In episode 40, I’m talking to Catrin, who set up Nordicymru, instructing Nordic Walking in South West Wales in January 2022.  Like many people the Covid pandemic made Catrin and her family rethink their values and particularly what they wanted from life.  Catrin has been on an amazing journey in the last two years, which has resulted in her training to become a Nordic Walking Instructor.  In our conversation, we discuss the importance of a healthy work-life balance and the benefits of taking the plunge to shake up the status quo.To Find out more about Nordic Cymru:Website: www.nordicymru.com  Email : www.nordicymru@outlook.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/Nordicymru-111355134737854Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nordicymru/If you want to follow Catrin's camper van adventures then please visit Silver Nugget Adventure on YouTube, or on Instagram or on Facebook.  Catrin mentioned Karen Ingram, who trained her to be a British Nordic Walking Instructor.  Karen was an early guest on Walking On Air, who spoke very inspirationally about how Nordic Walking can help to relieve Back Pain.  Find An Instructorhttps://britishnordicwalking.org.uk/apps/store-locatorIf you have enjoyed this podcast, I would be very grateful if you could show your support by buying me a coffee!  This enables me to continue producing these podcasts, as it will go towards covering the server and podcast platform licenses.   Not only is Nordic Walking a whole body workout, but it is also one of the safest and most sociable way to exercise.  Classes always finish up in a cafe enjoying a coffee together. In this week’s episode, I am talking to Sam Armstrong from Walx Derwent and Dales, in Derbyshire.  Sam had worked in the fitness industry for several years, when she discovered Nordic Walking.  Recognising the benefits that exercise outdoors had on physical and mental health she was inspired to set up her business and empower others in 2008.  Over the years, Sam’s love of walking has taken her all over Europe and the UK and last year, she qualified as a Mountain Leader. She has organised walking Festivals in the Peak District and is planning one with her colleague Nicola Sproson* from 6-8 May in the Lake District.  Sam is also a carer to her eldest daughter and she has kindly agreed to talk to me today, about how Nordic Walking helped her through the most difficult period of her life.*Nicola has been a guest TWICE on Walking on Air.  First time she spoke about adapting Nordic Walking for the Mountains and more recently, she informed us about Navigation for Nordic Walking.Sam's Website is: https://walx.co.uk/groups/walx-derwent-and-dales/Walx Ullswater Nordic Walking Festivalhttps://walx.co.uk/groups/walx-ullswater-festival/Find An Instructorhttps://britishnordicwalking.org.uk/apps/store-locatorIf you have enjoyed this podcast, I would be very grateful if you could show your support by buying me a coffee!  This enables me to continue producing these podcasts, as it will go towards covering the server and podcast platform licenses.   Not only is Nordic Walking a whole body workout, but it is also one of the safest and most sociable way to exercise.  Classes always finish up in a cafe enjoying a coffee together. Today I’m talking to Alison Clark from Nottingham.  After a career in nursing, Alison qualified as a Nordic Walking Instructor in August 2017, and works as a volunteer instructor with British Nordic Walking. Projects have introduced her to the needs of a range of people who might feel challenged by a fast paced walk in a group of people they perceive as fitter than them.  She realised that many people find the idea of a ‘workout’ walk  too daunting and intimidating.. Her experience of walking with people with a range of health conditions helped her identify the need for someone to offer a Nordic Walk which takes things at a slower pace. Today I’m talking to Vicky Welsh, who regular listeners will remember, as she was my very first guest on Walking On Air, when she eloquently answered the big question of What is Nordic walking. Vicky  set up Bristol Nordic Walking in 2010, which is now one of the largest Nordic Walking Clubs in the UK.  She handed it over to her team in 2020, in order to concentrate on new projects.  She organised a successful Nordic Walking festival last October, with future ones planned; she is working on a community nordic walking project in Bristol; and on top of that, she is putting the finishing touches to her  book on Nordic Walking.  Her research for the book has led her to look in more depth into the many benefits of Nordic Walking, one of which is the effect it has on the pelvic floor.  I know that this an area of interest to many people, but also one which no one really wants to talk about.  Luckily for us, Vicky has agreed to share what she has learned.  She has asked me to point out that she is not medically qualified, so she is talking as a nordic walking instructor and fitness professional.Find An Instructorhttps://britishnordicwalking.org.uk/apps/store-locatorIf you have enjoyed this podcast, I would be very grateful if you could show your support by buying me a coffee!  This enables me to continue producing these podcasts, as it will go towards covering the server and podcast platform licenses.   Not only is Nordic Walking a whole body workout, but it is also one of the safest and most sociable way to exercise.  Classes always finish up in a cafe enjoying a coffee together. In this week’s episode, I interview Marcus Easterling, a British Nordic Walking instructor with Bristol Nordic Walking.  