Dr. Margaret Robinson (she/her) is a Mi’kmaw scholar and a member of Lennox Island First Nation. She works as an Associate Professor at Dalhousie University in Mi’kma’ki, where she holds the Tier II Canada Research Chair in Reconciliation, Gender, and Identity. Dr. Amardeep Singh Mangat was born in Tanzania and moved to California when he was 2-years-old. His parents are originally from Punjab India, but he grew up in San Francisco. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency with honours of ‘Resident of the Year’ and was selected Chief Resident at the UCSF-affiliated Alameda County Medical Center.He moved to Toronto in 2012 and has been working in the division of General Internal Medicine at North York General Hospital, which is the leading community academic hospital in all of Canada. Dr. Simran Malhotra is a triple board-certified physician in internal medicine, hospice and palliative care, and lifestyle medicine. She practices part time as an inpatient palliative care physician at Medstar Health. She completed her internal medicine residency at Medstar Franklin Square Medical Center where she also served as chief resident in 2015. In this episode of the Plant-Based Canada Podcast, we talk to chef Ikeila Wright, former owner of the long-standing vegan Caribbean restaurant One Love Vegetarian in Toronto. When Ikeila decided to leave the world of meat behind and enter the plant kingdom, her Life changed. Everything she learned about cooking and the restaurant industry went totally out the window. In the process, Ikeila not only had to learn to emphasize taste… but also manipulate texture, timing, and temperature to create food that was pleasing to the palette without the aid of meat, dairy, eggs, or refined products.  In between raising children and catering, Ikeila and her family became known as food vendors at many major Toronto outdoor festivals. They spent many summers vending at The Harbourfront Centre where their One Love Corn Soup and Seasoned Corn received rave reviews. Dr. Bhiku Jethalal is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He graduated from the University of Natal Medical School in South Africa in 1968. He completed his Internal Medicine and Allergy training in 1978 in Canada. He was appointed Chief of Staff at the Bowmanville Memorial Hospital in 1984 and subsequently on staff as Consultant in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Scarborough Grace Hospital in 1985. Years later she made the transition to a full vegan, plant-based lifestyle. Roni has been cooking in kitchens around the world since 2004. She worked at The Coup in Calgary for seven years, before opening her business -- Roni's Kitchen -- in 2014. Rohini is a nutritionist and board-certified Lifestyle Medicine professional. Prior to becoming a nutritionist, she studied theology at Oxford University. In this episode of the Plant-Based Canada podcast, we talk to Dr. Akhtar. Dr. Akhtar is a double Board-certified neurologist and preventive medicine  specialist. She is the Co-founder, President, and CEO of the Center for Contemporary Sciences – a non-profit that is catalyzing the replacement of unreliable animal testing with more effective human-specific research techniques.Dr. Akhtar is a U-S veteran. She previously served as Deputy Director of the U.S. Army Traumatic Brain Injury Program developing the Army’s brain injury prevention and treatment strategies for soldiers. As a Commander in the U-S Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, Dr. Akhtar frequently deployed to assist with national public health emergencies.For a decade, Dr. Akhtar was a Medical Officer at the Food and Drug Administration, most recently in the Office of Counterterrorism and Emerging Threats, implementing studies on vaccine effectiveness and safety and using her Top Secret Security clearance to develop national preparedness strategies for public health threats.  Dr. Akhtar is a Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics. She is the author of the two books, Our Symphony With Animals. On Health, Empathy and Our Shared Destinies and Animals and Public Health, which argues for the need for health institutions to include animals as part of the “public” in public health. In this episode of the Plant-Based Canada Podcast we chat with Dr. Jade Dittaro, a lifestyle medicine physician in the Okanagan. She is certified with the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine, has a certification in plant-based nutrition from eCornell University, and has completed Dr. Michael Klaper’s Master Class in Nutrition.Dr. Dittaro now plans to challenge the American Boards of Obesity next year, and recently completed the Obesity: Etiology, Prevention, and Treatment course through Columbia University’s Institute of Human Nutrition. She is enrolled in the Clinicians Culinary Health Education Fundamentals (CHEF) coaching from the Institute of Lifestyle Medicine, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Harvard Medical School.Originally family medicine trained and traveling rurally to practice both family and emergency medicine, Dr. Dittaro settled in Kelowna and holds positions as a Hospitalist, Site Director for both the UBC Kelowna Rural and Regional Family Practice sites, and as a Clinical Instructor with the UBC Southern Medical Program.Dr. Dittaro has not only reviewed the evidence, but experienced personally the benefits of a whole food plant-based diet, and truly sees its potential to revolutionize our idea of “healthcare”. He is a former corporate executive, human rights lawyer, and litigator whose stressful career and poor diet lead to obesity.After a heart attack at age 41, Lee radically changed his diet, eliminating his type 2 diabetes, losing more than 80 pounds. He now seeks to demystify how people can affect and maintain the same changes he made.
