There was a season of my life when I lived above a morgue. Late-night garage doors rolling open below my floor. Embalming. Makeup on someone who'd never wear it again. Before that, death was something that happened to other people. Most of us keep it that way — we make the dead look alive, we keep the kids away from funerals. But death doesn't stay at arm's length forever. Eventually you're the one sitting alone next to a body you love. And when that day comes, you want more than a philosophy. You want an answer. Every religion has tried to give one. Enough good lives and maybe you dissolve into eternity. Enough good works and maybe the scale tips your way. Or — just take what you can get, because after this, nothing. Jesus gives a different answer. And he gives it outside a tomb that's already started to smell. In John 11, Lazarus has been dead four days when Jesus finally shows up. What happens next shows us three things: death is overwhelming, Jesus feels it too, and Jesus overwhelms death anyway. You get the call. Someone you love is in trouble, and you expect help to come right away. But it doesn't. Not that hour. Not that day. The silence stretches on, and you're left wondering if anyone's coming at all. That's exactly where Mary and Martha find themselves. They send word to Jesus that His close friend Lazarus is sick—dying, even—and surely He'll drop everything. Instead, He waits. Two more days. By the time He arrives, Lazarus is already in the tomb. So what do you do when God seems to delay right when you need Him most? Today we're in John 11:1–16, where we find out that the delay isn't a sign that God has stopped caring—it's the setup for something bigger than anyone in that story could have imagined. Have you ever been in an argument where the other person refuses to engage with the evidence? No matter what you say or show, they've already made up their minds. That's exactly where Jesus finds himself at the Feast of Dedication — what we know today as Hanukkah. After three chapters of debate with the religious leaders, they still won't budge. So Jesus ends the argument. But what he says isn't just for them. It's for anyone who's wondered whether their faith is secure, whether the evidence holds up, and whether there's something here worth staking your life on. John 10:22–39. Pastor Jeff Bucknam. Spend enough time around sheep and you start to understand why God compares us to them. They wander into ditches. They roll onto their backs and can't get up. They need constant rescuing — and somehow, they keep ending up in the same predicaments over and over again. It's not exactly a flattering comparison. But Jesus leans into it fully in John chapter 10 — and what he says about the shepherd changes everything. In this passage, Jesus draws a sharp contrast between the leaders who were supposed to care for God's people and actually used them, and a shepherd who is so committed to his flock that he knows every sheep by name — and is willing to lay down his life for them. That's who Jesus says he is. And if that's true, it has something to say to anyone who is scared, or ashamed, or feels like they're coming up short. We're in John 10:1-18 in our series Believe!