Marcus first picked up a pair of Nordic walking poles in 2013 and was instantly hooked!  The following year he jumped at the chance to train and become an instructor with Bristol Nordic Walking, leading his first class in August 2014. Marcus loves the fact that Nordic Walking is accessible for people of all ages and abilities and great for both body and mind, as well as being a sociable activity.  It is a complete contrast to his day job as a senior dental technician at Bristol University, as it gets him moving and meeting lots of new people. Today I’m talking to Siân Harris from Valleys Nordic Walking in South Wales.  A change in Siân’s health meant that she was unable to continue running and led her to discover NW, which in turn spring boarded a complete career change, as she wanted to share the benefits of NW with others.  Siân is also a regular Nordic Walker at her local Parkrun and has even reached the dizzy heights of membership to Parkrun’s 100 club.  To register for Parkrun  in the UK, please visit the Parkrun registration page.  If you are elsewhere in the world, you can google park run.org.xxxx (substitute your country's code in place of the xxxx e.g.   .uk .us .fr etc)Find An Instructorhttps://britishnordicwalking.org.uk/apps/store-locatorIf you have enjoyed this podcast, I would be very grateful if you could show your support by buying me a coffee!  This enables me to continue producing these podcasts, as it will go towards covering the server and podcast platform licenses.   Not only is Nordic Walking a whole body workout, but it is also one of the safest and most sociable way to exercise.  Classes always finish up in a cafe enjoying a coffee together. In this episode, I speak to Sarah Walters, a British Nordic Walking instructor based in Old Town Swindon, Wiltshire. Sarah started Nordic Walking in 2010, with her friend Fiona Woodruffe when they wanted to find an outdoor exercise activity that they both enjoyed and that would exercise the body symmetrically and with less impact on the joints. As well as being a British Nordic Walking Instructor, Sarah is also a qualified yoga teacher, which makes her the perfect guest for our topic today, which is Mindfulness and Nordic Walking.  When we recorded this episode on zoom, Sarah was speaking from a campsite in Northern Spain.Find An Instructorhttps://britishnordicwalking.org.uk/apps/store-locatorIf you have enjoyed this podcast, I would be very grateful if you could show your support by buying me a coffee!  This enables me to continue producing these podcasts, as it will go towards covering the server and podcast platform licenses.   Not only is Nordic Walking a whole body workout, but it is also one of the safest and most sociable way to exercise.  Classes always finish up in a cafe enjoying a coffee together. In this episode, I talk to Phil Sheridan and Helen Parsons from Discover Nordic Walking, based in Yorkshire.  Not only are they both qualified as British Nordic Walking Instructors, but they  are also strength coaches with British Weight Lifting and GB Powerlifting. Helen has  a MSc in Occupational Therapy and a BSc degree in Sport, Health, Exercise and Nutrition, while Phil has recently retired from a range of roles teaching and facilitating various subjects at the School of Medicine, University of Leeds.  In 2002, Phil survived a near fatal road accident leaving him very badly injured and necessitating the amputation of his right leg below the knee. They are joining me today, to share their knowledge of how Nordic Walking can benefit people using prosthetics. If people wish to learn more about Nordic Walking and amputation then Phil & Helen have kindly offered to answer any questions and invited you to get in touch via their website, or on twitter and instagram using the handle @discovernordicwalking.They recommend looking at LimbPower the charity that has  done more than most in this area with specific guidance and training for people with limb loss to become instructors.  Also this online resource by Physiopedia might prove of interest for people wishing to find out more about high level physical activity for people living with lower-limbloss.Find An Instructorhttps://britishnordicwalking.org.uk/apps/store-locatorIf you have enjoyed this podcast, I would be very grateful if you could show your support by buying me a coffee!  This enables me to continue producing these podcasts, as it will go towards covering the server and podcast platform licenses.   Not only is Nordic Walking a whole body workout, but it is also one of the safest and most sociable way to exercise.  Classes always finish up in a cafe enjoying a coffee together. In episode 23,  I’m talking to Julia Mitchell from Healthy Steps in Warwickshire, where she teaches Nordic Walking, Tai Chi and a healthy approach to life.  Twenty years ago, Julia was a busy IT executive, but then a diagnosis of Ankylosing Spondylitis, a form of rheumatoid arthritis that affects the spine, forced her to reassess her priorities. In this episode Julia and I discuss Rheumatoid Arthritis a long-term autoimmune disease that causes pain, swelling and stiffness in the joints.  Typically there are periods when symptoms become worse, known as flare ups that cause damage to the joints.  These flare ups are unpredictable. Today we particularly focus on Ankylosing Spondylitis, often known as AS, and we will learn from Julia’s experiences how Nordic Walking can be of benefit.
