instagram:@commandsistersTwitter:@commandsistersTik Tok:@commandsistersWebsite:www.commandsisters.comBio:If they stepped out of a frame from a Quentin Tarantino flick, no one would question it...and yes, “Command" is their real name. Highlighting high fashion heat and even hotter hooks, Command Sisters exert this effect on tape, on stage, and everywhere else for that matter. The sisterly duo—Charlotte and Sarah Command—turn life’s ups and downs into eloquent and entrancing alternative underpinned by live instrumentation and bold production. From music to fashion, the Toronto band make a statement with everything they do. “We are a yin and yang, my sister and I. Both literally and figuratively; Charlotte’s hair is usually black, and mine is blonde or white. Our look reflects our synergy; the songs that Charlotte writes partnered with the instrumentation I bring. This is our identity.” Embedding themselves in the Toronto scene during 2016, they honed a combination of killer songcraft, social media savvy, and IDGAF fashion, attracting a growing following on both sides of the border. Along the way, they inked a deal with 21 Entertainment and Universal Music Canada. The two immediately hit the studio and focused on crafting a scorching signature sonic style influenced by everyone from The 1975 to Alanis Morissette, Hall & Oates to Lenny Kravitz. The sisters introduce this style on their debut single “I Can Do What I Want To,” recorded in LA with Tim Pagnotta (Walk The Moon, Weezer, Blink 182, Neon Trees). The title says it all – this song is about empowerment, standing up for yourself and pure freedom. The lyrics seem to echo the sentiment we’re all feeling during this pandemic. “I am breaking free, you can’t control me.” Pair the hard-hitting rhythms with screaming guitar lead and you’ve got a pre-quarantine song primed for the quarantined listener. With their debut release and upcoming touring, Command Sisters’ are on track to complete their mission and move listeners in the process. “We’re two sisters who love making music,” Charlotte leaves off. “I want listeners to see that. We pour our hearts and souls into this. Hopefully, it makes you feel something.”https://open.spotify.com/track/0WZl91fF4gnNSXLrWHUg4Q?si=NzZuynxZTGO7v4gIgQRiGA

This week I got to chat with Canada’s only female national sports reporter and City News Toronto’s music and sport reporter, the hilarious and impressive, Lindsay Dunn! Lindsay is full of fun banter and poignant thoughts on everything from pop culture to the NHL’s recent controversies and the upward trend of athletes prioritizing their mental health above the game.Lindsay also makes some great points about how the journalism industry still has some strides to make with inclusion and diversity and how the ‘art of the interview’ has become a bit more about click bait, rather than recognizing the human that's being interviewed. And of course, Lindsay’s motto is to just be kind, which we at YYC Popcast, wholeheartedly agree with and love. Lindsay Dunn joined CityNews Toronto in 2017 as a Music and Sports Reporter and Producer. Prior to joining CityNews Dunn was an anchor and video journalist with Global News. Dunn has reported on the Canadian music scene for over a decade and has interviewed some of the top musicians in the world including The Rolling Stones and Drake. Lindsay began her journalism career working at CTV Regina in 2010 as a general news reporter and evening anchor before helping launch the stations morning show as their sports and music reporter in 2011. She then moved to Toronto and worked at CTV News Channel and TSN Radio. In her career she also worked as an NBA reporter covering the Raptors playoff run that took them to the Eastern Conference Finals and Kobe Bryant’s final game in Los Angeles. Dunn went to the University of Regina for History and Journalism as well as SAIT for Radio and Broadcast Journalism. Dunn was born and raised in Regina. Welcome back to The YYC Popcast, season 2!It's been a long 4 months and I couldn't be more excited to start off season 2 with none other than the incredible, Platinum-selling, Canadian singer and songwriter, Jocelyn Alice! Jocelyn talks about the 6 year journey to release her highly anticipated single “How Do You Not Know,” made famous by her time on NBC’s “Songland.” We also delve into the dark side of social media and how it's ok for artists, and anyone,  to take time off to take care of yourself, heal and deal with trauma, before moving forward with something or creating art. It's a fun, heartfelt, heart wrenching and very honest convo, with one of Calgary finest!Platinum-certified pop songstress Jocelyn Alice has sparked a musical resurgence with her latest single ‘How Could You Not Know’ released via So This Is Music and 745 Music Inc. Alice originally debuted the track as one of the finalists of NBC’s hit show Songland, where it was pitched as a potential cut for guest artist and 10x GRAMMY nominee H.E.R. Alice partnered with acclaimed songwriter and producer Shane McAnally, whose numerous credits include cuts with Kelsea Ballerini, Reba McEntire, Kacey Musgraves and more, and while another track on the show won out in the end, McAnally decided to stay on board and produce ‘How Could You Not Know’. The culminating song is a groovy and soulful blend of Alice’s diverse performance style, vocal range and songwriting abilities, as much at home on an R&B playlist as it is pure Top 40 magic, and serves as the first release from her forthcoming album due in 2022.Instagram:@iamjocelynaliceTwitter:@iamjocelynaliceTikTok:@iamjocelynalicemusicWebsite:www.jocelynalice.comhttps://open.spotify.com/track/437U5nrp0JDZgdXfqETElJ?si=wYbFu_gCRZagR6rwx4_OvA
